Tearful in London (Tier 4 in London)

Inevitable really. I see people with masks over their mouths only, not their nose and social distancing is only evident when queuing. Once in a shop or store they brush past each other very closely. I had to visit a hospital recently where nurses and doctors did not wear masks and again brush past people who are sitting in seats fully masked waiting to be seen. I waited for an hour, seats were never cleaned as people moved on and the only people who seemed to be wary of others were the public. No, the nursing staff were not busy and had time to gossip. Honest, I had lots of time to listen. They are not all like that, or are they?

On the other hand I had to attend a small Osteopath business and no one was allowed in until seats were cleaned. Everyone had to wear a mask and use a hand sanitiser. Well done the local business trying to make a living. Hospitals? Avoid them if you can. My borough has had the highest level of Covid cases for a while now and yes the hospital is at the heart of it.

It distresses me to hear people say that the Government keeps changing its mind and we need Christmas. In a crisis, and this is a crisis, things will change daily or even hourly and we have to get used to that. Don’t be slow to make change, adapt quickly and be aware that we are in the middle of a Pandemic. I won’t quote figures from Googling anything, but I observe and use my initiative to keep myself and my wife as safe as possible. I am not cowering in a corner frightened of catching this or any virus, my regular routine has only changed to cope with some people, who I’m afraid are my enemy at the moment.

I don’t understand need to go crazy at Christmas when my son was serving in afghanistan we had our celebration when he came home in February

Your experience in shops seem to be the same as mine BeeEmm. I avoid them as much as possible!

But what you found in the hospital is even more concerning! When I got my hair cut last week my barber shop was being far more careful. And when I finally got my flu jab this morning the GP centre had things really well organised with a queue outside, only letting people in one at a time and exit via the fire doors.

Typical Londoner view though. Virtually the whole of South East England will be in Tier 4 tomorrow!

Think Boris missed a trick with Christmas. All the other faiths had their celebrations cancelled. Boris should have done the same for Christmas. Then picked a weekend say in May (when this should be mostly over) where this a Monday Bank Holiday, tagged an extra Friday Bank Holiday onto it and called for a multi faith celebration weekend. Not religious at all but would have been seen to be doing the right thing instead of this current mess.

Not all of us get time off in February!!!

I break up from work Tuesday, I then go back 4th January and my next decent amount of time off is at the end of July.

Add to the fact that my wife is going back to work next month after being off the last 9 months on maternity leave, means this has royally messed up our first Christmas as a family. Most of my daughters presents are in Scotland with the in laws as that's where we were spending our Christmas in our bubble that was perfectly fine a few days ago.

Absolutely fuming and the government are a disgrace to allow this to chop and change so much. Bunch of absolute bellends.

Not everyone in the south each is a prized prick! Some of us wear masks religiously for work and shopping, avoid people like the plague and rarely leave the house unless its essential. But I guess it's easier to tar everyone with the same brush.

All too easy - TV reporters always seem to stop and interview the people who give the wrong impression of an area.

I agree entirely with what you have written. Unless everyone plays their part in helping to control this terrible disease things will only get worse. There will certainly be more avoidable deaths. We live in a rural village with a low incidence of COVID. I discovered today that one of our neighbour’s daughters has come up from London with her partner to stay overnight to see her parents. These are normally well balanced and very likeable folk who we regard as good friends!

Whoops got my last paragraph in the wrong place!

You’ve still got a job, your wife has still got a job, your daughter is too young to have any clue what Xmas is.....do you not think you’re not doing too badly in this s**t storm...?

You just don’t get it. :headbang: They are doing this because the hospitals are filling up at a rapid rate and one of the few mechanisms to slow it down,is the lockdown to reduce the spread. There’s millions affected, not just you. Many have lost their livelihood.

Think this is what people are forgetting now perhaps not helped by quotes from the Gov't that admission rates at some hispitals have substantially fallen, unfortuntely others are on their knees at breaking point.

I was unexpectedly in hospital last week in Glasgow and had a completely different experience to you thankfully.

