UPDATE The hand has been dealt and I'm not crying anymore!

Good luck with that. Why do you have to be in hospital so long though? Are they doing loads of tests or so?

From a work point of view, there are people that specialise in driving your car everywhere, think it is about a tenner an hour for that including the waiting time. That could work out cheaper than taxis etc and means you can continue what you are doing.

Chin up Stark, hope you get back to full speed quickly. Focus on the present and the future arrives quicker than you think. Good luck mate.

This is the sort of thing that would screw me right over, as the nature of my self-employed work involves a lot of travel.

Sometimes it's an easy/cheap train trip, but mostly I provide my own equipment so 'public transport becomes a nightmare.

Been working in London for a couple of years now and I don't think I could afford the peak time (not much choice on working hours) return tickets at about £310 a time (plus tube & bus at the London end).

I know you'll be gutted and down but just to share my experience, in the hope it might help you cope with your news a bit - I too had to declare to the DVLA and was not allowed to drive for 6 months. It was hard as I lost flying, motorcycling and driving all at once and this was the thing that caused the greatest discord between me and my wife (so watch out for that emotional impact :headbang: ) but you will get through this and out the other side: I've now been back driving for 8 years and (God-willing) will continue as long as I can, though any further instances will bring about further declarations. For me every drive might be my last now, so they are all a heightened enjoyment. Something I took for granted, has become so much more.

So hang on in there because, as some have said, time does pass (and as you get nearer the end of the 12 months it will seem to have passed more quickly) and get yourself as well as can be, follow your medical advice and then you will return to a different world but one that can still be brilliant - you'll see. . . .

Damn, can only reiterate what others have said Stark. These things are sent to test us, but the battle can be won and it's all the sweeter once your there.

Stay positive; it will happen

Very sorry to hear this Stark - very best wishes for a full & speedy recovery. Looks like some good advice in this thread.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Nick, I'm still shocked this has happened to you. It was only a couple of weeks ago we were ripping up the tarmac, blocking bus lanes, jumping red lights and some of us picking up points :o on the London meet.
Before you know it a year will have passed (it flys by as you get older) and we'll all be kicking the tyres of your newly purchased E89
