I am going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons - if you are 6' 4" like me and need 4 genuine seats and an ///M car, you have to be mad to consider the M3 or the 1M... E60/61 M5 is the only way and the more I think about it, the more I am in love with the V10... Probably the greatest engine ///M has ever developed...

Its a lot of weight up front and the SMG is out of date. Ridiculous power though and a great handler (I've never tried it). There is a really cool Hamman "widebody"version of the M6 too. I'm 6.4" and have no probs in the Z.

M3 has 4 seats no?

E39 M5 is lovely and cheap and the ultimate wolf in sheeps clothing (sounds like a DTM at full bore). If I absolutely had to have 4 doors that would be the one for me.

The V10 engine does not weigh more than the V8 in the E39 M5. I have no problem with fitting in the Z - I have owned my car for 4.5years and 45k miles - by now I would have known if I had a problem

Rear seats space in the M3/1M is a token gesture compared to the E60 when I get myself comfortable.

E39 M5s are awfully nice - my best man owns the most powerful NA E39 M5 in Europe - A Nowack 500 - look it up on the M5 board - and I have driven it a few times :driving:, but the E60/E61 is in a different league in its ability to pile on speed... Just look at the vids of the Ring taxi...

As i said before the only thing that i do not like about the 1M is the engine. I realise why they chose it but i just do not feel it's worthy of an M badge. The rest of the car i like, the driving experience is apparently very good, the looks are appealing to me and the price isnt bad if you go for a basic car, which i would.

I have no use for a 4 seater at the moment and i'm planning to keep the MC for quite a few more years but as a future used car buy the 1M looks pretty damn good.

thats a point. I'll never understand why the Z4M was never simply called an M4... at least its got a proper M engine but we get the same badgin (not that I care) as the other late M preps.

Bahh, they're just sneeking in turbo charged era...

Well, I've had a closer look and the man at BMW told me a very funny joke that he called a finance quote. Z4 is staying. Kids will have to walk.

Wise move :)
I had a think about one but to have all that depreciation again for a car that's about the same performance level (overall) with 4 seats (I only need 2) and that is likely going to depreciate rather quickly, to me, even costs aside it was not really a step up other than to have a new car. With costs taken into consideration just not worth it. The Z4 M is a propert M sportscar, rare, and how they should be, low down, two seats and like a missle.
Personally I don't like the E30 M3 comparisons, today is a different era. Also bMW should also have given the car individual numbers rather than all being "1 of 500" or whatever the total is :).
Might be a good second hand buy in a year or so but I'm even more wary of second had turbo charged cars than NA. Already seen the odd clip of some hooligan spinning the rear wheels along roads, pointless. And many will end up chipped likely with much reduced lifespan IMO

Hell this is a Z forum. We love them for what they are:

Old school noisy impracticle uncomfortable beautifull NA and fast. Hooha. :)

True.. It's a real M car and I also don't understand why they did not cal it M4.... But M roadster or M coupe does also sound ok  Considering the M badges; I removed mine and it looked better and more undercover (people who know their cars, will know it's a BMW M). If it was an M3 or M5 badge then I would not bother me, but I don't like the look of only an M on the trunk and sides.

Agree actually, too many wannabes stick ///M badges on their 4-pot BMW's in an attempt to make it look something it's not.

I'm very tempted to do the same and take them of the Z

4 exhausts are my badge, the /Ms came off in minutes.

I also saw the 1M at Goodwood (also the one in the carpark - KE11YCL - twas a bloke)

looks fab, but it's the hype that's making me want to drive one, not the specs. I couldn't be arsed to even sit in it, but the new 6 was the star of the stand for me. (Or the old M5.. )

I want an M5 Touring :sweetheart:

It's just not about Turbos.

Am I the only one who thinks of the 1M is like the Kings new clothes.

