Rattling brake dust shields

Both brake shields on the front of my car are rattling away like a bag of (tin) spanner’s when I’m driving on anything but a billiard table smooth road so basically everywhere

Is this a common problem? I’m expecting wheel off, disc off etc to sort....hopefully. Anybody had similar issues and any tips to remedy?

They will have corroded around the mounting holes and broken. My near side one is currently held on by cables ties as new shields are silly expensive.

To replace, the hub has to come off and 99% of the time that means new bearings. As part of a suspension overhaul i had my F/O/S one replaced as it had gone the same as yours.

Back Plate £60.00
Bearing £70.00. :headbang:

All 3 E86 I've worked on (including mine) have cable ties holding those shields in place. It breaks around a single spot weld, conveniently where you can loop cable ties through.

Had one of mine done recently. What a racket it made. Couldn't believe the cost of the back plate. No bearing mentioned / required though.

You were lucky there mate, my bearing was practically destroyed when removing the hub. But all good now.

Spent a bit of time earlier trying the cable tie approach. Will see how that fares on its next run.

Has anyone got any pics handy of this cable tie fix? Noticed tonight mine is doing exactly this - will probably get it done properly at some point but would be handy to know how to just resolve the rattling for now.

I did the cable tie option for a while but then a bearing went so I had them replaced by the garage at the same time. Got a pair on ebay for £50. Now silent and shiny and black too. They've since gone up in price a small amount

Thanks, probably can’t get the work done on the bearing right now but need the rattle sorted :o going to try do it with wheel on and feeling around hence why pics are useful

might be tricky with the wheel in place but good luck. I jacked mine up on a trolley jack with the wheel off and had a good amount of room to get in to see where to tie it to so it wasn't in the way of anything moving.

My rears were grinding terribly, but as the handbrake went through it I replaced both shields and complete brake refresh as well as bearings at the same time. That was painful cost wise though.

Had a look think I found a way of securing it, around the front and the arm, I just needed to order some extra long cable ties arriving tomorrow via Amazon

Bought a 50cm cable tie and managed to get it around the shield it’s stopped rattling for now but definitely want to replace it!

On searching on here saw a post to a US site that supplied them in two pieces so you don’t need to take the hub off … as it seems the bearings fall apart. Mind you might be worth doing the bearing anyway if it’s that bad?

Advice?

So am I correct for your comment that these sheilds are also on the rear?

Yep, they were very well vented in my case. Reversing the car sounded like I was scraping the floor

If you remove the brake disc you can then use large washers to secure. After my first one went as i mentioned earlier in this thread, the other side started rattling so i thought sod that! Took the disc off and got full view of the bolts, secured them and been fine ever since.
