Broken rear springs

Had my inspection I and all was well except a broken rear spring! Does anyone know if a wheel alignment is needed after the rear springs are replaced?

Shouldn't be required; the spring can be replaced without undoing any alignment related bolts.

That said a proper 4 wheel geo from a shop that knows how to perform it properly is not a bad idea every few years.

Thanks! I usually get an alignment done once a year to my own specs but had it done recently so don't want to fork out another 100bucks, hopefully the dealership don't mess around with any of the alignment bolts when they replace the springs, I'll be sure to mention it to them.

Mine had a broken spring when I bought it, a perfect excuse to upgrade to a set of Eibachs all round. :)

I thought about this but I'd like to retain the ride height as it does get a little tricky in places and the car does get driven most days. Also I have warranty and assume this type of thing is covered, but will find out next week.

It only takes about 5 minutes to replace the rear spring and 6 bolts. 5 bolts for the wheel and 1 bolt that hold's the shock. Remove the old spring by pressing to and pry out then in with the new one :)

No alignment-bolts are touched.

Thanks! I've been reading warranty may not cover so as a contingency does anyone know of oem after market springs?

I would agree with Mister T.

There is a small chance that it could increase wear as it will be using a smaller range of the shocks movement, but it's surely within the range that BMW intended. Many, many users on here use these springs and it's not often I've read of the dampers wearing out. Worst case the standard dampers are not too pricey.

Personally I would take the chance, a set of 4 Eibachs from ebay aren't that much more than the cost of a pair of rear springs from BMW, the ride is no worse in my opinion, it improves the looks and being a thicker steel the coils are less likely to break again.

Regards, Dave

The car has 67k on it so hopefully the shocks would hold up for a year or 2 with eibachs. I'll see what BMW say on Monday otherwise I may have some eibachs on it in the next couple of weeks!

Depends what warranty. I've just had both my rear springs replaced under BMW Insured Warranty (Comprehensive Zero Excess). It's BMW policy on M cars to replace both springs on an axle even if only one is broken. I wasn't going to argue.

I've got Mondial fully comprehensive so sounds like the same one. Could I ask which dealership you went too?

Spoke to the dealership today, they said £150 just to inspect and then they'd have to send pics to Mondial who may or may not approve coverage as it may be considered wear and tear (given I'm past 60k miles). If they do not approve it's another 150 labour and 100 each rear corner so I'd end up forking out 500 just for rear springs, really! Seems like a car with 60k plus is difficult to claim on with Mondial as they just put it down to wear and tear.

So will be cancelling the warranty buying some eibachs and have a side savings pot for future maintenance.

Does anyone know of a good front and rear spring installation guide?

If you're swapping the springs then think about doing the shocks too, yours may be a little tired and you'll only have to do the job once.

TIS is available online, might be a guide on here.

That's bullshit! My dealer (Stratstone) did it with minimal fuss. All they wanted to see was my service book with all the right stamps in. You need to find a new dealer. It's not the first time I've had springs under the warranty either.

Yea it's so frustrating. Which dealer did you use ( location)? Does your car have more than 60k?

I've had them at Stratstone Chesterfield and Sytner Nottingham. The 60k mile argument is dealer nonsense because they can't be arsed to liaise with Mondial.

I'm thinking of the b12 kit seems like a good balance for what I need. What are people's opinion of theach b12 blisteins?

Also when removing the front shocks do you need to compress the spring while the shock is on the car?