From the moment I walked in the door, where I was made to sanitise, to getting clerked in and shown to my bed there was only one member of staff I interacted with that wasn’t masked and that was the receptionist in the unit I was going into. She was behind a fully sealed glass screen.

Once in the unit every nurse was gloved, masked and changed their apron after every interaction with a different patient.

My consultant, surgeon and an anaesthetist were all masked when they came to speak to me at different times and I had to wear a mask when I was in theatre, even though I’d had a COVID test and had been in isolation since it.

The nurses in the prep and recovery room were constantly busy the whole time I was there.

The only difference I noticed was there were less patients than normal.

I’m hoping yours was the one off experience rather than mine because I was very impressed and hope it’s the same in other hospitals rather than a mirror of you4s.

In this terrible situation I will happily say I felt as safe as I could given the circumstances, much safer than I do in Tesco’s :o

Shambolic indecision is how I see the governments handling of this. The virus absolutely loves it

Data on the new variant presented at the press conference showed that it was popping up in 28% of cases 3 weeks ago or so and then up to 62% most recently. Wouldn't that set alarm bells ringing if you were tasked with reviewing its significance and trying to understand why rates were going up in London despite the restrictions? Of course it would and my guess is that the scientists were telling the government exactly that days and weeks ago. But no, "the public are sensible enough to make their own assessment of the risk" is what we were repeatedly told. Most people I know are very willing to follow rules if they are clear and reasons evidenced. What they can't do is make decisions without the evidence when only the government knows the truth. If I'd been told before that the new variant was ramping up at such an alarming rate I would have been able to see that the 5 day xmas break was madness and would have willingly accepted that.

The best way to torture a person or a population is to continually raise and then dash their hopes. Unfortunately we have a PM who is both indecisive and incapable of delivering bad news until he has no other choice but to do so which more often than not is way too late. He is not up to the challenge and the sooner we are shot of him the better of we will be.

Yep let’s replace him with the Abbott Corbyn and McDonald show....I’m sure they’d have it sewn up and dealt with months ago..... Or would you like Mr weak meek and mild capt’ hindsight ‘I have no alternative’ Starmer...?

You’re too political to take seriously....if you know so much go and tell them where they’re going wrong, I’m sure they’d be more than willing to listen. They’re screwed whatever they do....they’re going to upset folk no matter what, it’s an impossible task to deal with made all the worse by politically motivated whingers complaining at every step egged on by shitshow biased reporters like Kuennsberg, what the f**k happened to this country sticking together in the face of crisis...? All we hear is moaning and whining. :x

Actually I feel sorry for Boris. He wanted to allow some leeway over Christmas but really had no choice when presented with the latest statistics, which were only recently released. It's an unprecented event so changes have to be made according to developments, even if they are last-minute ones. In the current situation would you still agree to up to 3 families meeting up indoors?

Who exactly do you think would be up to coping any better? Hopefully not the knighted labour whiner - I think the last General Election gave an indication of what the population think of him and his party!

Lokks like I agree with john-e89.

+1, plenty of time for the political war to resume once this crisis has been vanquished. Until then we need to unite.

No government would fair any better, it’s a case of devil if you do or devil if you don’t!

The same in all countries anyway. I am in NL at the moment and they have made as many changes to rules as everywhere else. Including no more flights to the UK as of this morning.

Before John-e89 gets too excited, I have my car here. Just have to battle through the Calais migrant war zone later today as they have come out in force due to the lorries stuck everywhere due a self inflicted brexit pain.

My takeaway from all this tier number malarkey is:
One day you in a low risk tier feeling relatively safe and the next day all hell breaks loose.
Bedfordshire (my home country) up until recently had one of the lowest infection rates. In a matter of days it has gone from tier 2 to tier 4. Places like Cornwall should not feel complacent.

I would agree it's a hell of a juggling act for the Government and I know Boris comes across at times as an indecisive baffoon but he's reliant on his advisors at the end of the day. Only thing I would grumble about is we should have gone into full lockdown like Italy etc far sooner and not had the tier system nonsense at all which has just caused a load of confusion and you just can't control an infectious disease that way. Either lock everyone away or not at all.

Tim.
