What's the fastest speed you got caught doing?

In 1993 I was the (not that) proud owner of a green 1.6L Vauxhall Cavalier. Returning home at 3am from a night out in South Shields with 3 of my mates I foot to the floor past Washington services. When the police caught up with me they told me they had clocked me at 112mph, must have been on a down hill section of the A1!

The two guys that pulled me over used to call in at a service station I worked at when I was a student. I always made them tea or coffee if I was working but they said even though they knew me they couldn’t ignore the fact I was doing 112mph. I was quite surprised when I got to court expecting a bad to find out they had only clocked me doing 99mph!

I got away with a £300 fine and a stern telling off from the magistrates.

It does show these guys have discretion on their side..I’m always super grovelling when I get stopped..my other tale related to this is back in about 1980 ish I was coming back from Devon on the A4 on my Laverda 1200 Mirage, went through Marlborough…coming out the other side was just about to make the move to hyperspace…saw the blue flashing lights of white Granada…stopped…usual interrogation and warnings of consequences of speed to my then girlfriend,,he stated I was did 53 mph in a 30 zone…I protested that it wasn’t that bad..he pointed out that was the average speed through Chippenham measured on his VASCAR computer and included two halts at red lights..I decided to accept the 53mph without the details..🙈

61mph in a 30 limit on my DTR125 on the Edinburgh Road in east end of Glasgow.
This sounds bad but the road is 3 lanes and the speed limit should be 40 at least.
Overtook an unmarked car while on the way to Queenslie ind estate.
Luckily this was in 1990 and all I received was 3 points and a £32 fine.

87mph in my TR7 on the A3 in about 1983. Mr plod said I should look in my mirrors more often because he had been following me for about 3 miles, I resisted the temptation of saying “well the speed I was going I wasn’t worried what was behind me. I was happy with 87 as I think that might have been an average

He breathalysed me (negative) gave me the full 10 minute roasting others have mentioned and sent me on my way without charge. Not sure if it’s true, but I was subsequently told (by a man in the pub) that he was unable to do me for the speeding as he was in the plod car on his own and it seems two were needed for a conviction. Also that is probably why he breathalysed me as that would have stood up if it was positive.

50 in a 30 zone in bala 2 weeks ago, admitted i was driving still waiting to hear from the courts
Clear straight road no cars ,cyclist or pedestrians ,just me and the bloody van .
So take care thro Bala .

36 in a 30 is the worst for me, I have however, got a phone call from a company that clocked me doing 105 in a 1200 Corsa on the M4 interchange about 7 years ago around 1AM

Baffled the hell out of me as as I had a company car which was certainly not a Corsa, they threatened to remove my insurance unless I slowed down, suddenly clicked it was my lad who had a telematics box fitted and as he was 18 and he had used my number as he was away with work quite a lot.

As you say the 10 minute roasting was given by me to him - didn't learn he got caught in he 4 series doing just over a ton on the M42 at 3AM, said he thought the cameras would be off at that time of night, told him they don't catch anyone at 3PM as its travelling at 30MPH there so they are only really of use at night.

Lesson learned - he has paid big time on insurance.

Only 2 infractions in 46 years :innocent:

First was 104 in a 525i in early 90s - got me a 28day ban.

Second in 2003 was kind of ironic....I'd driven from Basingstoke to Patterdale in Lakes in 3 hours (do the math) and was equally heavy footed on the way back (330d Sport) - none of which got me a ticket....until that is I got to within 1/4 mile from home where a stretch of road that had a 50mph limit when I'd left (and for as long as I can remember before that) had been changed to 30mph over the weekend and the new limit was being enforced with a camera van, which pinged me at 37mph :headbang:

Passed my test at 17 and a few weeks into being 18 got pulled doing 90 in my first MG metro, into the back of their jam sandwich, took my details, confirmed the car was mine and they let me go, never mentioned the speed I was doing. They were looking for a nicked red hatchback and were eliminating my car. Still can't understand how they didn't even mention my speed.

Other than that two yrs ago doing 37 in a 30, did the naughty boy course.

Admittedly it's sheer luck not judgement that that's all I've had over the years.....

160mph on a road in France driving an R8 to Le Mans a few years ago. 2,000 euro on-the-spot fine but they allowed me to keep my car (I had heard of people having their cars confiscated for less speed). I only had 1,000 euros in cash and they escorted me to a bank to get the rest. It had to go to court and the fine was increased to 3,000 euros. Expensive, but my licence was unaffected. Not proud of it. Daft really on public roads where you may have to depend on other people, with less talent.

