AGM Battery?

Hi all,

Reckon the car needs a new battery and was going to buy a Bosch battery off GSF. However, a mate has said something to me about the car likely requiring an AGM battery? If this is the case, can I just switch my current battery (which I am quite sure is not an AGM) to an AGM without any issues?

I'm pretty sure all the M cars where fitted with an AGM from factory...

I read somewhere that AGM batteries were black and non-AGM were white, mine is white. Perhaps not the original?

Either way, any suggestions on which AGM battery to buy/where from?

Scrap my idea that my battery is not AGM. It is the black, original (I presume) BMW battery. So therefore I should be able to fit my new AGM battery without issue.

Any suggestions on the battery to get, what spec, price etc?

I'm still on my original battery in the Z4, but have always used a Bosch S5 when I've needed a replacement.

I don't believe an AGM battery is required, as plenty of others on here have swapped to an S4/S5.

However, I know Bosch do an AGM battery too (S6), but don't know if it's available in our spec. I'll have a look.

The AGM batteries are not cheap, and I dint know why BMW fitted one in the Z4 as it was intended to be used with the new generation on stop/start vehicles with regeneration systems and their unique power usage profile.

I figure I may just continue with the AGM batteries. I reckon the car is provided with one for a reason and with the whole coding issue between the AGM and non-AGM batteries, I'd rather keep things straight forward.

Anyone bought an AGM battery recently? If so where/which one?

I installed a Bosch S5 over four years ago and its never missed a beat
I only use the car at the weekend so I'm pretty impressed with the battery.

I've been running mine on an AGM 'race' battery for several years. No issues at all.

Just remember if you do go this route you have to have a special charger should you ever need to do so.

AGM battery bought today from BMW for £125. Not bad I thought!

when it comes to batterys i like to stick with the oem item, my first one lasted 6 years... not bad at all imo, i then swapped to a lightweight one that died in less than a year, i then picked up a new OE item.

I put a replacement AGM battery in a couple of years ago. Works great, even left for long periods.
