6.08 VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
A vehicle with automatic transmission is defined in regulations as `A vehicle in which
the gear ratio between the engine and the wheels can be varied only by the use of
the accelerator or brakes'. In general a vehicle without a manual clutch is regarded
as an automatic.
It would seem strictly speaking DCT is not automatic in the eyes of the DVLA as you can indeed change gears with something other than the accelerator or brake. Although in general it is![]()

I doubt BMW would answer you as they would be concerned at litigation.jamie_z4 said:Jasey said:https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/436783/dvsa-dt1-standard-operating-procedure.pdf

So if I phone Bmw tomorrow and ask them if I can drive a DCT using my automatic only lisence.... What you think they'll tell me?
Let us know if my prediction was rightjamie_z4 said:Imma ring tomorrow if I get bored enough
The same as anyone other than a die hard will see the M badges all over the 35iS and see it as an M car.jamie_z4 said:I actually like DCT - they're an awesome box as is the ZF 8 speed in the newer f series cars
I think some people are scared of calling them 'auto' as it sounds old man-ish, but in the points I've raised previously, I think any one other than a die hard expert will still see them as an auto![]()
I have driven a V8 M3 with DCT...I purchased the three pedal manual version instead but the DCT is a great gearbox though, had a Audi TTS with the two pedal S-Tronic and got bored very quickly and have the ZF 8 speed in a 640d and I still get bored but that gearbox does seem to suit the engine though.jamie_z4 said:I actually like DCT - they're an awesome box as is the ZF 8 speed in the newer f series cars

I still class the DCT/S-Tronic and ZF6/8 all as slushboxes because to me they are a lazy gearbox because all you do is just use your right foot most of the time, but they all have a place and suit different cars...I wouldn't want a Caterham with a DCT and I wouldn't fancy a 7 series with a three pedal manual so both have a place for sure![]()
