Having changed my CCV I can testify it was a ballache! The connectors will be brittle on the old one so expect them to break.
Do you have to take the manifold off on the M54? With 30% off at ECP it might be worth changing your starter while it's off to save potential faff in future.

Hoping not to have to take off intake manifold but i suspect it might have to come to that due to the cumbersome insulation on this cold climate kit....

By crikey! 3 hours later and i'm still no closer to extracting the crappy old CCV kit, let alone installing the new one.
Seeing the much smaller non-cold climate version in situ is putting the fear of god in me that i'm not going to be able to squeeze the much bulkier cold-climate one in.
Hampered by those dreaded torx bolts holding the CCV valve itself in place atm. Pondering throwing in the towel before sh!t happens.....
Mustn't grumble. Keep calm and plod on.
Going to take my JBL Flip3 bluetooth speaker out after this cuppa and crank up some Joy Division to help things along....

i always thought that being so cak-handed as i can be sometimes that they would just rip to shreds but theyre holding up pretty well. only on my 3rd pair so far today....

6.30pm, decided to call it a day.
Original valve still in place and connected to return hose and hose to air distributor. Rest of the connections freed up and hoses removed.
Tempted to hack away and cut at it to get everything out but I want to retain the valve just in case i can't get the new (bigger) one in and have to resort to re-using it.
No sign of condensate mayonnaise and hoses actually not that brittle. I would have suspected a CCV replacement had been carried out at some stage if it weren't for the fact that 2003 is stamped onto one of the hoses.
Will resume again tomorrow...

Looks even worse than mine! Lots of small connectors was what I found slow going, a days work spread over two due to getting a new starter.

There used to be a couple of yamaha mx830 amps in that hole so you couldnt see anything behind, but now theres just my littledot tube amp. Does look a tad scruffy, agreed!

Just received an email from Ekris BMW here in Utrecht. I asked them about 2 weeks ago to supply a cost estimate for all of the repairs/upgrades I'm planning to do and they came back with a figure..... Eur 2042,89

I asked them to price up the following procedures and bear in mind that the figure above doesn't include parts/procedure cost for the VANOS rebuild.
1. Replace thermostat

3. Replace oil filter housing gasket

11131437237 (oil service also required for this?)
5. Replace crankcase cover gasket

My local BMW specialist has quoted roughly half the cost for the same procedures. Bonkers!
So concluding, it's always a good idea if you're toying with the idea of getting clued-up to do things yourself / going to an indy / submitting to the stealers.

Progress update this week: not much progress.
The cold-climate ccv kit finally arrived and it was straight down to business, removing the old system.
Upon trying to fit the new but bulkier valve, due to the insulation, I found there was just no room to manouvre the tricky s-bend hose into position. So the manifold has come off in order to fit the valve and hose into position but now i have to wait for delivery of an intake manifold gasket before replacing the manifold.
So, slow progress of sorts, but progress all the same...
In other news, the back end is looking a bit tidier with the black roundel, stubby, dark window tint and more importantly; the 20mm spacers which gives the zed a more purposeful stance and removes that 'wheels inboard' look. Pics to follow later, its a bit foggy atm......
