What have you done to your car today?

Passenger window wouldn’t go up or down, so stripped the door apart to investigate. I’m no mechanic, but I think I found the issue - see pics :lol: Window regulator cable appears rusted through and although there’s no sign of water ingress, the door membranes have obviously been off before and stuck back with a combination of duct tape and what appeared to be decorators caulk :roll: Lots of scraping later and I was left with tonnes of sticky gunk, however auto-finesse tar and glue remover turned out to be my saviour. That stuff is magic and cleaned them up like new! Checked drivers side too and regulator seems fine, but membrane was last off in Roman times it appears as it was a mosaic, stuck on in about 20 different pieces.

2 new door membranes on order from BMW - £40.01 each. Ouch. Also noted a few broken doorcard clips, so new ones are also on order. Butyl tape arriving from amazon tomorrow to properly fix them down. While doorcards and membranes were off I decided to apply sound deadening to the door skins (inspired by a post on here and also Rob (Usel) who is always a bad influence when it comes to mods ). I can confirm the ‘satisfying clunk test’ and overall feels much more solid when closing the door. Passenger door will follow once I get my hands on the new regulator as I figured it would be easier to apply with the regulator out, once I come to swap them.

For future reference for anyone else looking for new membranes: eBay BMW store does them £38 each and free postage.

[ref]SqerrNipz[/ref], hope the butyl tape works ok for you? I find it lifts away along the bottom edge, about 6 inches from the front where the metal kinks in.
On the recommendation of [ref]bigwinn[/ref] I now use Tec7 black sealant. Works a treat.

I’ve been robbed! :lol: Thanks for the heads-up, I find it a minefield with Z4 parts. People asking £75 each for door membranes on ebay. I always check BMW main dealer first now.

I’ve not put the membranes back yet, so might look at some of that sealant instead if you think it works better? I want to do it all properly to prevent any future issues…

I’ve not put the membranes back yet, so might look at some of that sealant instead if you think it works better? I want to do it all properly to prevent any future issues…

Replaced the broken 3rd brake light yesterday, and discovered the car has an automatic roof unit fitted today… which was a nice surprise

Easy enough just spicing in 5 wires the instructions are pretty well written and easy to follow. The only thing I did different is to unplug the battery as I was going to cut the cables and not use the supplied taps. Probably could have made my install neater and used butt crimps but I wanted to make it reversible so at least with the bullet connectors it can be removed and the wires reconnected easily.

The fit is ok/good - not perfect, but acceptable, very acceptable factoring in the price. Completely watertight

Finally ready to let the M roadster go. Though driving it top down on days like today has me wondering if I’ll later regret it. But in any case, I spent the day detailing it in anticipation of listing it. Perhaps a new owner may be able to enjoy the car more than I have (11,000 miles in 5 years). If anyone’s interested, car is located in CT, USA. Accident free history, no lien, clean title in hand.

PS - I will be swapping over to mint set of Style 32 wheels next week. Original 224s will be included in sale as well.

At last after wife bought the kit for me last Christmas I have worked up the courage to use it on my headlights. Had a go on the breakers practice light she bought me first. Very happy with the results, makes the front look much nicer now.

With one bulb broken, I figured I’d upgrade both of them to a set of Osram LED’s I had kicking about for ages. Increased output for sure, and the old halogen also highlights the wear in the projector itself. Something I’ll rectify this winter when I build up a set of HID-LED combination headlights. For those wondering: the LED’s fitted are Osram LEDriving HL Gen. 2’s

First test tonight, but cutoff looks crisp and clean under daylight conditions up against a wall
