Winter storage :o(

car snow socks? :?
never heard of that one :tumbleweed:

Google is your friend :) They're only for use if you're stranded, not as good as winter tyres, but then they're £50 and not £1800 as another set of wheels and tyres would be.

I had the snow socks for the 1 Series and what a PITA those were to fit over 18s with sport suspension in the freezing cold at the side of the road, no thanks.

Snow socks.

My dauhgters boyfriend used them on his 1 series last year - it did provide him with improved traction to get moving - but it s not just about getting moving , its about stopping as well. Sometimes this is more important!

spike spiders are the answer, have these for my 3 series hub goes on and says on for most of the winter the chains then go in the boot. with the hub fitted it takes about 3 mins to fit them and off you go again.

the set i have are over 20 years old and still work fine!

p.s. just to clarify i am in no way affiliated with them!

since the Z is only a weekend toy i dont see the point in getting a set for it, however if i was going to be using it everyday thats what i would do.

Not sure I understand anyone SORN'ing their car, :? there are always dry days to take the car out over winter and I think if the SORN saving matters then best get a cheaper car

Completely agree I would never SORN my car, took it out today, sun out bit cold, but hat on and it was lovely!!!

I just dont fancy all that salt creeping in all the nooks and crannies. They think salt is going out of fashion up here!

Even without winter tyres, I'm still driving it... carefully :-)

Same here. Always have always will. Got an old 4x4 if it gets really covered in snow. Z4 just stays on the drive if not. The Z4 is treated like a working dog, not a show poodle! :P

Not worth the risk in my book without some decent winters on, as I said earlier I've been caught out on a nice sunny winters day and we had a blizzard and had to abandon the car, however this was on summer runflats, so your better off using your 4x4 all winter and laying the Zed up.

Still there are those who claim to be miracle drivers on forums :)

Tim.

My tester is if I can reverse the Z4 off my drive then the roads will be OK. If I can't, then I take out the 4x4.

I've been down the clay bar, polish, cuddle the car routine in the past but in the end you are just looking after it for the next owner! It doesn't earn you any more money come trade in if you just keep the car functionally clean.

Each to their own though. :)

True, although a car in good nick come sale time is A) more desirable to the buyer so more saleable B) worth on average £500 more than one thats been half heartedly looked after.

The only reason I'm not using the Z4 during the winter is down to not forking out over £1500 for a set of BMW winter wheels, plus I simply wouldn't use any rear wheel drive car on summer runflats this time of year, the cold kills traction etc. Just my take on it. Its how safe you want to be and making that decision.

There's no way mine is being tucked up til spring. I bought it to drive it and as long as the roads are safe enough, that's what I'll do.
I've got a freelander for bad weather but it'll only get used when it's too bad for the zed.

I used to think that Carol, but the unpredictability of this countrys weather means leaving the house in the morning clear and dry and driving through a blizzard and getting stuck by lunchtime :) Not much good if you left the Freelander at home and took the Zed lol.

I would have used the Z4 for winter but I wasn't paying £1500 for a set of 17" winter runflats as would prefer to stick with runflats on the Zed. I would hate to bump the Zed and no amount of driver skill will save you once you've lost grip at speed :(

Tim.

Tyres must be worth more than gold in Britain. Bought four ice x Michelin with shipping from the US to Germany for $500 USD.

Like you say Breaker its only looking after it for the next owner but its nice to keep it tidy whilst not going ott.

Anyway, it might be my daughter who gets my car! You have to be kind to your children, they choose the home you go into!

Might as well be.... You ain't going to use it anyway!! :poke:

Nothing like pulling the Zed out the garage in the spring, all lovely and shiny, salt free, chipless, no christmas parking dents, still smelling as new  :) and then go for a nice :driving:

Tim.

......for 5 miles then getting home and washing, polishing and sticking back in the garage incase the sun damages the paintwork... :P :P
