Tempted!

Hi All,

Well since I am one of the undesirables, I would like to put my feedback from having one of those not true BMW 4 Pot twin turbo.

Bit of history, I had an 320D, 330D & 335I and now an Z4 28i.

Does it sound like an tug boat NO
Does it sound like an tractor NO
Does it sound like an sweet NA straight 6 NO
Does it have it make an unpleasant sound NO

335I had the most intoxicating loud button, and do I miss it the sound yes

However would I swop my 4 pot or an 3.0l No
Would I swop it for an 35i - hard decision
Would I swop it for an 35is - pass me the keys :D

There are benefits of 4 pots over 6 cylinder versions.
100KG lighter
Engine is further back in the engine bay
For an daily used car - cost per mile is sigificantly less with an 4 pot

However..
Power Delivery and acoustics an full fat 6 wins every time

Now I go into my bunker - and will not pop out my head for an while :)

Can't argue with that Twin Turbo. The smaller engined Z4's make a lot of sense on a lot of levels.

Everyone has different needs and priorities. I tried a 20i some years back when they first came out, when I was a bit fed up with the issues on the 35i. While the 20i wasn't the car for me, what I did feel is the difference in weight. The 20i car felt a bit more balanced and turned in a lot nicer. I could feel the weight when I got back into the 35i, but then I put my foot down and remembered why I bought it.

Interesting point on weight Maniac, I've only tried the 2.0 e89's, thought they we're very nicely balanced, felt lighter somehow than my M did, be interesting to see the difference with the 35 when it shows up. I don't doubt it'll be worse but hopefully not by too much and as you say the engine should make up for it.

Twin Turbo & Maniac you're spot on!
I've owned a 23i for 3 years and my current 20i for two and a half, also had a 28i and 35i overnight/weekend demos.
Whilst I agree the 35i is the dogs danglies I honestly think the 28i would be my top choice.
If I had the 35i as my daily drive I'd either kill myself or get a ban!
The 20i has been my favourite out of the two I've owned but there has been a few times when I wished it had a few more horses (not many but a few).
I don't know if I'm missing something when people harp on about the smooth delivery and sound from a straight six, my 4 pot turbo sounds just as good and gives me more power than my old 23i without revving the knackers of it, and as others have said is lighter and more nimble in the corners.

Pack it in lux will you please  I very very nearly went for a 28i as well, more than enough shove, cheaper to buy and run, it was only wanting the DCT that made me go 35is, got that lingering feeling that I've made the wrong choice walking around my head.

When buying new it's not as simple as you might think glancing at the price list to choose between the models. The way BMW structure it's deal is very interesting and basically the higher up the range you go the more money you get off. I asked my dealer for the numbers to be run on 3 cars. The 28i, 35i and 35is, all cars would be spec'd using my previous 35i specification to determine extras. The website was (still is I think) broken too, so it didn't show the deals properly (if at all) on the bigger engined cars.

The first strange thing is that the 35is was actually a few hundred £ cheaper than the 35i with the same add-extras (no adaptive suspension though). So this ruled out the 35i straight way.

The next thing was that the BMW and dealer contributions to the 28i were substantially lower than the 35is and therefore (biased because of the high specification no doubt) the 35is wasn't that much more expensive than the 28i either. The 28i would have advantages but the 35is was far too tempting for the not-too-much extra.

Always worth running the deals if you are looking in the future.

...you'll be OK John, I'm sure you won't regret a thing. like I said if i had the 35is as my daily I'd be banned or dead within a few months
I don't think there's a bad model in the range 6 or 4 pot (not driven the 18i) it's all horses for courses. It just pisses me off when some people slate anything that isn't a fire breathing V8 monster, without actually driving them.

Yep the 35is was'nt that much more when fully specced as you say Andy, and should be a bit easier to sell if ever needed. Just looking at it sensibly it's a lot more to pay for just a gearbox and adaptive suspension but what the hell, if I was being sensible I would'nt have bought a new one in the first place...

Cheers Lux, I'm sure I'll love it when it pitches up.

You will love it for sure. Do you have a link to the spec you chose ?

Need it in your Sig for people like me with short attention spans :?

Err pass Andy, not sure how you do a sig list. Anyway it's a 35is, black on 296 rims, red interior, I drive sat nav, cruise, heated steering wheel, 14 speaker pro wireless, wind deflector, load through storage, extended storage etc etc.

For the Signature... Just go into User CP and fill in the box with the details.

Bet you can't wait for it to arrive and at least you don't have wait 5 weeks to collect it like I did. It will be worth every minute of the wait.

I'm driving mine every night for no reason other than the fun of it. Getting used to the car again, loving the interior, loving the colour. It's just a beautiful car.

Hey guys ive had a quick read over the posts sorry if it has been asked but what are the mai differences between the 35i and 35is? Are they the same engines and turbos and just tuned differently how sbout inside? Im really tempted to trade up from the 3.0i.

There are other trinkets thrown in as well Roy but fundamentally the same car with higher power yes ,
I found Wikipedia the easiest place to digest the plethora of info available but others have mentioned its 5hit
here's a snippet from the page if it helps mate

Z4 35is
A Z4 35is outside the BMW Headquarters in Munich, Germany.

In addition to all the features above the sDrive 35is gets: 18” Light Alloy Star-Spoke Style 295 Rims, Adaptive M Sport suspension, Colour-Coded Rear Bumper insert with Diffuse Panel, Floor Mats with sDrive 35is Designation, Front Apron Air Inlets with Matt Aluminium Twist Motif, Seven-Speed Double Clutch Transmission, Brake Energy Regeneration, Servotronic Power Steering, Kansas Leather, Adaptive M Sport Suspension (35is), Extended Lighting, Metallic Paintwork (Black Sapphire, Deep Sea Blue, Glacier Silver, Melbourne Red with M Sport, Mineral Grey, Mineral White, Sparkling Brown with Pure Fusion Design Package, Valencia Orange in conjunction with the Pure Traction Design package), a Sports Exhaust (which adds an extra 10db) and a Sport Steering setup.

Options for the Z4 35is include Adaptive M Sport Suspension (which is only standard on the Z4 35is), Alcantara or Leather, Extended Alcantara or Leather with the Pure Traction Design package and Exclusive Nappa Leather with the Pure Fusion Design package. Auto Start/Stop technology is unavailable and an Optimum Shift Indicator are for cars with a manual transmission.

The BMW E89 Z4 35is comes exclusively with a computer-controlled overboost function. The boost function activates after every gear change with full throttle, and lasts for 7 seconds between 1500 and 4500rpm. During that time frame, the car will have reached 500Nm of torque for 1-2 seconds, an increase of 50Nm (37lb-ft) over the 450Nm (332lb-ft) without overboost. The full 500Nm comes in 3rd-7th gear only.

A Z4 sDrive 35i and 35is can be differentiated from other models by looking at the exhausts. If there are singular exhaust pipes on both sides, then the car is a Z4 sDrive 35i or 35is model.

Main differences

DCT transmission as standard
adaptive suspension as standard
Hill start assist
sport exhaust (10db louder)

40 Bhp extra and extra torque (450 nm) plus over boost which takes it up to 500 Nm

small trim differences etc (mine has matt silver mirrors etc)

that's it I think ?
