Your experiences of aftermarket suspension on the Z4 MC

Thanks for the comments guys.... I'm
All for the constructive not so sure comments also....
Re the hardtop..... I simply love it black and it will defo be staying that way.... In the flesh at least it looks awesome......

The car is feeling pretty serious now....

Very pleased...

Keep the hardtop black as you want, just hurry up and get the a pillars done to match :poke:

So how much lower is it than standard?

its around 15mm lower, i can get my hand right to middle of each tyre i will run the car for 3 weeks and probably raise it slightly when its been aligned/corner weighted at lichfield imports.....

i called centre gravity and he wanted 540 quid to do an alignment and corner balance with ride height set..... he lists a million different things he'll do but i simply want a ride height set, corner balance, i kinda feel like hes taking the piss alittle.....
i know hes good but seriously i dont need him checking the work ive done, ive done it meticulously, more to the point he wants to charge me for the pleasure.

Re the hardtop, i LOVE it..... and will be leaving the pillars silver but will add some further black details to tie it all in!!

thanks for all the comments guys!! gorgeous day to be working on the car, i just had to take the day off!!

Looks good...with black pillars and mirrors it would look better....as a coupe it would be great :D
In all seriousness though, I love the black roof, but the pillars do look slightly odd.
Can't wait ot hear how it handles on the track

Guys what everyone's opinion on the ride height of the car, take a look back at the other pics on previous page, I also took some up close ones of the gap, I can get index and middle fingers comfortably in the arch...

The other pics the car seems lower due to shadow in wheel well area.

Any feedback would be great please.

Height looks about right to me, much lower and it'll be a pain to drive over bumps.

thanks for the opinion, i was feeling ok but some instances it seems a touch low, i did a very slow speed bump test and it doesnt scrape on even the largest of bumps...

was thinking about raising it slightly but that would really create a large gap.

If it handles well, leave it as is. It looks good, neither like an off-roader nor like a 17 year old's slammed Saxo :)

im debating to lift it 5mm but again will probably leave it, once things settle in alittle longer ill probably bring it up slightly before the alignment, never been a fan of lowered cars, ideally i wanted to run stock ride height but kw told me not to. :-(

ok so i had alittle more seat time with the car today and decided to run some broken back roads..... this is with the race dampers, linear race springs and solid mounts offered by the clubsports (dont confuse clubsport with v3, they're completely different and share no components), the v3 is a high end road shock, the clubsport pushes you into a race damper thats pretty uncompromising....

if i run the kw nurburgring recommended settings the car feels fantastic, alive and frentic like im hardwired into the car, it can soak up the small/medium sized bumps with ease and although very firm, offers much better control, body roll on road tyres is non existant, and i can see to get the best from these setup im going to need to get the cups back on, im putting the power down but still lighting up the traction control deep into 3rd......

DSC off shows an edgy vehicle on the road, the stock setups understeer into for me at least a progressive oversteer is gone, understeer resistance is very high so warning of the rear going is short and sharp, with the traction control off, the car smoke the tyres at will from 2nd/3rd gear exiting corners so again you need to be very careful.

back home, set the dampers to road setup and stark contrast appears, much more compliance but again still stiff, the car does no crash or bang at all, my high riding car soaking up all the bumps and the solid top mounts feeding in all the roads data, with the softer settings power is transmitted to the ground easier and can be used during smaller compressions.....

braking CONFIDENCE has improve massively from the stock setup where those giant brakes felt like the car was literally doing a stoppy, the rear wheels would loose purchase on the road and begin to lock on and off, thats gone, square braking and nice tyre marks on a 70mph stop,

All in all, very very pleased with the car, its feeling pretty special now, could i live with the clubsport 3 ways on a day to day basis???? sorry but no, its to much, and its highest settings its stil imo pretty low, its firm and constantly changing the settings is annoying. I can see however, with road legal slicks on this thing wil be an absolute animal so ill get the cups back on and sell the ps2s and swap between Pss and psc now i have my new 18s in the garage.

for my use of the car these are perfect, sadly ive had no track time this year but will be doing my first all day session on the 6th september weather dependant and will really dialling in the settings, camber is currently set @ -2.6, ride height is 10-12mm lower than stock with plenty of travel. Im 100% satisfied with the choice.

items to note;

