Update.

Had a call from the CID today. The idiots who broke into our house last year and have been in custody since just before christmas were in court this week. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 5 and a half years each. Great news.

Must say the cid played a blinder.

Find their prison address and send them a cheesy signed photo of yourself sitting in your Z with the roof down on a sunny day. Maybe add "Wish you were here xxx" on the back.

I'm sure they will appreciate that while being buggered silly in their cage

Until they're released and come looking...

As for the Defender three to four a week were getting stolen up until I retired.

What were you, a one man crime wave?
:)

Edit. Having read the thread it makes a bit more sense now.

A few weeks ago burglars broke into a neighbours house during the day between 11-00 am and 17-00 pm took keys and stole an Audi TT , another Audi was stolen the same way same time of the day ,neighbours got a new TT ,,it happened to us about 12 years ago ,the A**e H***s broke into house took my keys and wife's keys from a key box then stole my VW Passatt and wife's MX5 which was in the garage while we were asleep found my car ,recovered , wife's car partially burnt out in Tyseley Bham polce would not get it for us ,from getting call off cops ,phoning ins comp and the recovery vehicle getting to scene maybe 1hr , the MX5 was stolen again ,the police did not perform very in my opinion ,I told them as well we had decorators in the week before doing front of house ,wife caught one of them in lounge , ,they were involved in my opinion , but could not prove it ,The moral of the storey, don't leave your keys in a visible place , if you have tradesmen working in your property never ever ever leave them to their own devices or to nose around your property ,not ever , trust me they will , this is what happened to us,

Another one to be wary off is when a taxi takes you to your holiday coach/airport. I've heard of them tipping off burglars that your house in unoccupied.

My colleagues sister attended her 40th wedding anniversary party last week.
Whilst there her house got broke into.
Apparently they hardly ever go out, so someone knew they would be out.
Where do you start when there was 200 guests?

The kitchen glass was lifted out because the double glazing panel had been fitted from the outside!
Her sister is into dress making and the toe rags had scattered her dress pins in a cage where she keeps the dogs if they go out.
The pins were stuck in their little paws.

I told my colleague they needed to keep valuables in a bank vault......but looks like even they are not secure!

It would indeed Andy :D

I've seen owners dogs fed with mince meat in the past :o
:? errr, .....
A bit of meat as a peace offering and you'll often become the dog's best friend!

Yep, remember a few Burglaries where mince meat/steak was used by the offenders to 'bribe' the dog!!

Oh boy oh boy. Just caught up on this. Its time for the American to speak! well where do i begin?
Well basics: not only am I from the US but i live in Texas :guns: So freedom with guns so that makes people think twice about theft.

Seeing as though my only brother and my step father passed away a couple years back its just my mom, grandmother, and I so now I guess you could say I took the role as "man of the house" if you will. Well for starters, protection wise I keep a gun in my room. Yay for self defense and private property signs.

Over the years I have put up iron bars behind the glass (have to deal with the glass before messing with the bars) because we aren't in the nicest neighborhood. Iv hired somebody to put up cameras watching every window/door to the house and garage. The front door has a small porch entrance and the only way into the porch to reach the door is through a swinging iron door. To get to the garage you have to open a relatively large iron swinging gate (vehicles can only go through if both doors are open.) which is connected to side of the house and the other end of the large gate is connected to the wooden fence that goes around the property to the opposite side of the house. My room is located on the other end of the wall which the gate is connected to and if they broke the lock, the switch to disconnect the 2 gates is very rusty so wiggling that loose you could literally hear it from the other side of the street. Which I could also hear if somebody tried breaking the lock.

Picture of said large gate: (infront of the zed 4) and on the left the entrance to the front door but with the iron door opened.

Next step to steal our vehicles is getting past our German shepherd and husky which are even barking now at 2:40am. Then finally either break into the garage which has a remote control garage door and a side door that also has a iron door with a lock and then the normal door. Or try to get the keys through the back door to the house with the same entrance as the others with the iron door then a normal door.

The German shepherd just showed up and slept infront of the house a few nights so I took him in. I thought and so did everyone else that he was a mean stray dog probably because of abuse or neglect but hes extremely sweet and friendly. Then a few months after I took him in, 2 times we had the same exact incidents days apart from eachother. I hear a loud noise and the dog barking so I go outside and see a man trying to climb out of our yard after seeing our dog. And yet both times the persons leg was bitten by my dog.

For my car I have a kill switch, tracking device and a manual transmittion :P and as for our keys i make my mother leave her car keys on the kitchen table (steal a BMW or a s**t nissan?) and I put my car keys inside a fake bible with a lock on the inside and I put it in a bookshelf by the front door.

Im sure it would be considered overkill and the bars on the windows and doors ugly but, the way I look at it is id rather live in an ugly well protected house with my family safe rather than a nice pretty unprotected house with an injured family member. Plus I loooove my car.

I guess that's my jumbled up security description. Sorry if its poorly worded. Its already 3:30am and IV just woken up for work in a few hours. Congratulations if you made it to the end :poke:

One of the reasons I want to return to Wales to live is security. Don't even bother locking anything, absolutely no theft worries at all.

Living in the midlands you are never far away from some eastern european, traveller or asian crime gang waiting to make a quick penny.

For my sins I manage motor claims for one of the largest Uk insurers and so have plenty of experience of the misery caused when people's pride and joy is spirited away. Somewhere in this long thread I read someone was concerned about insurers trying to wriggle out of paying if keys are not hidden away etc. Unless keys are left in the car, or at least reasonable are is taken with them ( and being left down stairs at night in a locked house certainly qualifies as reasonsable care ) an insurer will always pay - If not the Ombudsman will force them to pay!

Up until a couple of years ago it was understood that modern cars could not be stolen without the keys, however over the last 2-3 years there has been a significant increase in thefts without keys of BWW's Audi's Range Rovers etc with thieves cloning blank keys through the OBD port. As soon as manufacturers release a new security patch, the thieves find a way around it.

As a result one of the most effective theft prevention measures for high end cars is the fitting of an OBD lock that bolts across the OBD port. Dealers or prevented from offering this as European legislation requires all new cars to be supplied with an open OBD port within reach of the drivers seat.

Something to consider if you own high end BMW ( Z4 obviously included !!) and you live in a high risk area - This used to be almost exclusively London and the SE but the problem is spreading

I'll probably be scorned for my lack of political correctness but watching just a few of the high profile thefts unfold in the media recently it because pretty clear what the demographic for high end car theft is.

You get joy riders and petty thieves everywhere but the recent car theft crime wave in the Midlands was all targeted by crime gangs with shopping lists from clients on the continent.

Does nobody on this forum have a kill switch in their vehicles? Or even a tracking device? Just hide the kill switch somewhere hard to find. It might make them longer but you never know. It could Bethe difference from taking your vehicle to just having a missing radio or something. Or am I missing something?

I had a hidden fuel pump switch and a hidden " ignition" switch on a previous 4x4 and I agree with you that they are a simple but probably a very effective theft prevention for a drive away but probably not if its stolen to order.

I applaud a bit of political INcorrectness and I guess lots of other people do too, it's just that they are too politically correct to admit it.
