Well this should be a fun experience...

Although 14 valves need adjusted it could be less than 14 they need to buy.
They may be able to reuse a shim from one valve in another to get the correct gap.

Inspection 1 was doing about 500 miles before you got it with no shims required, so all damage done by you :poke:

Do they check that at an I1 then...? I thought it was only at I2 and that was why it was so much more expensive :?

yes they are checked (or at least it's part of the job list) for both inspection I and II. The difference between a II and I is that both gearbox and diff oil are changed on a II.

Main dealer price for an inspection I is £669 and a II is £899, the diff oil alone is about £100 for an M, made of unicorn piss it would seem!

Yes should be done at inspection 1. The additional cost is for gearbox oil and diff oils etc.

Bing, my Indy charges £4 a shim I think and they get them individually from BMW I believe, and they only use new if any need changing. They don't reuse or swap.

Mine had a few done at my last inspection, which I had at about 42K I think. Cost for Insp 2 was £595 I think + shims, but my bill was a lot more as I also had coolant change, brake fluid change and alignment done.

New spark plugs are inspection 2 as well right? As said shims are about £3-4 each, no biggie :)

And they will throw away the BMC filter unless you have asked them not to replace it :poke:

That's really cheap - including VAT ? Hope mine is around that...

Yep, £595 inc Vat, parts and labour, exc Shims for the Inp 2. The bill was £900 ish with everything else though if I remember correctly. It was roughly a year ago I think. Was done around 42K and im not over 50K somewhere!

well bing mine goes tomorrow ... will be leaving @ 6am to hit their for 8ish :-) my cost is 767 all in minus the spark plugs as i have new cooler plugs in the car already. i forget to reduce the air filter cost off as this can't be used in my case anyway, i run a different setup related to the s/c unit.

may drive roof off all the way but it may be too dodgy weather wise....

14 shims........... Really!

I have never seen one need that many.

Can you ask if they are loose or tight ?

What is motor plan ?

In South Africa you get a 5 year/100k km warranty from the dealer when buying a new BMW.
It covers everything except fuel and tyres.
You can extend it to up to 7 years, I'm on my last year.

You probably have the same/similar warranty with a different name?

Oh and they just ordered new brake discs/pads as well

So it's back, running very nicely. Sadly they did not note the tolerances, only which valves needed shims :(

They reckoned the possible reason so many needed done was that they weren't checked properly by the dealer on its Insp 1. I don't know if that's true and don't have any measurements from that service to say otherwise. Anyway, it's a lot quieter now.

The lights still aren't working properly, and I'm currently very pissed off with pvr's choice of location for the intravee in the centre chubby...I disconnected it to ensure it wasn't messing with any codes and now can't get the leads connected again. Feckin' thing, my knuckles are in agony :x

Anyhoo, they even cleaned and re-oiled my BMC filter so overall very happy. Final cost was £649 incl. VAT, roughly half and half parts and labour.
