As far as I'm concerned the punishment perfectly fits the crime.

So happy that the wife got rid of hew VW Passat a couple of months back - can imagine the trade-in values will be badly hit whilst people want to get rid. Not so happy she bought another diesel.... but at least its not a VAG.

Wonder if this will have an impact on the price of diesel also? Either way although they are stinky horrible polluting things, it could be a good time to get into a diesel daily for some cheap motoring.
Looks like BMW are also being dragged into this now.

Shares German car manufacturer BMW are down nearly 10% on the Frankfurt stock exchange after a newspaper report that one of its diesel models exceeded EU emission norms. BMW shares have tumbled 9.7% to €72.05 euros after a story in the weekly Auto Bild that emissions from one of its diesel models were 11 times higher than EU norms.

Let's be clear on something:
All diesel cars (and probably petrol too) will pollute more than the test results say they will. This is what a German magazine found with the X3 that one of the previous contributors to the thread referred to above.
What VAG have been caught doing is designing their software to recognise when it is being tested and tochange engine parameters to produce false results under those test cycles.
These are two very different things. It's not the fact that in real world conditions they produce different results to the test. It is that they have deliberately modified their software to produce fraudulent results. That's why the CEO, and soon a whole host of other VAG execs, has resigned.

Somewhat like APR for borrowing.

Even on most car forums a shocking number of people are confused and think that VW have been cheating CO2 or MPG figures somehow. How many times have you read the lines "This is old news" "they are all at it" etc?
As well as VW paying for their blatant fraud. I believe there should be a review of test procedures for vehicle emissions. It's quite clear that unrealistic figures are being written into legislation due to the test models which seem to bare little resemblance to normal use meaning we are kidding ourselves on that these things are clean. Although i have to say i can't figure the US legislation at all. If it's so strict then how are all these 6l V8s allowed at all? They may have acceptable NOx figures but come on.
This wouldn't put me of buying a VW in the least and wouldn't be suprised if other manufacturers are upto shady goings on but haven't been caught until now. Personally, emissions, MPG blah blah blah come bottom for me when buying a motor, I can see from the deceipt angle but frankly I couldn't care less as the most important is the quality of the product which I still feel German motors are the best.
