30i Prices

I have found that living in Scotland you have to travel south to get better choice and better quality cars.
Cars locally (within 100 miles) always seem to be higher miles, lesser spec, require a lot of detailing to fix bodywork and generally beaten up more. When looking for both cars the ones we looked at didnt even warrant asking any questions about them as the tatty unloved look of them put you off straight away.
Funny enough after looking around nationally the one I wanted was on Skye. Went up on the train from Glasgow, the scary bit was crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct and all the Chinese tourists running across the carriage to take pictures, thought we were going to derail. Jumped off at Malaig and got the ferry across and then back over the Skye bridge and back down to Fort William and then Glasgow.

That sounds just like here!

Good to see I have sparked some healthy debate, which is always good.

Seems some have misconstrued my comment about a local car, Mr Andy of Argyle was spot on...what I meant was I am always going to miss out on a car to a trader unless it’s almost on my doorstep. Take the one I mentioned in my mixed tyres post. It was a 33k miler, on at Ā£8950, it appeared on AT on Sunday afternoon. I immediately contacted the seller, he replied fairly quickly and I established the car was in Bournemouth, he said he would send me base details of the car and service information that evening. Which he did, I asked him a couple of further questions, he said he would answer those and volunteered to send me copies of the service history etc on the Monday morning. For my part I replied thanking him and telling him if what he sends me on the Monday morning checked out I would come down in Tuesday to view and buy. Bournemouth isn’t going to win me the my journeys further than your journey competition, but it is a 5 hour journey.

He duly sent me through the info I asked for on Monday morning which all looked good. Then within 30 minutes of the first email arriving, while I was working on train times and before I’d even had a chance to offer him a deposit, he sent me a further mail saying, sorry but I just sold it to a local dealer.

No doubt I will get the chance to buy that same car in a few days with 3 new tyres, my guess is at... what do we think £11,500?

Far from not being prepared to travel, I had a discussion with gwatson about his white one in Aberdeenshire (at least I can buy a ticket and try to win that one :D ) I was the first to enquire into the black one that a newbie posted on here recently in Altrincham. Incidentally that one was Ā£11k odd as recall, it sold before any of us got the chance to ask a question and appeared on a dealers forecourt a few days later at Ā£14k odd. There have been several others all over the U.K. I did draw a line at trying to get Mr Silverstar to sell me his from the Costa’s. Although Mrs Boris said she’d get it for me...but she’d be two weeks :D

I get the dealer has overheads, often a dealer car is the sensible option, I have bought many cars from dealers. I get you pays your money you takes your choice, but at the end of the day like everyone else I worked hard for my money and I want value for it. I think in the main the comments above show an understanding of where I am coming from. There should be plenty of good Ā£9 or Ā£10k cars out there and I would like to pay just that for them, I am not going to pay Ā£2-3k beyond that because a dealer now has that car on his forecourt and has given it a tickle, and put a Ā£250 warranty on it. I think somebody above mentioned it’s a simple case of supply and demand, you are spot and I am refusing to buy at those prices, that’s exactly how supply and demand works I beilieve.

I think that’s the problem for you Boris..you’ve watched the market, it’s changed, upwards, and your metaphorically crying by a quiet river because of what has happened..

I’m amazed at the market bounce back..Rishi would wish that for the UK economy..

There is plenty of supply..220 E89s on AT today..

The problem is you go from a newbie with no concept of value / goodies etc to a 5th Dan in E89s..then you get very very fussy..coupled that to a marked upward trajectory and you’re bound to be upset..

As Mr Wilks predicted by this December prices will be back down..

Having looked around if you are willing to accept compromise you can get say a 23i for £7k but you can spend £13k..

Similarly on N20 powered cars a 2 to 1 price range..

It does look as you expect that the cars missing goodies fetch much lower prices..

So Boris, buy a 15 year old Micra and wait for Christmas..bound to be a goody by then?

My very helpful suggestion..

I don't think he will need to wait so long  been a crazy year so far & that comes on the back of a steady decline in values across the whole Z spectrum the last 12 -18 months with only the ZMR holding values they have been at for the past 2-4 years .
Wasn't too long ago "Mack" snapped up what i consider a bargain 12plate Msport 2.0i off Number5 around £8k & "Greg81" struggled to give away his 10 plate grey Msport 30i for £8k :o both cars now i would expect to sell £1500 up & that's simply due to market demand but its a false dawn imo & within a couple of months i fully expect the current values to take a dive
Advice to Boris if the coins are tight or you are wary of seeing a drop in your stake soon as you drive away is sit tight & watch the market a while longer .

