Atacama Yellow 35is build thread

My 35is is sitting down at the rear. The Ohlins ride height suggested is 367/367..against original of 378/367 mm.

Current set up is lower than that by some way.

Two compounding issues..

Ohlins only does one kit for all E89s..

28i manual is 1,750 kg with 47.3/52.7 distribution = 922 kg on rear (front 828kg)
35is is 1,895 kg with a 49.3/50.7 weight distribution = 960 kg on rear (front 935kg) and you wonder why the 35is doesn't handle as well as a N20!

In addition I carry a full size 326M front wheel in the boot when touring = 22 kg and toolkit = 10kg

Plus full fuel

And almost ALL the time roof down when hooning!

That's about 50kg or roof moving back say a metre

So with some bags and a full tank of fuel (BMW weights are zero fuel)

So the rear weight is over a 100kg more than a 18i/20i/28i on the rear wheels ie about 10%

In addition I'm going up to 245/40 19 and 285/35 19 onm my 437M wheels.

The 70nm rear Ohlins spring is jacked up about as far as it can go.

My 96 nm/mm rear springs arrived today from the States! Stock Ohlines in 70 nm/mm

Just discovered that Eibach do a whole series of these springs in various rates 60/79/88/96

https://www.eibachshop.co.uk/pages/eibach-racing-spring-catalogue
Going to fit these Eibach babies to help wth adjustment and reduce 'twang' and 'boing' from the springs.

We'll see how it goes..now I found the Eibach catalogue I can go to an intermefiate spring rate if required!IMG_3793.JPGIMG_0663(1).JPGScreenshot 2025-10-24 145451.png

It does look low at the rear but the car is facing up hill. Does it sit like that on flat ground?

Surely those are GVW, not curb weights?
I know BMWs are heavy but surely no E89 can weigh 1,900kg dry?

Your car can't weigh over 2 tonnes by the time it is on the road? That's not possible.....or is it?

My 2013 E class merc estate only weighed 1800kg when fully laden with metal (on a scrappy's weighbridge).

The US brochure says 3450 lbs unladen which is 1563kg

And with the 28i being around 1480 there only about 70kg between them instead of petes 145kg .
Even if these weights are dry there would be the same weight added to each filling them with fluids (almost)

Had a look in my owners handbook this morning and it states the for 35is.

Kerb weight ready to drive with 75 kg loads, filled up to 90%, without optional fittings. 1600 kg

Permitted gross weight. 1855 kg
Front axle load limit. 870 kg
Rear axle load limit. 1000 kg

Well spotted!

Got the message! Please!!!-:)

So rework off the numbers from the US 2014 Sales Brochure! Unladen Weight!

Converted in kgs

28i manual 1480kg 47.3/52.3 ratio
35is 1609kg 49.4/50.6 ratio

28i 700kg / 774kg
35is 795kg / 814kg

So the 35is is still 95kg heavier on the nose and 39kg on the rear

As discussed add spare wheel/tools etc and the rear is 32kg + maybe close to 50kg+ if the roof is folded in

ie rear load for me roof down with wheel / tools is 120+kg more than maybe Ohlins planned for!Screenshot 2025-10-25 121938.png

Not a criticism just wanted to make sure I had the correct info.
Of course…I’m glad my error was spotted..not ..that in this case..it dramatically affected the logic of the argument..

Complex self dug hole due to buying incorrectly some 285 rather than 275 by 35 profile rears for my 437Ms..

The 235/40 19 is tye wrong rolling circumference now..

So popped them off and put some 245/40 19s on..

Pic shows change in diameter of the two..quite noticeable..IMG_0697.jpeg

235/40/19 is the same rolling circumference as 245/40/19 though surely…?

235/35/19 is different rolling circumference to 245/40/19 no…?
