What have you done to your E89 today

IMG_4338.jpegIMG_4337.jpegIMG_4339.jpegIMG_2429.jpegIMG_4287.jpegIMG_4288.jpeg

A minor first world issue I’ve finally turned my attention to..so far..unsuccessfully..

All E89s should drop their roof on the key fob…mine doesn’t…

Cars like mine with Comfort Access option should be able to close the roof on the fob..mine does.

Roof opens ok on internal cabin switches.

Now spent two pretty full days trying to troubleshoot it..

No fault codes no other issues all sensors check out ok, re-flashed the roof module ..zippo..

So we suspect it may be the roof module in some way..

Second hand one arrived..in good condition..next step…

Mine opens using the key fob but doesn't close it

Do you have a smart top fitted?
If you do have you tried disconnecting it?
I'm sure I've read that some can go wrong creating problems.

Have you got the details ?
I bought an antiglare screen protector for a 10" tablet on ebay then cut it to fit screen size in car (approx 1mm smaller all round). Cleaned screen and removed dust then fitted antiglare with the help of some soapy water, used bank card to squeegee out air bubbles. Not perfect but 100x better than damaged oe coating.

No..there’s no need if you have the factory comfort access option which this car has..

Not sure if it’s been mentioned before but have you checked all the settings/adaptions with NCSExpert?
Perhaps one has been unticked.

we've been through everything and in the end did a factory recode to reset the CTM..so the unit is on stock settings as it came out of the factory..it used to work...still have a sneaky suspicion that the comfort access door handles have something to do with it..will swap the CTM soon..

Well put the ‘new’ CTM module in…no change ..Claude and I are going to look at the FRM tomorrow..

I’m sure you have a new battery, or have tested voltage?

I've not gone back through your log of the process, but it doesn't work if it has a bad battery.

AGM battery fully charged maintains 12.4 v under full load for hours , sitting at 14.4V on charger when trying to operate..happily closes roof no issue..

I will check SoC tomorrow

Spare trim stripage with a cup of tea on a Sunday morning.
I'm replacing the ashtray for the non smokers option from BMW
Need to decide what finish to go for now

So another day of endlessly coding / unplugging / coding and re plugging modules ..

Had the comfort access module unplugged

Lots of data monitoring

Zippo change although in theory excluded dozens of items…

So in to a new world of pain / learning curve ….

It looks like the ID4Motion digital instrument cluster and/or the Mr 12 Volt MMI box are ‘shitting’ on the CAN databus which connects almost all of the 30+ modules that sit in an E89…

The primary belief at this stage is that, having spent now 5 days and over 20 hours in the car, not to mention another 20 hours doing desk research and having unplugged / reprogrammed multiple modules and buying a second CTM roof module that either or both the Gen3 MMI Mr 12 Volt box and/or the ID4Motion digital cluster are not playing nicely…various other obscure bugs like the CIC has certain amusing details like an average speed of 245 mph plus other config / inaccurate readings.

So into a new world for me..

CAN bus sniffing and subsequent analysis…

These probes and USB to PC unit plus pc software should allow me to grab / see data frames off the CAN bus network and see who is mis behaving ..if at all..

For some folks the words systems integration strike a chord…

In this case the systems integration test didn’t work…discovered the hard way that 245/40 19 and 285/35 19 are a bridge too far with non stock suspension / brakes ..

Opening up my own tyre garage now..IMG_2449.jpegIMG_2432.jpegIMG_2433.jpegIMG_2434.jpeg

Pretty intense diagnostic. Let’s hope it produces some lasting fruit

@B21 Pete, before getting too carried away with sniffing out the canbus (not fun, believe me I’ve been there on the e86) can’t you unplug your new dash and reinstall your old one, seeing if that’s indeed the culprit? I’d be doing that before getting too far down the rabbit hole. Edit, by the way, what app is that on your phone that shows you the condition of the hall/micro switches of the roof?

Although logical the problem is the id4motion connector is buried deep in the dash..you missed the installation but it was the mother of all nightmares so it’s a 10-12 hour journey to do that…so it’s a winter job if it comes to that ..should have thought that one through better..

The app is Protool it’s the best app based bmw tool by a long way..runs only on android 64 though..

For no good reason other than looks, I’ve decided to purchase all the parts to do the 340mm brake upgrade. Pad retaining clips and pins also purchased but out of screen shot 🙂.

I went for ABS branded calipers, as they proclaim to be refurbished OEM Brembo units, rather than being re-cast to questionable quality.