Sage words from a 10th DanšŸ‘Œ

As someone also looking for a 30i this is all very interesting.
I'm in Northern Ireland and normally if I found the right car on the mainland I'd have no problem hopping on a plane and bringing it back. I can't do that now, there's hardly any flights to the main airports and none to what were the regional small ones. I don't see this changing much soon either.
Of course I could buy a car 'blind' and just get it delivered (this is pretty much exactly what i want for example - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2010-10-BMW-Z4-3-0-Z4-SDRIVE30I-ROADSTER-2D-254-BHP/133462357162?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649) but to me it's a big risk when spending £12-14k.
I've seen one over here which is very nice but a bit lower spec (no Nav or powerfold mirrors mainly), which I'm very tempted with, but then am I just buying it because it's there rather than waiting for exactly the right one, which might never appear. It's not so much the prices but the accessibility for me.
Suppose i should put a wanted ad on the forum and see if anything turns up.

Wanted ads are always a good idea - many times, I've seen that give someone the final nudge to actually offer their car for sale, having not been advertised previously.

I exchanged a few messages with Baza on here recently, when I was looking for a car for my mate Chris (who settled on a 23i in the end, for similar reasons) but for a few reasons he was not yet ready to part with his amazing sounding 30i. Might be worth a PM in his direction.

There was also another nicely specced 30i (auto, nav, 71k) about 20 minutes from me on Facebook, which didn't seem to be on other sites (though I haven't been looking very closely at 30i models). The ad is still live (at 9k) I'll grab a screen print if that would help.

Not sure this link will work:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2382839641938630/

Edit: yes it does. I see iDrive, heated seats, extended leather, auto lights, auto wipers, 294 wheels, PDC at the very least.

Edit 2: if I actually read the ad, cruise, bluetooth and folding mirrors too.

Good luck with your quest Boris , if you want possibly the best (not cheapest) 30i currently available take a peek in the forum classifieds at "pink pineapples".

Haha cheers dude

To the OP, the 30i is still my pick of the E89 range...I'm sure one will come along eventually :driving:

Thanks for that - mileage a bit high ideally, but otherwise perfect! Might send him a message, I think Bristol is one of the few places I could get to.

If I sold you mine I will be in the same boat as you are, having a hard time looking for another one! :poke:

You think that’s bad, you’d also have to put up with my wife for two weeks

Thanks Tim, for flagging that one up. It’s a little higher mileage than ideal, but if everything stacks up it wouldn’t stop me.

Back to business, I have reached out to the owner on Facebook to see if I can get more info. At least service info and reg. I have found if a car says ā€œservice historyā€ not FSH it usually means sporadic servicing, but let’s see.

Meantime it says it’s been for sale for 35 weeks, seems a few people on here are looking at present, so I wonder if anyone on here has had a look at it already?

Quite difficult to get a good judgement from the ad, but I have a hundred experts all looking right now. Any first impressions or observations ?

OK, if anyone doubts how good I am at this, that one has been for sale for 35 weeks, I have just enquired about it, the guy has now replied, he sold it.... yesterday

Not again Boris! :(

While they were E86s not E89s after buying my MC last December (that had to be gone by Christmas) and selling my 3.0Si at the beginning of the year I've noticed prices generally seem to have risen significantly in the last couple of months.

Maybe people are buying cars because they aren't having expensive foreign holidays?

I bought all of my Z4s privately and honestly prefer that - it gives you a chance to judge whether the previous owner was an enthusiast who cherished the car and you don't get that buying from a dealer. Even if they do give you a warranty, which often turns out to be worthless anyway!

I hope your search ends well.

Thanks chaps, have to admit I am now finding it quite funny, you really couldn’t make this up.

I am going to play the long game, so let’s see how it pans out. I still have the E85 to enjoy the summer weather. So I’ll keep the powder dry and see what comes up in the next few months. Let’s face it, with all that’s going on in the world, not being able to buy a sports car is pretty trivial. I’ll keep half an eye out in case something that I can get to quickly comes up, with a bag of used notes and a can of mace to ward off traders in the glovebox :D

Found mine 450 miles away. Arranged a BMW PP Inspection. I used that information to haggle the dealer down a bit and paid certified check (that's cash for you old guys). Then I arranged transport because I was too buzy working ( that's making money for you young guys) to leave and get it. :P

I did see this one when it came up, ok time to offend a few, but i’m not a big fan of the white Z4. No need to get enraged, I know many of you own them, we all know such matters are 100% personal choice. No need to post to tell me why they are they are the best, I get it... White Cars Matter šŸ‘

Also probably going to offend PP now, and PP absolutely no offence is meant here. The car is a great example, it appears to be in pretty much perfect condition in every respect. However, while many cars have flown off the shelves in recent weeks /months this one will celebrate its 7th month of being on sale this Saturday. There can only be one reason it hasn’t sold and that’s down to it’s valuation.

Hence it does seem a rather odd idea to flag this one up to me given the whole thread is based on my ranting and throwing my toys out of the pram over pricing.

An option maybe for this community is to encourage members to pop down the road to any Zs that forum punters are interested as a local resource / competent assessor to allow an assessment / liaison / photos etc..

I would quite fancy a drive out in that basis.. :driving:
