Virus worries

I can understand why!

How are things in the Netherlands? How are authorities dealing with it ?

In general, the authorities are dealing well with it. We're not in lockdown (yet) but schools, bars, cafe's and restaurants were ordered to close last week as well as cancellation of all sporting fixtures and reccommendations to work from home, social distancing and not using public transport, even though trains and buses are running. There was a mad rush to get the gange in at the coffeshops and the King gave quite an authoritative and morale-boosting speech. He's also in self-isolation along with his family from being at a resort where 3 people were infected.

I'm seeing a LOT of idiotic behaviour however, especially from young people who are still congregating in large groups. It doesn't seem to have sunk in properly with the younger generation I think. Probably because they can't physically see any danger and they don't know anyone who has been affected. There really needs to be a more robust response to this in my opinion as the Dutch can be very blasé about risk-taking.

I’ve just seen the bbc footage of the car parks etc in the Snowdonia Nat Park ! It’s bank holiday full!

Cretins

This afternoon whilst out at the front of our house I saw the distressing sight of one of our very near neighbours teenage daughter being taken back into hospital with COVID 19.
She was initially taken in early last week and was returned home on Thursday. Today when I saw her being put into the ambulance she looked absolutely awful, extremely pale and limp.
I think that this image will stay with me for a while. It also highlights how close it can be to all of us and how dangerous it is, particularly to the vulnerable.
The other thing that sticks in my mind was what appeared to be the poor level of PPE that the ambulance crew were wearing. After seeing over the last couple of months now hospital staff etc. around the world wearing full protective suits, masks, gloves etc. this crew only had on a flimsy looking mask, latex gloves and a rather pathetic looking plastic apron.
Stay safe everyone

Not pleasant :( but seems to highlight younger people are just as suseptible and why I think maybe schools/colleges etc should have been closed much sooner than holding out for as long as possible.

Tim.

Just been out on my mountain bike to get a little fresh air . Saw 3 teenage kids sharing a bag of crisps in one park, 2 kids playing football in another . Education starts at home , but seems their parents dont give 2 hoots.
One women driving a car , with a face mask on, pulls it down to rub her nose
Otherwise totally unreal with the silence ( other than the big bikes wanging down the A4)
I had a wonderful job of repointing a patio today................ Wife said dont rush anything or you will run out of jobs soon !
Oh and my little sister has now started eating again after 4 days with the Covid 19 infection.
I do wonder of people do 'really' understand the importance of keeping apart. I had a chat with 3 neighbours earlier and there was a respectful 2 metres between us all, so not rocket science. Still you cant educate pork..............

I suspect the reality and indeed the enormity if it all is starting to take hold to most of us - but it’s annoying to see groups of numpties out and about and seemingly without a care in the world. I suspect that because of this the country will go into a more formal and enforced lock down.
Not what I ever expected to see in my lifetime but very necessary it seems.

I've a niggling suspicion that the idiots failing to heed the government's advice are the very reason we're not already in lock down. By that I mean that I suspect the government realise the nation contains a very significant proportion of idiots whom would've flouted an early lock down. If too many of them don't adhere to it the situation would be impossible to police and could get out of hand very quickly. Perhaps by delaying it and continuing to educate the morons and the situation getting worse, the government hope that more people will actual abide by the lock down when it undoubtedly arrives. Perhaps.

Had a strange Mothers day today!

We have two grandchildren by our daughter and my granddaughter made the dinner today, they both brought it over to us and put it on the front boundary wall then rang me to say they were outside with our dinners, (Meals on Wheels) flowers and cards for the Mrs. Had a little chat with them from ten feet away and a laugh at this situation. :( Hope they can get a vaccination soon and kill this Chinese originated virus.

Yep - Chinese Virus - it originated in a dirty wild animal market in China - what else can it be called?
I don’t normally agree with the man but this time Trump hit the nail on the head - I’m certainly no racist by a long chalk but sometimes it has to be spelled out!
We still say the “Spanish Flu” but nobody jumps up and down about that!

I disagree, Ronk. Coloured people used to be called all sorts of lovely names as well, but that doesn't make it ok now, does it? I doubt 'Spanish Flu' would be labeled so if it was prevalent today.
Trump (like any populist politician) understands only too well how good it is to find a boogeyman to blame to divert attention from his own ineptitude in handling this crisis.
It may have originated in a bioweapons facility in Wuhan, but we'll likely never know - the Chinese govt is hardling likely to be forthcoming with the information.
Our entire country goes into lockdown in 48hrs to try and get the jump on this virus (we have been lucky enough to see what has happened elsewhere in the world before it gets here, and the government is trying to act early. Whether it's early enough remains to be seen). Our economy is going to be royally screwed, no-one knows how long it will take to come out the other side, or how many may contract it or die from it, so I'm happy to save the 'blame game' until the more pressing need to just get through it has passed....
Not having a go at you Ronk, just expressing another opinion.
Cheers.

At med school, we learned about the 1918 ‘flu pandemic. I’m aware of the history, but “Spanish” was never tagged onto the name by the academics and medics who taught us, even though it was used colloquially in 1918 as much as it is now.

However, if it becomes evident that the current virus is a chemical weapon that was released in error from a government laboratory in Wuhan, I’ll consider referring to it as the “Chinese fucking ‘flu”!

The "Spanish Flu" of 1918 originated in a waterbird (goose or duck) farm in the USA. Governments all round the world denied, or played down its severity to reduce panic.
Its called Spanish Flu because the Spanish media was not censored at the time and were freely reporting it.
If Trump calls COVID19 'the Chinese Flu' then he should also call Spanish Flu the 'American Flu'.

That it originated in the US is one of many theories. Others suggest China as the source, or even the UK. The Spanish called it the “French ‘flu”...

An interesting epidemiological observation is that those born during the 1918 pandemic had a 2-3 fold increased lifetime risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease when compared with those born prior to 1888 or after 1924. I wonder if we’ll see the same with the current pandemic.

One of the theories is that it started in the trenches of France during the war. I doubt anyone really knows. Probably the only place it didn’t start was Spain!

Interesting to see The Netherlands and Belgium taking a different approach, based on their own science data. Hence the border between the countries is closed now as the Belgians do not agree with the Dutch approach (from what I read, the Dutch approach is for group level infections when the Belgians are going for the delay as long as possible approach).

I suspect we will have a lock down by this weekend . Its a shame that these numb heads can't see any further than their own selfishness and stupidity.

You can't argue with stupid (or reason with it for that matter) - hold tight and watch Darwinism in action :o
