Watchfinder.co.uk - Tag Gulf Pics Added

Thanks guys, and for your help, I love this site as you can post about anything and everything and peeps always help and advise

Will post some pics up when the Gulf arrives, its only taken me 18 months to get one, the plan was on my 50th last January

Re import tax, I'm assuming if you buy within the EU then you don't pay any tax etc, from the USA you definitely will as been stung before, the far east I've found a mixed bag, from China I didn't pay import duty but from Taiwan I did :?

I found watchfinder to be excellent. I sold them my Jaeger Le-Coultre Master Hometime for a very good price (more than I bought it for) and then bought a pristine Rolex Milgauss GV for a very good price. I could move it on privately for the same if not a bit more than I bought it for.

Excellent company to deal with and they are always open to negotiation.

Also, don't discount buying from abroad. I bought my Tudor Black Bay from a dealer in Italy and saved £600 on UK dealer prices. Just research the dealer fully and make sure you have a lengthy chat with them. I suggest you join www.tz-uk.com as there is loads of advice on this. Beware though, when you have enough posts to access the sales corner, your wallet nor bank account will ever be the same again!

Thanks for the info :) , I can second that, it's been a pleasurable experience buying from Watchfinder. They gave me slightly more than what I asked for my trade in subject to inspection, but honoured the trade in price before they received my watch today. Got a call from them today to say they would ship the Tag Gulf today for Friday delivery but asked if they would do a Saturday delivery instead which they were happy to do. Its all be a very smooth purchase up to now.

Think I will join tz-uk, I've been a casual browser on there from time to time.

Hi all,

Received the Tag Monaco Gulf today from Watchfinder so here are some piccies :) Have to say I'm bowled over by this watch and 100% pleased with its condition which is as new, in fact I don't think its hardly been worn at all. 100% pleased with Watchfinder too who offered a decent trade in for my Carerra without seeing the watch and honoured their trade in price after they received it. The whole experience with them was smooth and professional so can thoroughly recommend them if your in the market for a new timepiece. I do think some of their watches are priced at the higher end but I think this reflects condition and they are open to negotiation.

This Gulf is number 1475 from a run of 2500. It came well packaged and in a Watchfinder soft drawstring pouch which I thought was a nice touch. The original bill of sale was also included from May 2010 for 3050 Euros and was originally sold in Italy. The watch comes with Watchfinders own 12 months Warranty.

Was sorry to see the Carerra go but after searching for over 12 months for a decent Gulf example I'm a happy bunny with this one :)

Cheers,

Tim.

Nice Tim! Did you part exchange? I nearly bought a Monaco last month but resisted as I have a Carrera Calibre 6 that I don't wear much as I don't want to get it damaged. I've just filled in the details to see how much they will offer me as px.

Thanks Steve, yes I part exed the Carerra against the Gulf. On the Watchfinders form they ask what price you want for your watch so I pitched it at £1700 to be realistic, this is what I had it on ebay for but didn't sell. Blowers who are another second hand watch dealer only offered me £1200 but were selling day/date Carerras on their site for £2400 to £2600 :o

Watchfinder came back to me with an offer of £1600 to £1800 subject to inspection of my Carerra, however when I called back to say I definitely wanted the Gulf they offered me £1800 without seeing the Carerra so was quite pleased with that. The Gulf was overpriced though at £3995 but as I was part exing just thought what the hell I've been looking for a Mint Gulf for ages and felt I would never get one so just went for it.

Yeh I stuck a grand in for mine where they ask you how much you want but wasn't really sure what to put. I bought mine for £1,500 4 years ago, got staff discount through a mate from goldsmiths so would have been £2k ish normally. Watchfinders have an unworn Monaco that I want for £1950 at the mo, nearly paid £2500 last month for one, glad I didn't now.

Nice Tag to own although not my style
I like the negotiating up on price RE the Px deal
Tbf to WF they offered me £25 more than i originally paid for my Breitling but its still £3500 on top to get the Milgauss i desire so i think a period of contemplation , lust & saving will ensue , maybe my 50th in 2 years will be a good excuse to "twist"

The watch is lovely, really lovely. I'm always nervous with a square shape of catching it more given it's profile on the wrist. Always like the gulf watches, even at the bottom end of the tags, just something emotive about the colours.

However not a fan of watch winders, the days of oils drying up on unused watches are long gone. You wouldn't leave a car running 24/7 just so it's ready when you wanted it....not my phrase, but one that a watch smith shared with me.

Go for it Steve  lifes too short, I passed up a brand new Gulf albeight from an Italian Tag AD around 2 years ago which was alot cheaper than what I just bought but passed on it  as was jittery about buying from abroad. Ended up getting the blue faced Steve McQueen Monaco but sold it so I could afford the Carerra. Now I've sold it come full circle

Cheers, I just like the whole design of the Gulf and a great looking classic watch, may swap out the band for a black one with Orange or Red stiching, something to ponder.

I'm unsure on the use of watch winders as well, whether a good or bad idea. Its just a bit of a pain with Auto watches when setting the time and date as you have to be careful when you do it i.e. not during the date cycle as you can knacker the mechanism, so I'm told, I think it does mention this in Tag instruction booklet. so keep the watch running. Need to find out more if a good thing to do or not :?

Time is fine to adjust whenever, it's just the date. Safe rule of thumb is whenever the hour hand is in the top half of the dial, manually move the time forwards until the date changes & you are past 3am. Then set as normal. Believe 10pm & 2am are the date witching hours where you can do damage.

Only one of my higher end ones has a date, just find it easier that way - I only ever notice the date is incorrect on the others when in a meeting, and nothing says "I'm bored of what you're saying" like taking a watch off to fiddle with the time or date :P

There are some great straps out there which mimic the dial colours. Can't remember from the top of my head but google Steveostraps for some great handmade ones that don't cost the earth.

Thanks for the advice on adjusting the date and the straps, some nice straps on the website

The blue Steve McQueen is lovely watch too, I had one of these but sold it to get the Carerra Monaco, wished I hadn't now, the face dial is lovely on them.

Update: just saw you akready dived in! Well the rule applies for the next one in your collection ;)

Tim, if you found the right watch in Italy then you should really book a return flight and take a long weekend sipping pinot and enjoying Italy with your new watch! The money you will save will mean you get a nice trip and still 500 in your pocket clear.

Every year I do the UK to Baltic drive. This year I will detour again to Zurich to stop off and look at some local watch makers. Same rules apply for rare cars as rare watches, got to make the trip! good luck!
