or just clever marketing :?
Ive been doing some E89 homework since discovering there are many decent examples now available from £12k & what i found left me bewildered , bemused ,disappointed & pleased all at the same time :?
For any 85/86ers this may be new to you also

Since when has a BMW 2.8i actually been a 2.0 4 cyl ? it's almost funny  & why are all post 2011 models only available with turbos ? Yep no more sweet 6 engines for the Z fans

Call me old or call me a purist but i'm not that fussed for turbos so the realisation that my choices (if i wanted a E89 ) would be 2.3i or 3.0i (both pre LCI so up to 2011) left me surprised but pleased that they are well in the target price range i would be happy to pay
Then there's trim level , early 89s choice was in order of wallet thickness S drive , M sport or 3.5i onto which you can add Pure Traction or Pure Fusion
sDrive being base model then ? So why call the top model 3.5isDrive :? :?

do you mean post 2011 there are no more straight 6 non turbo's?

Current trend i'm afraid... strict emissions as such..

Having driven a 28i in the F30 i would say its pretty good... be hard pressed aside from the sound to notice the power delivery difference to say the old 3.0 straight 6.

i thought s drive referred to sports drive on bmws i.e rear wheel drive and x drive was 4wd, nothing to do with spec level of the cars

Yea no engine from 2011 in a Z4 that is without a turbo :(
I'm not for a minute saying they won't drive well but i don't crave turbo engine power
& whytf would you call a 2.0turbo a 2.8i ? ? if it had 280 bhp then maybe there's a link to the numbers but its got 245
why not 2.1i or 2.4i ?

The 28 got me too at first as I thought surley the 28 engine is bigger than the 23? Well like you discovered, no!

As far as the turbos go I have no problem. I own and have owned Turbo cars in the past and have always got on with them.

I recently went in a 135im and that thing was rapid! Last I heard it had been remapped to 400 odd bhp. It must be crazy now if it's true.

Yeah that would make some sense but reading up on the spec level's on 1st gen 89s there were 3 choices / sDrive, Msport & 3.5i :? quote sDrive

The sDrive trim is the most basic and cheapest trim in the Z4 lineup.

I think the issue here is the name for the 2.0l 4 cylinders are 18 sdrive, 20 sdrive and 28 sdrive, there is no and has never been any mention of 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 as for the sdrive this is something that is added to ALL E89s no matter what the spec so you get a 18 sdrive, 18 sdrive M Sport etc. the pure fusion and pure traction that you are referring to are the interior trims ie he colour of the seats so for Pure traction this is only avalible in the Valencia orange and is alcantara with Orange accents.

I think possibly you need to so some more 'research' as you've clearly still a lot to learn. Anyone on here with a E89 will tell you that they all have sdrive after them on the badge. A bit like you now get xDrive if you pay for it on certain models or like the X5 which has xDrive written on it. You still get a M Sport version

As for the 35is well again if you do your research you'll find out exactly why BMW add more to it, charge more and make it he tip of the range model. Not only does it has more bhp, a louder exhaust system, come with a seven speed dual clutch auto box and adaptive suspension as standar there are a few other additions which is why it's the top level car.

Edit - the attached show that it refers to 35i sDrive M Sport. M Sport is a trim level whilst sDrive is applied to ALL E89s

Thanks Angie , maybe you could drop a email to Wikipedia to put them straight

taken from their pages

Trims and Equipment

The BMW E89 Z4 is available in 3 different trim levels - sDrive, M Sport and Z4 35is in price order (cheapest to least cheapest). The Pure Traction Design package and Pure Fusion Design package are not trims, as they can be fitted with any of the 3 trims listed before.

sDrive

The sDrive trim is the most basic and cheapest trim in the Z4 lineup. sDrive means rear wheel drive, and not all-wheel-drive.

:?

The last place I would be looking for information is on Wikipedia, a page that can be updated by anyone at anytime. Especially when said car is still being made and you can access both pre LCI and post LCI brochures online which gives you all the information you need to know.

You can only get the Z4 in sDrive as there has never been and will never be a xDrive version

Oh dear, BMW nomenclature madness.

There is no 2.8i or 3.5i etc

It's a 4 pot turbo 2.0 in the 18i/20i/28i

It's a 6 pot NA 2.5 in the 23i, 6 pot 3.0 in the 30i

Also 6 pot turbo 3.0 in the 35i and 35is

SDrive is simply rear wheel drive

The trim is SE or M Sport

I appreciate that , i get the engine set up now & never thought there was a Xdrive  i was looking for the usual ref when you search for a used car , with BMWs is it , Se , Sport etc
So what would be the 3 basic trim levels on the 1st gen E89s ? In BMW speak ?

Many thanks Gary , so its all sales blurb & over egging the custard ?
The usual SE (rides higher, less colour coding & basic seats)
Msport , sculptured ext body kit , lower & harder ride , sport seats

I cant understand why BMW have done this model designation....

With the odd exception they model number has always referred to engine size....

Its stupidity to have names, spec level and numbers so long and complicated...

I looked at a lovely Melbourne red 2011 28 Sdrive M sport earlier this week....... FFS its a 4 banger.........Interest now zero

Although the broucher never states SE just Z4 sDrive 18i, 20i, 28i, 23i, 30i & 35i as well as Z4 sDrive 18i M Sport, 20i M Sport, 28i M Sport, 23i M sport, 30i M Sport, 35i M Sport & Z4 sDrive 35is

It's the same for the whole BMW range now, not just the Z4 unfortunately and the 28 was in the F Series 3 series before it was in the Z4.

I had a 135i vert, then a 120i vert and swore I'd never have a 4 cylinder BM again not only did it sound kak it was less 'fuel efficent' than the 6 cylinder and my 35is is again more efficent than the 120i.

Come on mr w keep up it ain't rocket science
The firet e89's only had standard SE interior as M sport was brought out some months later.
There was a choice of dash trim, standard sh1tty silver plastic or brushed aluminium.

Ok , so this one appears to have Msport seats but isn't advertised as Msport :? What are the ext visual differences from the 2nd one which has Se seats ? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201502161004320/sort/default/price-from/12000/postcode/bb120hr/radius/1501/maximum-age/up_to_6_years_old/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/make/bmw/page/1/model/z4/usedcars?logcode=p
