What is wrong with people?

Regardless of someones upbringing it doesn't give them the right to abuse others property, common sense should tell them that... these people are just pathetic.

It's not the kids fault. I really mean that. I really feel very strongly that it is first and foremost the parents fault. I look to history for the answer. While there has always been a certain level of crime. It really started to take an uptick amongst the younger folks about the same time as the anti-establishment types came to the fore in the 60's. No mater what one thinks of the new found freedom the ladies found starting in the 60's. The hard facts are that the ladies were instrumental in instilling moral character to the kids. When both parents sought to have a career along with kids. It was the kids upbringing that suffered the most. Kids are now spending more time with strangers at daycare or the telly than with their birth parents. Of course the parents feel guilty and shower the kids with "things". Rather than their time.

Then there is the government. They (the government) just can't pass up a good opportunity to indoctrinate a new class of dependent minions. So they pass laws that one can't raise their voice to their kids. One can't give a firm swat or hand slap to redirect the kids attention away from misbehaving without fear of going to jail. Kids are much smarter than we give them credit for. They learn that their actions will have very few consequences. And even if they do. So what. They know that the government will just write a check so they can "get by".

Now before the ladies gang up on me. I have no issues what so ever with "women's lib" in general. I just think that if one chooses a career. They should think long and hard about not bringing kids into this world. Then hand them over to hired help. I think at least one parent should be at home to raise the life they created. Whether it's the wife or the husband is for each couple to decide. These aren't pets. They are humans that we create and their upbringing is a serious matter.

OK fire away. As bigdog puts on his Nomex suit.

Down my friends road in nottingham (which is actually a nice posh area) some kids went around and keyed PIG into half a dozen cars... the company pool car being one!

Police came around and said this has been happening all over different estates, caught on camera, but as they are underage its quite difficult to even give them a decent punishment as a deterrent, most of the kids being in foster care, and juvenile detention is more of a play ground.

I'm sorry but I don't agree.
Two of my kids, boys, I stayed at home when they were little and the youngest I didn't.
None of them would ever do anything like this.

It's nothing to do with whether a mother works or not, it's how the child is brought up. Of course, I agree that it's best that the mother (or father) should be at home but its not the reason for the anti sociable behaviour we see all the time if they work.

My kids knew if they had ever done anything they would have gotten their arses kicked from here to kingdom come. They were brought up to know right from wrong and respect other people and their property.

Lack of respect for others' property is one of my biggest hates.

Too many people don't understand these:
- Discipline, and an understanding that all actions have repercussions.
- Rights are exactly that, rights - not privileges.
- Nothing in this life is instant gratification - you work hard to get something. Those that don't are exceptions.

Annoys me when you see kids on something like X-Factor saying 'this is my only chance'.
No - you happen to have this chance. If it doesn't work out, and you REALLY want it, you'll keep trying.

I genuinely believe the drop in moral fibre of the youth of this country could be (partly) resolved by removing 'celebrity' culture, reintroducing discipline (fixed term in the army post school would be a start) and the state being firmer with people.

However, there's never an easy fix...
...perhaps just send anyone that tucks their tracksuit into their socks off to Australia?

Carol. It's the trend that I speak of. Nothing is 100% sure save death and taxes. You apparently were able to spend enough time to instill your values in them. And I Imagine the older ones were able to tell the youngest of the impending doom should the youngest stray to far. I just see far to many folk neglecting their parental responsibilities. And then think nothing of shooting out yet another puppy and proceed to ignore them as well while they reach for the next rung of the corporate ladder. I was raised from 10 years on by my Mom. But before my parents went separate ways. My Mom was at home. I knew it was near impossible to get away with anything. And so I'm proud to say that I wasn't a hand full as a teen for my poor working Mom.

I think the problem is bigger - our youths and us are the audience to how the world leaders celebrities and politicians behave - morally destitute, adding nothing to society and only ever taking. When they get caught out there is no accountability - no ownership. We can have wars, murder and theft and a global scale and no one is accountable. Its hardly surprising really that the young have no moral compass - there is no north - magnetic or otherwise, no compass, and no one else following one.

