VW America. Oops!!!

Basically facing billions of dollars of fines for violating US laws by designing an algorithm to recognise when a car was undergoing official emissions tests and changing parameters in order to provide false emissions results.

What a major PR disaster. What contempt for their customers.

They have currently suspended sales of Audi and VW diesels in the US.

This company is already too big and needs breaking up. This kind of behaviour reinforces why.

Thought companies had been doing this for years - making the emissions low at the revs used for measurement? :?

It's like the mpg figures - all to be taken as unlikely . . .

This is a whole different thing Paul. They've designed a different map that only activates when an official test cycle is run which changes all of the usual engine parameters.

A good piece here in Road & Track.

Perhaps this will finally kill the myth diesel is supposedly cleaner than petrol. We have been coerced to buy diesel when anyone with half an ounce of brain knows it is a filthy fuel no matter what the "experts" tell us. Clearly we now know how they were convincing those that needed convincing! Wonder if government's will revise the ridiculous tax burden/relief they put upon the allegedly cleaner fuel?
Be interesting to see how this develops but I sense big trouble ahead.

I'm not really sure why this has come to light now, I visited a testing station years ago who knew then that all engines went into a different mode when on the test cycle. Petrol and diesel. There must be dozens of similar test stations in the UK so it must have been widely known for years.

Aren't a lot of the engines from VW used in other cars - Skoda Seat etc?

I'm pretty sure we'll find out that they aren't the only company doing this - how are they overcoming the tests otherwise?

Yes the engines are common to all those brands and possibly more. Got to say great engines with oodles of torque and a real pleasure to drive but perhaps not quite as good as VW would have you believe.

Look like a min 12 Billion fine

also they have started to look at other cat manufacturers more so if they find more evidence with other VW models !
And the fact that VW have admitted it !!

Just had a look and the regulations for UK are 80mg/km where in USA it is 31mg/km but still if the figure of 10 times over the limit is correct for US cars then one would have to assume that UK cars are also affected even though VWUK is currently denying that is the case.

What happens now if they change MOT tests to measure the actual NOx levels on a proper cycle not just a test cycle, that will leave thousands of people with nice, expensive VAG diesels that are basically writeoffs come MOT time
