BuzyG's big Adventure Time to head home.

We walked up from our B&B to the highest point in Wellington today. So what would you expect to see up there?

A RADAR insulation.
A Bond Baddie's not so secret lair.

A wind turbine. (Well it is Windy Welly.)

And finally of course, a London bus. :o :D 8)

Is there any escaping them.

A storm has rolled in to the West Coast today. So a timely departure East to the town of Napeir. Yet another stunning setting for our adventure to continue from. :D

Well Buzgy, NZ, Japan & Yellowstone are on my bucket list, preferably within the next 10 years before they start taxing flying like they do fuel.

Would appreciate a NZ summary of
- what to avoid
- what was excellent
- what you never got to see but were told locally was great
- recommended hidden gems not on your typical tour guide

Cheers

Such an epic day with my son today. Had to pop up a few more pictures. We climbed mount Ruapehu. North New Zealand's highest peak. We were so lucky to grab a weather window. Clearly no on else had climbed it recently. We had the entire North West side of the mountain to ourselves. One other group were heading up as we struggled down in strengthening winds. They wisely turned around. :)

That looks a fair climb, how long to get up the top.
We set off from the car park at the empty ski center at 07:30am. We reached the summit at about 13:30. Stayed around 45mins at the summit. Back at the car at 19:30. So a full 12 hours. The wind really picked up while we were on the summit ,gusting to around 40 mph and with the sun degrading the ice it took us longer to get down to the ski field than it had taken to climb up. We got pounded for an hour or so by ice crystals heading down skyline ridge. Once back to safety a hundred meters or so above the ski feilds we headed out into the center of the snow away from the ridge and slid down around 400 meters on our bums. Fantastic fun that bit. Then a few hundred meters down tracks to the car.

Wow, very impressive. Don't think we'll be attempting such energetic activities when we're down there..
There are plenty of less energetic things to do, but NZ in general is a walker/climbers paradise.

not with a 2 month old though... maybe in a few years time :D
We're in Rotorua now we did the Red wood tree top walk this evening. There was a japnese couple with a baby carrier with wheels up there too. Health and safety is a little more relaxed here. :)

Mrs G took this one while we were up there. The ridge we climbed up is right in the centre of the photo with the summit ridge then leading off left to the high point. :) The ice climb up and back to the ridge was less than 200m, but that section took us 5 hours up and back.

One last pic off Edd's phone. Two happy climbers on the summit.

A day we will never forget. :D

You seem to be having a fantastic experience and no doubt living a dream you have had for a while. All credit to you and Mrs G. Pictures are superb.

Hi John, wondered how far away from the erupting volcano on a North island you were? :o