The remote canisters would on a normal caliper setup car get in the way of doing a pad change as the bolts would be hindered, on my BBK equip car this is a no issue as the pads drop in from the top.
The solid uniball billet topmounts/camber plates introduce further NVH but really transmit lots of GOOD detail as well.
These setup NEEDS the reinforcement plates to protect and spread the load across the turret (cheap insurance imo)
The RE reinforced rear mounts are pretty awesome imo.... silent, remove the damper from under the car now also and completely rebuildable, i went with poly bushing withing the billet plates, again this added further NVH.
The car feels quite low imo at its higher settings.
The linear race springs are HARD.
The quality of the kit is literally second to none, its a shame its hidden under the car, its porn!!
Not imo DD material but if you hardy enough could easily be done.
Fitment was perfect and i mean perfect, every single piece fitted like the stock units.
Pay careful attention to the instructions noting specific sided items, some buts like the top mounts Arn't sided and need specific orientation.
Lots of scope for adjustment
Further weight reductions made with the kw clubsport, each damper and spring is lighter than stock.
The dampers and completely rebuildable....
haggle on the price and play venders off between each other.. i netted a nice discount doing so and spent the change on some new clothes for my son :-)
if you have a strut brace you need to special order longer studs which then need to be pressed into the top mounts.
Large step back in ride comfort
large step forward in dynamics with right settings in place.
This setup is completely silent in its operation, no rattles, bangs, creaks, nothing.
if anyone wants a suspension refresh i have a 11k mile stock suspension in perfect condition, great for the higher mile cars that want a refresh.

I will give the car 3 weeks and go for a proper alignment setup, level the car out again if its settled unevenly and will royally kick this things ass round my local venue. Sorry to repost some of these pics but thought id put in my initial review, excuse typos as im trying to do this rather quickly.

Also headsup to everybody, if your considering coilovers/ new suspension AMD is offering fitment AND alignment for 100 quid!!!! pretty fucking good!! Advert seen in latest Pbm Mag.

Byron,

I'm glad you've got it sorted and very pleased with the result! I'm sure that the new set-up will give you a HUGE increase in confidence, especially with Cup tyres. You'll find you use your brakes much less too because you'll be cornering faster. ENJOY!

Are these the clothes you've bought for your son?

HI BYRON,

WELL DONE ON A VERY DETAILED REVIEW. I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS POST AND WAS HOPING THAT YOUR VERDICT WOULD BE THAT THE CLUBSPORTS ARE USABLE RO EVERYDAY DRIVING. I USE MINE AS A DD AND WITH THE BAD ROADS WE HAVE IN MALTA FIND THAT THE RIDE IS TOO BOUNCY AND STIFF. AT HIGH SPEEDS THE CAR IS RATHER OUT OF CONTROL WITH ALL TEH BOUNCING AND CHANGING DIRECTION FAST IS SCARY. AFTER READING THE REVIEW BY EXDOS ABOUT THE AC SCHNITZER I WAS HOPING AFTERMARKET COILOVERS WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. LIKE YOURSELF I WOULD RATHER KEEP RIDE HEIGHT AS CLOSE TO STOCK AS POSSIBLE. WOULD THE KW V3'S BE MORE USABLE IN MY SITUATION? WOULD THE AC SCHNITZER SETUP BE MORE APPROPRIATE. I DON'T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH COIOVERS SO ANY ADVISE WOULD HELP.

GRETA WORK ONCE AGAIN AND GREAT CAR

THANKS

glad you liked the detailed review, i would have to recommend the the v3... ive ridden in a car with the v3 set to soft and it was 100% softer than stock with better control...... the Clubsport 3 way is just ALITTLE extreme.... they can be dialed back but only so much due to those linear race springs, the dampers are basically race dampers with specific valving, the car feels like a giant go-kart, but this is a feel im USED to and like, like i said i feel hardwired into the car, keyed into the road.... i can feel the ruts, the cambers, the steering wheel gently tugging at the wheels run bumps, to me thats exactly what i wanted..... would i want this setup everyday??? f**k no!! i find myself looking well ahead for iron covers and ruts and wholes in the floor..... if you get stand the step back in comfort you going to gain a very serious handling car, it feels wonderful and i havent had my corner balance and tweak up yet.....

Again they are completely silent in their operation.... but i must stress they are a large step back in ride comfort.... the bits i cant transpire into words is how the suspension deals with the bumps, you dont get the huge smash you'd expect in the road settings and im definitely covering ground quicker, on the smoother roads that im confident on.... the car is feeling very special.... id love to be following something serious like a GT3 to see how it fairs... straight line ill eat a gt3 like its a nova... cornering??? well thats a very different story so now its all come together i'd love to test that theory and see how we go..... For sheer cornering, handling and just awesome drive i rate the gt3s/gt3rs the TOP of the tree.

in answer to your question..... it simply boils down to how extreme you want to go....... reading your concerns id run the v3 set to hard, the use the stock rubber topmounts, you'll get a setup thats much better than stock but not pushing things too far..... also the v3 can be run at stock ride height, which was a feature i wanted..... i DO NOT want a car smacking the floor every deep compression....

hope this helps....

Thanks Byron. So are the 3way stiffer than the 2way clubsports?
So if I understood you correctly the v3's will be more comfortable than stock and still Handle better better right? If I decide to do track days I imagine the car will also handle better than stock right?

Exdos from your review your set up is a huge imp over stock. Is it bearable as a dd and where would you place it compared to the v3 and clubsports?

Thanks once again

Kerstien
