What kind of induction system do you run?

I've always upgraded the induction system on my cars, usually replacing standard filters for manufacture specific ones. Is there any that stand out above the rest?

I have always liked/ used K&N Pod filters in my cars, but it seems that they don't flow any better then the standard paper unit, and they could make your MAF (airflow sensor) oily and affect its efficiency. K&N always sounds good tho

A few members are running Gruppe M induction kits, which look good but the price of them is a bit too sharp for my liking, around $1000+.

haven't really heard about any other kits, I would like to upgrade too, but I don't think there is anything significantly better then the OEM unit so far.

Not sure how the induction kit would affect a possible retrofit sound generator. Personally, I would go for the sound generator - much better noise than a 3rd party induction kit. You won't get any performance improvement from 3rd party, so only benefit is the sound imho.

K&N probably do a nice replacement filter though. But I remember someone saying it ended up being more hassle than just replacing the OEM one periodically?

BMW induction units are pretty good i.m.o. at getting the best out of the engine - the rest just take your hard earned dish for no noticeable effect in performance.

I would be astonished if the sound generator mod came close to the noise of something like a GruppeM, aFe or Simota (haven't heard personally), although it is all subjective - sounds upgrades really don't add anything to the experience for some people, me, love them :D

GruppeM is expensive (is carbon), but sounds amazing, very pricey though, relatively speaking (about 10% of the value of my car). Simota has limited application for the Z4, but looks like a cut price GruppeM - using K&N filter IIRC. aFe not too expensive and sound a bit mental - quite metallic... almost M like IMO. But you need to buy from the US and import, cheaper than buying through a UK supplier. Just. There is one for sale on here - not sure if it fits the 2.5. If it's a match I'd bag it, you can always sell on if it's not to your liking.

If you are looking to bring the noise then they're worth every penny IMO, but you would need an induction kit rather than a replacement panel filter. That said, I'd personally get the exhaust sorted first.

the sound generator only produces sound inside the car... whereas an induction kit produces noise outside the car.... unless I am mistaken

Yep, another good point. I for one  the induction noise I get from the gruppem

If you are looking for a reletively cheap induction up-grade then the Pipercross PX7000 will give you a similar gain to those that are 3 or 4 times the price on a standard engine. If you are going to go tuning mad then you might want to invest in something better quality at the start.

However if all you want (like most people in my experience) is a nice induction roar and a little gain (we are talking marginal if any at all with any induction upgrades when you do nothing else), then you'd be throwing your cash down the drain on anything much higher in price than this universal bit of kit.

Oh and before anyone slags off pipercross as a chav modification, you might want to test them on the dyno against these fancy carbon jobs, you'll find little performance difference. If you are concerned about a cold air feed to them (not really a problem unless you use your car for prolongued periods flat out i.e. a race track) then you can put in a cold air feed tube dirt cheap out of parts from fleabay.

What 'gain' is that then......?

I love the sound of the sound generator :) Never been keen on almost all aftermarket stuff though, it all sounds too chav imho. Loud, obnoxious, with popping from an engine without anti-lag... or even a turbo. The sound generator amplifies and filters, so it's still the engine making all the noise, just with the less desireable stuff filtered out. Sounds like a race car :P Also love how it's for the occupants only. I don't want to spoil people's time with loud engine sounds, I just want to enjoy them myself. Don't like aftermarket exhausts either, they're also loud and the sound comes from behind you when the engine is up front. It's all wrong!

Bah humbug!

Got this sitting at home waiting to be installed

You'd hate my chav mobile then :P To be honest mate, it's good that we don't all like the same things... very happy to differ. Bah humbug? Not a bit of it... I doubt there's much between how much we both enjoy our different cars

Get it done, you're gonna love it :D

One thing not in the instructions, there's a block of rubber under the factory air box which you may need to move slightly - not sure on the N52 setup.

Thanks for the heads up. Thinking of picking up the car this weekend. Just hoping I have the new wheels ready :?

It's OK as nobody hears your 2.0 anyway :poke:

Am I the only one struggling to work this one out? :? :poke:

I understand the point, i.e. sometimes it is totally fabricated noise made by the exhaust rather than the sound of the engine simply playing out.

Is that what I heard when I drove next to you in London or was it your exhaust? Whatever it was, it sounded great

With 'tuned' exhausts I've found you hear the noise behind you a lot more than in front. With induction noise it clearly comes from the engine, but exhaust noise seems to start from about mid-way along the car and backward.

I don't mind tuned exhausts on nice cars so much. It's the Novas and Corsas with 1 litre engines belting out more noise than a GT-R and more pops than an Evo III! They clearly enjoy it though, so I've got no complaints - just wouldn't have it on my own car. Although if I did have an Impreza, I would want the ground to shake as I rolled up

And my little 2.0 makes plenty of noise! You rev it to 6,500, lean out and get your ear as close to the engine as possible :P

Hi StigJ, Please do let us know how you get on with this.... would be very interested in what this sounds like.... and whether you believe it is worth the outlay. Have just checked the AFE website & the quality seems to be very good.