To Ruby's comment, with no youth clubs and frequently both parents having to work to make ends meet they get no guidance. It's no excuse for this type of behaviour but it doesn't help.

Yes but a lot of you all forget the children that are born into homes of criminals and drug takers for example, or those that may have been severly abused. They have not been nurtured or cared for and are likely psychologically scarred, angry and damaged as a result. Can you really think that they have the best judgement?

Everyone here forgets that part of society and these unfortunate young people. Most of us on here with the cars that we own may probably live quite comfortable lives and yes can think that its just its poor parenting, career women, nannies blah blah, .. some of these people I am referring to have raised themselves in very dysfunctional households. Cut them some slack...I'm not condoing their actions but just adding in that you should think about what may have driven these people to do what they do. At the end of the day they didn't kill anyone, they damaged a material object..a car.

Agree with everything you say Ruby, but letting them away with it or sitting them down and trying to talk to them has been tried and consistently fails, in turn the victims of their crimes are let down by the namby pamby judicial system.
My mate is a social worker and works with neglected teens, he is constantly having to try to get them to behave in a sociable manner, and after 20 odd years in the job even he says that there are those that just need locking up and the key thrown away as they respond to nothing.
I have often told him that if they had their pants pulled down and giving a good birching infront of all their mates then this would be more of a deterrent than "so tell me, why did your parent, gaurdian, whatever do to you to make you act like a complete and utter arsehole"
No matter how you have been brought up, inside you know whats wrong and what is right.
If someones dad is a robber and then monkey see monkey do, are we going to lock the dad up for the crimes committed by the child.

Well said. Couldn't agree more.
While we feel sorry for these neglected/abused kids and the sort of childhood they've had, they know what they are doing is wrong.

There is no sufficient deterrent in this country any more. Counselling and hand slapping only works on the minority it seems.

When we were young we used to be scared of the coppers but a lot of kids these days have no respect for authority and no fear of retribution.

I know if I went outside my front door and my car had been damaged, the last thing I would be saying is it may have been done by deprived teenagers, lets give them some counselling and show them some love.

One of the problems is that people who behave like this have no concept of consequences - they live day to day, hand to mouth and get a vicarious thrill from doing something destructive... Then in their heads they move on and would probably struggle to remember what they did last week. They have nothing to look forward to in life in general, and don't even think of the pain, stress and expense caused by their actions because that sort of consideration doesn't feature in their world. So. I get what Ruby is saying. But Nosa is also right in that instinct tells you what is right or wrong, no matter what your background, unless you truly are wired up wrong in the head as a small majority are.

Complex and confusing issue as the contributing factors are almost limitless, however i think the threat of real, meaningful punishment is the only treatment if parents and social situation fail them - sorry, harsh, but true. These people need to be treated like the children they act like, and a fundamental tenet of parenting young children is the repetitive punishment/reward cycle that instils a sense of right and wrong. And by punishment I don't mean physical measures. Though a good hard smack did wonders for me as a kid...

Precisely what I mean though, having had traumatic exposures as a young person - for no fault of their own, can have a significant impact on "wiring".

These kids who have experienced 'trauma' and had their heads potentially messed up because of it still know what they are doing is unlawful and wrong.
If they didn't realise this then they would be out doing it blatantly in broad daylight. They don't because they know they shouldn't be doing it.
I know prospects are bleak for a lot of youngsters these days and they feel hopeless but violence and criminal damage is inexcusable.
Again, there is no fear of retribution and no respect.
No fear of parents, teachers, police or adults in general breeds this behaviour.

Only point of your statement I disagree with sweetums, I would say "No Respect for teachers, police or adults in general breeds this behaviour."

Wtf? 'Sweetums'

I use the word fear relating to fear of retribution. Didn't mean fear as in they should be scared of people. Snuggles.
