Brake dust shields - remove or replace?

Hi guys. I've established that the dust shield behind the brake is the cause of my very unpleasant rattling and grinding noise coming from the wheel.

I'm just wondering what others have done about this? Remove or replace? If the latter, does anyone know of the best place to get a replacement?

Thanks :)

The same thing happened to me with my last zed, dust/heat shield is probably coroded at the botton which should be held in place by a bolt. Just need to fit a large washer and retighten the bolt with will nip it up nicely, although I suspect the disc might need to come off so that you can gain acess to the bolt though.

Correct tried to do this fix last week, the disc needs to come of for access to bolts
Seen somewhere on the forum a post about new ones for around only£12.
But the above washer fix does work for 10p
Had the same issue on an e46.

I think the drive flange/wheel hub has to come off to swap, so its not the cost but the work.
Still much easier than at the rear though.....

About 20mm across with a 5mm across hole ,this is a rough gestimate ,it may be easier with a square washer due to the shape of the shield.
If you remove just the wheel you can see the nuts and will be to see the size of washer that will work best.

Just replaced both my front brake heat shields, £20 odd each. Same issue, corrosion around the bolt holes. The wheel bearing has to come out and I'm told they can sometimes disintegrate when they do. No issues with mine though, the bearings came out with no issues and went straight back in.

I cable tied one of mine as a temporary fix for a few months before they were replaced at the same time as the discs. Easy to do and I think it would have lasted indefinitely.

This is what I have done.
So far holding up after a week or two.

Not had cause to do this fix myself, but just a thought.

I prefer not to disturb bearing packs, often the start of the death of them.

If you're able to see the bolt then you can probably loosen it. If so could you cut a slot in a big washer, )to make a 'C', slide it on and relighten?

My mate helped me get a couple of washers on underneath the bolts. The bottom bit was still touching so we bent it back slightly with some mole grips. Problem solved. Shame I'm now having issues with the headlights, but that's for another day/thread... problem solved, I think, for now!

The dust shields are just that, if you don't mind cleaning the wheels a bit more regularly just remove the disc and the shield retaining bolts and cut the shield off with a tin snips, better than removing the hub and bearing, one benefit of this is better airflow round the inside of the disc to aid cooling, not really an issue on the road but worth considering if you do track days.
