In the American English dialect we pronounce the letter "Z" as Zee.
In almost every other language that uses the the letter "Z" it is pronounced as Zed or very close to Zed which sounds like Ted but with a "Z" instead of a "T"....

As for the pronounciation of "Melbourne", well as long as the Qantas flight gets you there, who cares? But for the record, we kind of lose the "r" sound in our pronounciation of the word - more like "Melben".

Water? We pronounce it "wawta"

I guess we have gotten lazy when it comes to our "r"s.