It doesn't look good, it doesn't have a real M engine, the interior is horrible, it costs nearly as much as my Z4MC was when new yet it looks like it's been shaped by a schoolkid in a woodwork lesson with blunt tools and no talent towards woodworking.

I have no doubt it drives well and you don't see it when you are driving but just seeing my refelection in a shop window would be enough to ruin my day.

The joy of M cars is that they are cars you desire not need. The 1M is the kind of car that you would only buy if you had to accept compromise as you need the extra seats.

At least the Z3MC had the decency to be so fugly that it is beautiful but to me the 1M is just another strp towards devaluing the value of an M badge. Using it's "brand value" to sell cars.

Check this out. Gratuitous 1m promo.

Hi all, haven't been on here for a couple or three years. (Is Wondermike still around here, or was that on another forum? :| )

Deposit down on 1M but more as an option than as a firm commitment at the moment.

I actually like the looks. But I've also had a couple of Z4MRs in the past and I REALLY like (and miss) the scalpel-like sharpness of that engine  So; a very tidy low miles high spec Z4MC would also be VERY tempting and I'd save a good few quid depreciation. I also wonder whether or not BMW have that twin turbo motor totally sorted these days as regards the overheating issues that affected at least the earlier 335i models...... OTOH, the 1M does get some bloody good press and I can't imagine that this is all without good reason/foundation. Even the motor is reported as being a riot. And I do like the idea of all that torque - I had a 335d for a while back in late 06 and the immediate thrust was really quite addictive (and with 33mpg driven hard too). As ever, decisions, decisions, decisions :headbang:

Mike

I think either Hartge or ACS can tune yoçu 335i so why bother. I think its a better looking car and the mods + second hand car will be cheaper. There is no shame in a car prepared by either of these companies compared to an ///M.

 +1

You know if a car deserves to have an M on it if you can take the badges off and still tell it's an M :poke:

What is it with us lads and our four exhausts!! From aged 6 or so I used to draw (including on furniture :o ) very rudimentary pictures of the rear of cars with four exhausts (the most clearly drawn bit!) after looking at pics of Ferraris..... I guess now aged 50 that pre-occupation is still with me

I am a big fan of the 1M - in my eyes it is stunning!

However with the deals available right now on the E92 M3 - that worked out cheaper and although I wanted a 1M I bought an M3.

Struggled with the decision for a while but now I am just so excited about the V8 I can't tell you!

Will miss the Z4MC though. Longest I have ever owned a car - that shows me how much I have enjoyed it.

The looks don't do it for me (front bumber/splitter especially, but the general proportions of the car too). I'm also really not sold on the engine / forced induction. Similar engine in the 135i i found to be really not very involving (too much mid range, not enough kick at the top). There's also no rag-top and despite being one of those people who never saw the point of convertibles until i had one, now i do i think i need one!

Should i decide at some point that i need both our cars to have 4/5 seats i suppose i might put in on the short list, but what is there that's as raw/involving as the Z4M but which also has seats in the back?

I would probably widen the net a bit, and so it would be competing with 911s, XKRs and the like on my short list, and if they are propping up used prices by constricting the supply it would probably lose

Let me start by saying I do love the Z4M - I ought to, as I've had 3 of 'em over the last 5 years (amongst other cars). As regards the 1M; I do myself really like the looks - whilst a bit odd, the coupe for me is a decent looking car, and more so as the 1M. I also like the fact that the 1M doesn't yell 'look at me' like a Z4 far more so does. At 50 and balding and grey; I just don't wanna look all 'mid-life crisis and $hit' anymore when cruising with the roof down. I definitely like the understated Q car thing of the 1M where the car to most punters looks pretty ordinary (albeit admittedly a bit pumped up) whilst still packing some serious grunt! My own 1M coupe order has just been confirmed and acknowledged by BMW - it seems I've got in at the last minute for one of the last cars due in Jan 2012 and I gotta say I'm very much looking forward to taking delivery!

Best to all (is Wondermike still around here these days??),

Mike
