As far as I'm concerned the punishment perfectly fits the crime.

All diesel cars (and probably petrol too) will pollute more than the test results say they will. This is what a German magazine found with the X3 that one of the previous contributors to the thread referred to above.
What VAG have been caught doing is designing their software to recognise when it is being tested and tochange engine parameters to produce false results under those test cycles.
These are two very different things. It's not the fact that in real world conditions they produce different results to the test. It is that they have deliberately modified their software to produce fraudulent results. That's why the CEO, and soon a whole host of other VAG execs, has resigned.
