Barack Obama: President of the USA

takedown8, your position is that of a leftist/socialist, maybe even Marxist. So it is no surprise that you embrace the manifesto of the young Senator from Illinois and his political cohorts. I believe Sir Thomas More wrote about your idealism, your perfect world, did he not?

You and some others here appear to be agent provocateurs for the Left. Perhaps a long diatribe of disagreement that would eventually denigrate to name calling would reinforce your radicalism on this forum. I will resist the allure.

After all the passionate perspectives rendered here by our neighbors to the north, it is my opinion is that I really don't give a good shite what any of the Canadians think.

What in his statement was Marxist? A lot of people are throwing the Marxist label around lately, often errantly.

Not having been to Canada, but having friends from there, they have told me that there are no real measures taken by the government there; signs are printed, classes are taught, ballots are printed, and, in most of Canada, you don't press "2 for English."

Just a point of clarification - I'm not sure where in Canada your friends are from, but all federal government services are offered in our 2 official languages. In addition, many provincial services are the same, and many large businesses service in both French and English. We have to "press 2 for English" all the time mate.....of course if you are French you can always press 1.

Cheers, Al

"agent provocateurs for the Left"

What you see as radical we see as normal....just so you know it goes the other way too mate. :D

And that's okay with me. You can express your opinions and I can express mine. We don't have to agree.....after all it's only a discussion on a internet forum.

OK, here's my last post on this thread--Obama is all for "redistributing" wealth. Wealth is EARNED not distributed, unless you believe as does Karl Marx. I WORKED for every cent I have and don't want to give to those who don't want to. Assist you with education so you can get a better job, absolutely. Pay you to sit on your ass and spit out kids, not hardly.

And as to what the world thinks of who we elect as president, I couldn't care less.

U calling my second home just an internet forum??

I am pleased to announce that all the Chicagoland (remember I was born and raised there) cemeteries had a 100% voter turnout...again.

If you check the records well, you may find that you have been voting there for years, along with every member of the Dallas Cowboys.

I believe that the Chicago political system works for Chicago and should go no further than the city boundry.

Seriously, it wouldn't surprise me that I would still be on the rolls. My Dad voted in 2 general elections after he died.

I'm betting he voted Democratic

I don't hold the legalization of gay marriage near and dear to me - perhaps I need to to be a real Canadian? As for Univeral health care  Not what it's cracked up to be - like any other system, it has flaws; namely the rich getting faster access and better care - the truth hurts.

One is from Newfoundland; needless to say, only the old guy that lives on the end seat of the pub doesn't speak English, and no one has figured out just what language he actually speaks. The other is from Quebec, where, according to him, nearly everyone speaks French, but about half understand English.

But, alas, no melting pot in Canada. Maybe that is why Quebec keeps trying to become independent. Hard to share values if you have no communication.

Between Canada and England, they offer ample evidence that socialize medicine leaves a lot to be desired. In the US, sure, the rich can afford the best physicians, however, no one has to wait in line. Always the good, the bad, and the ugly with any system.

The fact remains - Canada is (federally) officially bilingual, and services are in both languages. In most of Canada, you DO have to press 2 for English.

Our country is not founded on the idea of assimilation (i.e. the melting pot). As a society, we have no problems with people keeping their cultural identity. It works very well for us actually and I would not have it any other way personally. The issues with Quebec go back to before the US was a nation, so you are bit off the mark there mate.

Cheers, Al

The system here has it's negatives as well as it's positives - no doubt about that. However hearing what my work colleagues in the US pay for insurance premiums for health care, the cost to the inidvidual seems to be a bit of a wash (between premiums there and taxes here). Personally the French seem to have a system that works very well, and I would love to see some of the concepts there implemented in Canada.

Cheers, Al
