The time has come: AP Brakes

Comparing Csl wheels or skirts to brake discs is slightly disingenuous. Like I said, you hardly see them unless totally side on to the car and it's stationary. The fact Simpsons didn't up sell speaks volumes about them too in my opinion.

True...But if it wasn't about cosmetics you wouldn't of fitted Aero skirts, CSL's etc...

Just seems odd, not sure why Simpsons would suggest it, not particularly good upselling on their behalf!

I got the same advice from them, but then I did say I was a begginer (I certainly Bloody well am  :driving: :) ):

Hi Julien

Thank you for your enquiry.

I have two options for you. The first is AP brake kit for the front, this is all you really need, the second is the complete kit.
if your rear discs are in good condition then i would just suggest rear calipers and pads. I suggest you use a Pagid RS 29 pad compound. Standard kit comes with Ferodo DS 2500.

simpson are imo simply the best out their, they really are fabulous.... i trust them where i simply wouldnt be able to sleep if i was dealing with sytner for example..... i understand your decision no doubt, i guess as well ultimate performance asthetics do bother me aswell.... but then im probably what id call "neurotic over the details"
you will simply be blown away with the APs, i SOOOO enjoyed the install as well, infact i spent in total around 5 days installing them and paid a rediculous amount of attention to detail, every single nut and bolt was torqued to the specific value, i had a great time installing the AP kit.....

keep an eye on the bleed nipples, mines "sweated" slightly under hard use, in the end i took all the wheels off to find the middle section was simply full of Brake fluid where i'd bled the brakes, abit of cotton wool, soapy water job done, never looked back since.....

Check out the Stoptech bed in procedure, this really works well and keeps the brakes/rotors/pads in top condition, i do this "bed in" procedure reguarly to keep an nice pad transfer layer. Pedal feel is perfect!! when are you getting this bay boys installed playa??

You can only see the discs when stationary and even then only when you're looking at the car directly side-on. Is it such a problem seeing as it is entirely cosmetic? Really doesn't bother me whether they match 8)
In my personal opinion I think Simpson only advices this set-up because it's cheaper when you don't buy the rear AP discs...and keep the oem ones. Because in real life it's probably not necessary to replace the rear discs. Like everybody knows; most of the braking is done by the fronts. The question I ask myself; what if your oem rear Z4M brake discs should need replacement, would they also suggest buying oem Z4M discs again or would they suggest to buy rear AP discs also? I went for the full AP kit front and rear... I did not do this for the look. But when I made the decision to buy the expensive front and rear AP BBK then I wanted everything from AP (also the discs). But that's just me

Fair enough. I'm not doubting Simpsons, if anything; cosmetically i prefer the drilled disks. Just the mis-match would annoy me.

Something for the future perhaps. - Enjoy.

Another benefit of the AP discs would be that come replacing you'll only need to buy the ring only not the whole unit like with the stock items.

Hello Islander!

Is that really the case can you not just change the disks on the OEM kit? I need to change the front ones I fried and was advised it would be a lot cheaper than the full AP BBK (obnviously) and to install Pagid pads, steel hoses and liquid. Even if I upgrade the kit I wonder how quickly I'll wear out the disks and have to go through the whole process again, in which case I might as well go BBK.

Any ideas on costs? (am waiting for quote).

Cheers.

Hello back! :D

You change the whole unit, ring + hat. On the AP's (I THINK) you can change just the ring, thus costing less. To illustrate, here's photos of the stock front replacements i took a couple of weeks ago. It's all one unit.

when replacing the AP you keep the centre bell and replace the rotor.... Ga41 is correct....

waiting on costs for OEM then will decide:

1. Front OEM new disks + S Stell hoses + LIquid + Pagid. Rear S stell hoses + liquid+ Pagid
2. Full AP BBK (got a decent price at £3330 - sorry do we never speak price on this forum?

I am yes, i tried to do it yesterday afternoon but being such an amateur i didnt check to see if i had all the tools needed and discovered that i was missing a 16mm hex socket.... Of course i had to find this out after i removed a wheel, the caliper and the pads.... :headbang:

Yep, delivered to Simpsons this Friday. I'll be getting them fitted asap the week after! (on holiday at the moment)
By now your AP racing BBK is probably fitted under you M... Any opinions so far? I'm halfway the 6 weeks delivery time...

Nope, being fitted this Friday coming at last. There is a chance it might be brought forward to Tuesday with any luck but as soon as they're fitted I'll report back

Yeah tell me about it. Apparently the rear calipers arrived a good while ago but there was a long wait for the fronts. Hopefully you won't be waiting so long

playa... you will be sooo happy with these, definatly one of my favourite mods to date :-) pad changes will take no time as well :-)
The rotors in terms of thickness are enough to make you smile alone...... very very very good quality items... even better this setup is a decent amount lighter than stock :-)

playa please post your review asap
