Returning home at 3am from a night out in South Shields with 3 of my mates I foot to the floor past Washington services. When the police caught up with me they told me they had clocked me at 112mph, must have been on a down hill section of the A1!
The two guys that pulled me over used to call in at a service station I worked at when I was a student. I always made them tea or coffee if I was working but they said even though they knew me they couldn’t ignore the fact I was doing 112mph. I was quite surprised when I got to court expecting a bad to find out they had only clocked me doing 99mph!
I got away with a £300 fine and a stern telling off from the magistrates.
It does show these guys have discretion on their side..I’m always super grovelling when I get stopped..my other tale related to this is back in about 1980 ish I was coming back from Devon on the A4 on my Laverda 1200 Mirage, went through Marlborough…coming out the other side was just about to make the move to hyperspace…saw the blue flashing lights of white Granada…stopped…usual interrogation and warnings of consequences of speed to my then girlfriend,,he stated I was did 53 mph in a 30 zone…I protested that it wasn’t that bad..he pointed out that was the average speed through Chippenham measured on his VASCAR computer and included two halts at red lights..I decided to accept the 53mph without the details..
