Combination of last night and this morning, but I removed my rear lights to de-crud the gaskets, silicone sealed the outer shells (got water bubbles getting in when I pressure wash it- more to follow on that!) so they have a bit better a chance at continued life and re-fit them properly as it turned out they weren't actually fit properly.

The gaskets needed a good long soak in Fairly liquid and a bloody good scrubbing, layers and layers of hardened muck in the crevices!

Some horror shots:

What’s that screw doing holding the light cluster?

So, through this process it became apparent that cluster has been replaced at some point in it's past with one from mid-2013 (7191776-11), whereas my car is an early 2010 (other cluster is a 7191775-07) which explained why when I renewed some bulbs previously, there was a W16W where the other side had a H21W - weird change to make but whatever.

The -11 is new enough to be missing the third stud/nut combo (but isn't new enough to have the gasket with the screws, which I think was introduced with the -12) and it seems that a previous owner/garage tackled that newly introduced water ingress point by sticking a self-tapper where the nut would have gone šŸ˜…

I84Q1b7.jpg

I stuck it back in for now after cleaning the screw up a bit but plan is to clean up the rust it's left behind (hoping it's not gone through the paint!) and apply a more appropriate (TBD- was thinking just some electrical tape) barrier in it's place in the near future

7 litres of full ester based synthetic Fuchs oil with a nice Mahle oil filter..checked the existing filter for particles..none…sent oil of for analysis..

Version 3 of the rear brake caliper adaptor for the 370mm rear disc conversion using a standard F series 5 caliper…

After discussions with a brake caliper bracket guru thickened the bracket from 12mm to 15mm in S355 steel…..

This will allow me to machine a mm or so off this bracket to allow it to bolt the caliper cradle up without having to use any spacer washers..plus..

This version allow for the 370mm version to machine the caliper cradle without having to machine out the entire gap between the front and rear mounts

 Changed the old worn Silver Carbon look to a Black Carbon trim, I think it looks so much better with the red. Thanks to M-Tech in Sheffield, highly recommend :driving:

So treated myself to a couple of digital torque wrenches

Checked all my brake nuts and bolts ..after my ā€˜incident’

One knuckle to adapter bolt would turn at 95 nm against a torque request of 108nm so took it apart and rebolted up with fresh blue loctite

Apart from that all bolts were at the set torque figure with no signs of movement / fretting etc

Interesting using those wrenches as they provide various audible and visual clues to what’s going on…you can literally hear what’s going on with the beeps etc..very impressive..

Everyday is a school day

I think fairly rare and also manual 35i.
Yes, it’s a damn nice looking car and very fast but I can’t justify keeping it and my Mercedes SL. So, one has to go I think. :(

You need to sell your Mercedes then!

There’s a strong argument for that but
1) R230 prices are so low and mine has only 45K miles on the clock (mine since 29k) that it’s hardly worth selling
2) It’s a much better long distance car than the E89. I have driven it all the way down to Spain and all the up to Scandinavia twice
3) It ā€˜feels’ a more expensive car

Against that
1) It is a much less exciting car to drive.

That said…..you may have a point!

For really long distance trips abroad, I now only use my F07 530d GT. So maybe I should keep the E89 and sell the Merc? šŸ¤”

Or just say ā€œsod it! I don’t need to sell them….I’ll just keep both and enjoy them!ā€

Maybe after all these years, I have the perfect collection of cars for me? An unimpeachable classic in the E31 840Ci sport with only 27k miles on it.
The Merc SL for Continental summer trips.
The 530D GT as the best for everything in the ā€˜real’ world.
And, the E89 35i manual as the best ā€˜fun’ ?

1st drive of the season with mine -- and cleared all of the error codes from my winter hydraulic top refurb.

Good day to remember why I like this ride.

Well I did say it a bit tongue in cheek, but you do have two 2 seaters with a folding metal roof!

But if space and costs aren't an issue why not keep them all? Although the amount of use the 2 seaters get may be a factor.

There aren't too many manual 35i models around so you want to avoid getting seller's regret!

All E89s had a neutral gray/aluminium type finish to all calipers
