This question may cause some debate.....

Im just having some light hearted ness about it, not taking it too seriously like some people have in this thread, getting all upset about gearboxes

Don't go thinking I wasn't offended - I just don't want a fight :x

:P

6.08 VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
A vehicle with automatic transmission is defined in regulations as `A vehicle in which
the gear ratio between the engine and the wheels can be varied only by the use of
the accelerator or brakes'. In general a vehicle without a manual clutch is regarded
as an automatic.

It would seem strictly speaking DCT is not automatic in the eyes of the DVLA as you can indeed change gears with something other than the accelerator or brake. Although in general it is

I think your able to appreciate the benefits of a proper manual though ;)

Indeed. Still miss my auto. I think both have their place, and it's as much about the car itself as your driving style and preference. I think the M would lose its soul with an auto box.

So if I phone Bmw tomorrow and ask them if I can drive a DCT using my automatic only lisence.... What you think they'll tell me?

I doubt BMW would answer you as they would be concerned at litigation.

They'd tell you to ring the DVLA - and all you get then is some Welsh cnut winding you up about the Rugby

:tumbleweed:

I always thought the term slushbox was reserved for a gearbox with a torque converter. I,e. No mechanical contact, just fluid. :fuelfire:

Wow what have I started!

Well based upon my one week ownership I can definitely say that driving the DCT is different than a manual. When stuck in traffic I no longer have an aching leg with constantly having to use the clutch, the car does the hard work for me :). And when I want to play I can manually change gear using the paddles, so as others have said the DCT offers the best of both worlds depending upon the type of driving you do.

Yes I am having to learn the car and the DCT but that's the fun part. Class her as an auto or semi-manual I care not, the car is a beast and I love it :).

At the end of the day guys these are all awesome machines

I actually like DCT - they're an awesome box as is the ZF 8 speed in the newer f series cars

I think some people are scared of calling them 'auto' as it sounds old man-ish, but in the points I've raised previously, I think any one other than a die hard expert will still see them as an auto :)

The same as anyone other than a die hard will see the M badges all over the 35iS and see it as an M car.

Doesn't mean the man in the street is right

I have driven a V8 M3 with DCT...I purchased the three pedal manual version instead but the DCT is a great gearbox though, had a Audi TTS with the two pedal S-Tronic and got bored very quickly and have the ZF 8 speed in a 640d and I still get bored but that gearbox does seem to suit the engine though.

I still class the DCT/S-Tronic and ZF6/8 all as slushboxes because to me they are a lazy gearbox because all you do is just use your right foot most of the time, but they all have a place and suit different cars...I wouldn't want a Caterham with a DCT and I wouldn't fancy a 7 series with a three pedal manual so both have a place for sure

Horses for courses and the DTC is definately the right box for that beast.

PS The DVLA log book classes it as an auto :poke:

Hello

DCT for me ... 1st time I have owned one, would not go back to a manual cog box .. but every one has there own preferences

Windmills have cogs!
Gearboxes have teeth

I used to wind an old Chief Engineer up with the cog word as a young lad !