Following on from the fastest you've been in a car (in which we seemed to lack documentary evidence)

Here we go again 🤮🎶
Spitting the same old digs, again and again

Just because something isn't backed up by photographs etc doesn't mean it didn't happen.

You're a know it all, better than the rest of us and way smarter(in your own opinion),but I don't have photographic evidence fir that either......

Following on from the fastest you've been in a car (in which we seemed to lack documentary evidence) I wondered what the fastest /most excessive speed you've been caught at, and whether you can show the ticket /indictment?

Here's my top trumps for starters..

I think comparing a Fighter jet you took an image off Google isn't fair comparison to cars
Got to compare like for like,Apples to Apples.
Not Apples to Watermelons,lol

I have a feeling their speed gun needed re-calibrating :P

Is that a typo , or did you drive off beachy head ,,

Well I didn’t get caught - but I did get a phone call from the supercar rental company while I was I doing about 270kph telling me that they will have to take the car back if I continue speeding excessively.

…I’d heard tales of UK police radar guns having had been inadvertently been locked on by US fighter aircraft carrying radar homing missiles but that’s a nice bit of speeding ‘evidence’…apparently 2013, it was a Polish Mig29..

Can't verify this:-

It’s probably true…the radar sensors on these aircraft to cover both modern and old air to air and SAM missile systems are wide band..so it’s plausible…. :tumbleweed:

I’ve been very lucky as I’ve been done for any really high speeds…always been given a bollocking and told to go easy.

Last ticket I got was on a hoon in Wales…where I got spilt up from my hooning companion after a local decided to block my perfectly safe overtake on the Evo Triangle. When I did get past I was not in a good mood for the next car I came to overtake, so tried to calm down a little by sitting behind him at 50mph for a few miles on some twistier parts of the A5 until a good overtaking spot came along. Road opened up, and I could see for about a mile, so indicated, dropped to 3rd and floor it…just as the knob I was overtaking decided to floor his 640D. He gave up before I did, which meant I was at the very top of 3rd at 105mph in a 60 NSL.

About half a mile further up the road, my hooning companion was waiting for me at a junction and moved off as he saw me. So I followed him and as I turned in I saw a police car heading my way quite quickly and just knew it was for me. He turned in about 100m behind me, followed for about half a mile and then flashed his fairy lights. I flashed my hazards to acknowledge but continued for a minute or two to a cut-in so we didn’t block the lane.

Had a quick chat, told me that he’d been set up on a parallel, higher road, and had seen the ‘race’ between me and the other car…but as I’d only hit that speed for a second before dropping straight back down to 70, that he’d be putting 70mph on the ticket

It was also the week before the FPN went up from £60 to £100, so thought I’d got off very lightly.

Other than that, it would have been 145mph in my e34 M5 on the A34 between Abingdon and the M4. I was just heading to the hotel very late one evening at about 80mph, when I saw something approaching quite quickly. It passed me at a decent speed, and I decided to have a bit of fun, so started accelerating hard to catch it up.

I caught up and stayed a few hundred yards behind it on the inside lane, but this thing (Saab 9000) just stayed on the outside lane at the same speeds for at least 10 miles. My junction was approaching, so I eased off a little…and so did the Saab.

Slowed down to below 80 as the exit was quite tight, and started indicating as I coasted down to my exit speed…the Saab did the same, but slowed down even more and was level with me as I went to exit the A34. Down comes the passenger window and I see two fully-uniformed police and a warrant card is flashed at me before the driver booted it off down the A34 again.

None of my high-speed (150mph+) 2am runs from Bristol to Liverpool, suspension testing on the M6 Toll, or playing with 911s on the A14 have ever garneted any police attention.

Bit harder to maintain those speeds with the amount of cameras around.

Bloody hell, stopped by the French fuzz at those speeds on the way to Lemans, it’s almost a miracle they didn’t take the car!

Such a shame they’re getting even worse with speeding now, their motorways are absolutely perfect for sustained high speed driving. France really is wasted on the French!

Caught doing? Probably around 80 mph on a city bridge. Cop didn't have the opportunity to clock me he just saw me and pulled me over along with another car. When he asked me how fast I was going, and I said around 45 mph I probably would have got away with it had the other idiot admitted to going 60 mph when I blew by him in my far from stock Triumph TR-3 (safety wasn't really an issue - straight line at 3 AM with only the two cars present).

Fastest on a public road, but not caught was around 145 mph in my old fiberglass Jensen with a built Mopar six-pack big block in it.

81mph in a 70  by scamera van in my Toyota Glanza on the A92 dual carriageway. Thankfully I had backed off from the somewhat more than that just prior

3 points and a £60 fine, its the only time I've been caught despite having been the proud owner of some rather spicy cars in the past :spy: :bag:
