What can you do about it

Perhaps a little more subtle as I would not go for the deliberate direct damage route …

"Hello police? I am sure there were guns in that RR, and some bags of drugs"

That is probably the best thing to do! It's not worth a confrontation or possible harm to yourself! But being stopped by the police would surly annoy!! Call up and say you suspect the car of drugs trafficking

Accidentally walk past whilst holding a set of keys in your hand the next time you see it.

He's obviously a cock so deserves to be treated like one.

I've 'heard' of that happening when someone returned to the parking lot to discover a new dent and a car parked rediculously close to my ..his car.
But taking action does have it's consequences. I'm not talking karma either.

My life lesson ...Hope I can get it in within 2 volumes ..
Parked in a Mall in East Lansing Michigan.
Wife and I were returning home in our new Ford Mustang.
Come out to leave and discover another car parked very close and a new dent / paint chip where there door swung.
I see red and decide to wait ...
Two women approach and enter the car. The driver squeezes in oblivious to me. She even made contact with my door again.
I say something like ..Lady - You dented my door !
She is in her seat balancing her coffee and fumbling to get her car started ..She scowls at me and says "So What" as if this is just common parking lot behaviour.
I respond to her ..."Well if you don't give a sh*t ..I guess I don't give a sh*t either. "
I open my door and giver her car a solid whack with it.
Suddenly she gets excited and tells her passenger to get a cop (No cell phones back then)
The passenger gets out and seeing my plate is from Canada ..Gives me a predictable cursing before disappearing into the Mall..

Now Im standing next to her car and while she was trying to get out ..I could see her plan for her coffee and decided to just stand innocently by her door.
Her anger disappears quickly when she realizes that she is now alone next to all 6' 1'' and 235lbs of me towering over her window ...

Im not really interested in waiting for the cops ...Rather continue my journey making a run for the border...
Told the wife to scramble over the console and start the car ...I squeezed into the passenger seat and away we went ...

Life Lesson learned .... Well id did feel good to whack her door, but all in all not worth the potential aggravation.
Better I learned it in a parking lot. During my Biking days I always imagined putting the boots to any wayward drivers door who wanted to occupy my space...
Now I understand that would not have ended well either.

That's my tale ...

Carry a battery powered drill in the car and hope you bump into him again.Quietly drill a nice hole in each side wall of all 4 tyres   .
Should cost a pretty penny to replace all the tyres on a RR  and the cost of recovering the vehicle.

Sorry to hear about this PVR there are some proper Cod Heads out there

Dav - spot on straight definition of Criminal Damage. The problem is is proving reckless, as opposed to a momentary lapse in concentration (letting the door go by accident). This defence is often used in mitigation by person(S) in Road Traffic Accidents.

He may well deny doing it if confronted again, & without any independent witnesses ( I take it it no-one else witnessed the incident) to corroborate this, the clown will more than likely get away based on your word against his.

Irrespective the Police now have a duty to record a crime Of Criminal Damage if you wish to report it. (It should be allocated to a local officer to investigate it) which they should, seeing as you have a registration number of the other vehicle involved.

At the very least the a Police Officer will have to speak to the Registered Keeper of the car, bearing in mind this may well not have been the driver.
It may well be the driver resides outside the Force area which will necessitate a Foreign Force Enquiry.
This involves details of the incident being passed to the force the person lives and allocated to an officer from that force.

The investigating Officer will have to take statements from both of you to assist in identifying the individual you spoke to.

Once the officer has collected all the available information, a file MIGHT be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for a decision on whether to proceed with a criminal charge.

Unfortunately, in my experience this would be unlikely, the CPS could not prosecute the devil, & only consider proceeding if the evidence is overwhelming and there is, in their words "The matter is in the public interest AND their is a realistic chance of a conviction"

CPS prosecution/conviction ratios are really important to them, so they don't often take risks.

Would love it if Karma did work, but it seems to be very selective in that matter :)

Well, for one thing, you can tell your son that all the members on this forum think the guy is an ar*e.
Might not count for much but at least he'll see that it tells folk more about the other guy than it does about him.

As for all the 'advice' from others - well I'm pretty certain that deliberate action like that suggested might at least escalate the situation and at worse might lead to police action against your son - not 'reasonable under the circumstances'. So his not reacting is the right choice. . . this isn't life threatening and not worth an escalation.

Your son might have asked to exchange insurance details. . . .? Then, unless the person's going to be totally onside (such an incident cost me £200 when a gale caught my door in a staff car park and I agreed to make good) then both sides will lose and that's possible where such an attitude begins. . . not right but such is the insurance business - and - you've heard that the police route is probably not useful as well. . . .

How many of us have returned to the car to find damage like this and never known who or what did it? It's all the same - folk not bothered or wanting to avoid the expense.

Another way to consider it is that it's like a puncture - you never want one but occasionally you end up having to deal with the hassle and unpleasant inconvenience. Just like this guy - you never know when you're going to come across such a person - someone you'd rather not have to deal with - unpleasant inconvenience that doesn't seem fair, costs money and hassle - but don't let it (or him) mess up your life, get the damage sorted and put it behind you as that's life, not fair but in the scheme of things - guys like this are not worth bothering with - put your energies into something else more constructive.

It tells you more about them than it does about you. . . .

A utility knife is less obtrusive.
Sidewall slash on 2 or more tires works.
Lopping off the valve stems or just a slice at the base works too.

Hopefully not on Run Flat Tires.
Damn Run Flats

Pre-printed A3 sheets with the word 'C#NT' printed on it. Can of Photomount. Spray, place on windscreen or rear tailgate glass; all in a few seconds. Watch him try to peel to off for hours.

Or these stick on numberplates...

Be careful with keying his car - he may have your number and come back at you. He seems to be familiar with this kind of territory.

My god there's some urban warriors on this forum. . .

We don't live in a DVD world and sometimes we don't get payback. This can also be a dangerous game to play - when does it end and for what?

Make certain you can play your role in such escalation and is it really going to benefit you to behave in a way that might lead to possible prosecution and at worst upset and damage to you and yours - for what - some Neanderthal who has no social awareness, manners or care?

Macho posturing and talk might make someone feel better but it might also encourage them to break the law and get into trouble. Like I said in my earlier post, it's like getting a puncture - you come across folk like this from time to time. They are irritating, a pain and inconvenient but just get things put right and move on. The alternative is just not worth the possible outcome.

Don't encourage others to take actions they might regret or that might be costly - for what? "A mans got to do what a mans got to do?" Stop encouraging foolishness and let's remember the vast majority of folk we come across ARE reasonable and even generous - look at the folk we meet on the forum . . .

It's not worth getting up-set over someone like this ar*e.

It is a bit of a voodoo doll exercise to me :)

Rubbish!!

Come on, take action. Fight back and demand vengeance. It's what Mel Gibson would have done

And who really cares if it's all talk anyway. Don't you realise that talking things through can sometimes work wonders for the soul? Just don't sit back, shrug and accept these things. You will be truly lost.

Sorry to hear this :( I know the car park in question but never had any issues there.

I have had something similar though

1. Parked my car on the end of a row
2. Went shopping
3. Came back to find a huge dent in the side of the car

fortunately for me the guy was honest and waited for me to come back. He just paid for the lot without having to involve insurance companies, so there are nice guys out there.

Turns out the trolley he had used for his shopping after being unloaded had er... rolled down the slight slope into the side of our car...

He drove a range rover too...

So bloody annoying.

I've come back to my car on a few occasions over the years and whenever I've seen a door has hit mine (and you know from the paint colour) I make sure I give them double the dent back as I open my door.

The cocky git that your son encountered deserves a slap :x
