Y cable does not work with iPhone 4S WITHOUT iDrive

I'm a new BMW Z4 owner. Just bought a 2013 model Z4 2.0i WITHOUT the iDrive system.

Since I want to play music/podcasts from my iPhone 4S, I bought the official BMW Video/Audio adapter for iPhone/iPod, also called I believe the " Y cable.

Unfortunately after connecting it at the middle console, it does not play any music, neither through the AUX nor through the USB. It does however show the iPhone is charging.

Tried with an iPhone 3GS and an iPod Nano. No joy neither.

Any help out there?

Thanks,
Bjorn

You need both the audio jack and the USB plug connected together. You will also need to select the device on the stereo.

Z4 Gaz, thanks for the reply. I have plugged in both cables, USB and AUX.

What exactly do you mean by "selecting the device on the stereo" please?

Not sure on your model as I have the iDrive. It doesn't auto select on my system, I have to select it manually. I am sure another helpful member will be along to help shortly :D

Hi Biggles, i bought a cable off ebay for £4.90 (i have a 59 Z4...Iphone 4)....and it works a treat.
I dont have idrive.....but when you plug the phone in you cant control the music using the phone....you have to use the stereo (apologies if i'm teaching you to suck eggs here)
plug both in...and press audio on the stereo.....select ipod...and it will then show you your playlists....you just use the stereo to navigate and it will play the playlists in order.
I cant make mine shuffle for some reason so i dont think it does that

hopefully this is all you're doing wrong...if not change the cable.....if its getting power the usb port on the car is ok...so its probably the cable

You need to select the AUX option on the stereo.

Or...if you spend the £99 and buy the snap in MUSIC adapter, the stereo will recognise it as 'iPod', instead of AUX. This worked with connectivity 7HP on my car which gives you the USB interface in the centre console, which is where the snap-in adapter goes.

the stereo recognises it as ipod anyway just using the y cable....it will only say aux if you have a different portable music player. the snap in adapter is not for music...its for bluetooth to give the phone access to the cars Antenna.
