Thieves around.

Might be slightly off-topic, but I would have thought in hand to hand with a burglar, likely in the dark, a hammer would be more effective. Unless you are trained how to wield a long weapon (yes, I spotted the obvious joke!) the chances are you would be disarmed fairly quickly and likely on the receiving end of it.

Personally I leave the keys downstairs... couldn't give a stuff if the car went to be honest, that's what insurance is for... would leave them a £20 for some petrol and a mars bar in case their hungry if I thought it would remove them from the house quicker!

SOME MORE THOUGHTS

No one can predict how they are going to react when confronting an intruder, I hope none of the forum members ever have to experience such an event.
But remember it is likely you will be disorientated, have little in the way of night vision, & will not know how many intruders you have.
I attended many, many burglaries during my career & I lost count of the number of proper 'handy lads' who were honest enough to admit they were relieved they didn't wake & have to confront them.

Sp3ctre - You are quite right, ultimately its a machine, & if they get in, take the keys & then the car so be it. Ultimately You and any family are safe.

I know for some my "home is my castle" - and would therefore, if woken, have a go.

Despite being an ex-cop with training (Ex firearms/Close Protection Officer) I fall into the category, right or wrong it's the way I'm made.

Unfortunately I am in that category as well. I have handed out many a lecture to burglary victims about how to protect themselves but I would not actually follow my advice. I could not live with myself if I had let someone or a group get the better of me, in my own home. I am very defensively orientated and unfortunately, pride also comes into this. You don't always think of your family, long term, when the adrenaline starts.

Be safe people.

To put things in perspective .
Sheffield 2014, Christmas Day morning 9-30am.
A 61 year old guy gets a knock at the door, answers the door is assaulted, small amount of cash and games machine stolen.
The guy dies in hospital later that day.

You are right, for some the last 'angry man' they came up against was Jonny in the playground who had just nicked their Sherbet Dip.

If that is the case, then I am pleased they have never been involved in such an unpleasant scenario since :)

... I never did get that sherbert dip back

Agree re the above. I'm not looking to encourage whatever adrenalin pumped thief and mates into coming upstairs to find the keys. He can have the car rather than stick a screwdriver into me. He'd have to get the Zed out of the garage and past the Jag :)

Decent locks, alarm system, security lights and that's it. If they want to get in they will.

Incidentally in the Sutton area (which is where this post started and I live) there have been a spate of high performance saloon car thefts. Been a couple of XF's within shouting distance of my house and that had me concerned as the Jags 10x value of the Zed...

Do you know CJ, I only retired in October - and being a BMW fan I tended to take note of Bm's that were stolen.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but in West Yorks, BMW's were down the list of prestige models stolen. Don't get me wrong, some were stolen, but the cars below were targeted more.

like I mentioned in the earlier post in the last 4 years of my service I can only remember one Z4 being stolen. The favourites were Audi's, VW's, Land Rover Defenders & their associated parts.

You hit the Nail on the head grumps - people forget the burgling pond life are in a lot of cases, despite being smokers, out of their heads on Cocaine, much younger, & fitter than they are. They are feral and used to the violence/fighting etc.

That's my thinking. Those after the Z4's are to a large extent pondlife. SK93's from memory was stolen by a druggie and sold for £300.. These folks don't care about property or life. I like your term 'feral' and think it well describes them.

At the other end of the scale are the pro's. They are after specific makes to a market. They'll take the car wherever and whenever they choose. Be it on the dive in a fake 'bump' on the road or out of a car park.

Either way no point in exposing yourself to danger.

Like halifaxbantam I have had the pleasure of dealing with Mr Angry at least twice a year although normally I have a shield and helmet. I have had valves removed and the caps put on giving a very slow puncture. General alcohol or legal high fuelled morons with nothing better than to find their next fix.
I have an alarm, cctv with infrared, anti snap locks and snarly Marley who barks like crazy if a spider steps on the driveway. Me, I take the keys upstairs.
A lot of these thieving feral scumbags also do not want you to see them so they don't get picked out on a viper ID process. Every circumstance is different and how you will react is an unknown entity unless you are trained or a bit handy.
The weak link is the judicial system and the lack of custodial sentencing given.

The whole reason I left the fuzz. Got sick of delivering people to the cells and then seeing them the next day with a grin on their face. Sentences are generally half what they should be and that is why we have twice the crime we should have.

More thoughts...

Many years ago i actually caught a scrote in the act of removing the Clarion radio from my XR3i..Bent the door frame, smashed the window and he was in..

He was away on his mountain bike, and had plenty of time as i got some shoes on,got my car keys and gave chase..I caught up to him about 2 miles later and knocked him off his bike, retrieved my radio and then gave him some rough justice with a Krooklok..

Have a guess which one of us got 120 hours community service ?

Your chances of a firearms cert are probably screwed as well!

Yep...

I was refused a shotgun licence many years ago....Even though i was an associate member at a firearms club and had been for many years..

This was due to a different situation many years ago though.

I recently had to beat a burglar to death with his own shoes and then peeled him with a hot spoon.......etc etc.

Update.

Had a call from the CID today. The idiots who broke into our house last year and have been in custody since just before christmas were in court this week. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 5 and a half years each. Great news.

Must say the cid played a blinder.

Find their prison address and send them a cheesy signed photo of yourself sitting in your Z with the roof down on a sunny day. Maybe add "Wish you were here xxx" on the back.

I'm sure they will appreciate that while being buggered silly in their cage
