Oil and Filter change. My first ever one that I have done on my own. Every day is a school day

I drove the DragonLoop (on Pistonheads forum). My wife and I had an excellent time driving this whole loop in two days (well I had more fun than she did) last Sunday /Monday. An experience I will never forget.

I would have enjoyed it in our 134 hp Subaru Legacy or our E39 525i, but am fortunate to have a manual BMW Z4 3.0, so two days of warm sunshine and the roof down made the trip so much more memorable.

I had to drive 4 hours to get to Crossgates (and 4 back home again the following day) , but it was worth it to enjoy stunning scenery, incredible, smooth, challenging roads and hardly any traffic. We stayed in North Anglesey which was peaceful but difficult to find a meal Sunday evening, and probably added an unnecessary two hours to the route. Someone recommended Capel Curig to Pen Y Pass, which we were pleased to drive twice and have three low flying fighter jets shock us.

I didn't trouble the 60mph cameras but may well have added a few points to my clean licence unable to keep below the limit in the numerous 20mph zones.

There have been many times since buying this Z4 that I have regretted it as the suspension has been too harsh for me. Well after 600 miles around Wales, the car was a delight to drive, only when I returned to Devon did the roads get potholed and uneven! That was when I realised it's not my car I hate sometimes!

After a few days in Snowdonia with our dogs last Summer we said this would be our last visit to God's own country for a few years, but we may return sooner......

So with the apparent cessation of manufacturing of id4 motion clusters and the less than impossible prospect of no more support I saw this unit come up for sale..never installed (can’t think why👀🧐😂🙈)….ive bought it and the helpful staff at id4motion sold me a virginise s/w patch AND gave me FOC a patch to allow all my existing purchases..themes, blind spot, boost etc to be transferable to this new cluster if I ever need it..

Building my spares pool for an end of the world apocalypse…

Refurbed an old idrive screen and a backup CIC head unit for my BMW Z4 E89

Fitted a set of match UP C42BMW-FRT.3 component speakers to the front doors. What a difference in sound compared to the "Harmon Kardon" AliExpress specials I had installed! As much as the Hong Kong Phooey ones were an improvement, these ones are just another step up.

Good to know an A B comparison :tumbleweed:

How did you have the cross over switches configured?

Is it just the 6 speaker head unit or via an amp?

Did you have it coded Hi-FI?

1. 0db

2. 6 speaker hu with the vibe powerbox 65.4 amp

3. Not coded to hifi.

Still lacks any major bass, so that'll be the next project.

Andy, did it affect the handling and performance of the car? Last week when I was following behind it, it took off like a scalded cat on some of them backroads:rofl:

Decent woofers on their own amp channel major impact

Yes, got my eye on a pair of audison 8" subs and a pioneer GM-D8701 amp to run them.

Had a free minute today, so I installed tweeters that I removed from the doors, into the rear speaker locations. Again, another improvement in sound :)

Imho after 4 sets of subs..676 677 Audison and Audiotec Fischer with the last with 500w rms and 320w rms that it’s a lot of effort for not much gain…pun…good quality woofers in the front on a decent amp with appropriate pass band filter has much much better results..of course you can have both ..as I have done twice ..but for my music profile almost a complete waste of time and money..

Think I'd be better having a face to face with you, lol. Either that, or just be content with what I've got. Tbf, it's night and day compared to what it was with just the council spec hu, just not as much bass as I'd like.

I find it’s difficult to get good bass because when the top is down the wind noise / road roar clash intensity and frequency wise in those areas…if I play the system in the garage with engine off its ’banging’ I believe is the term..

With the Match series DSPs you can use Director or Conductor to have real time changes to the sound stage by selecting different profiles using various bass enhancing techniques and /or just boosting bass frequencies in either simple or clever ways..the conclusion is always the same ..you can have way too much bass stationary or moving slowly rood up..but roof down or at speed exterior noise swamps the bass response..the subs are really bad as they get overwhelmed by rear wheel noise through the arches / rear fire wall…the woofers don’t suffer as bad..

Right, so maybe better to look for some decent 6" subs for the footwells and run those from a separate amp, rather than going to the trouble of fitting rear subs?

Best to get a decent woofer ..that will extend into most sub territory with more volume and aldo you really need a decent woofer as they 100mm mid range deliver f**k all bass
