STOLEN! YL03 HCA - Update 5 - Home, for now!

na... I think they are prob charging storage fees to the insurance company... so are earning whilst its kept where it is! so in no rush:)

nope... no storage charge until it's cleared SOCO, and then I (insurance) have 24 hours to move it before they charge £20 a day rate.

so.. after chasing down the fuzz once again, I'm told that I MIGHT be able to at least see the car tomorrow sometime...

not sure I'm going to sleep all that well tonight.

Fingers crossed you get to see it mate!! I know I wouldn't be able to sleep that's for sure!

Crikey what a bureaucratic nightmare. Really sorry to hear about this sorry situation. Let's hope there isn't anything seriously wrong with your car. Though the cosmetic issues would have me in tears.

update 2.. I've spoken to the insurers again this morning, advising them that it should be free this afternoon and I'd like it to go to Sytner.

They kicked up a bit of a fuss about it "not being an insurance approved garage" blah blah, but when I pointed out that their full name was "BMW Sytner", a large, multi-store, official dealer of BMW, they decided to stop arguing.

However, they're saying they that if I take it to BMW, it can take up to five days for them to come and inspect it, meaning nothing is likely to get done until at least Wednesday next week (however, if I get it towed to their approved garage, which is in a totally different county, they can look at it within 24 hours).

TBH, I'm not letting them take it anywhere but BMW, but my concern is that BMW is going to be more expensive than their tinpot garage - how does that fair when in comes to repairs?
If BMW give me a quote that's over the market value of the car, but their indy gives one lower, do I have the right to say "move it to your garage then" rather than get it written off?

(Before anyone says it, I have NO intention of ever selling my car, so I'm NOT worried so much about resale value - so the fact the BMW don't do the repair work isn't really an issue other than my own personal satisfaction, so please, don't just say "just write off and get another" :)
Winston's my baby!)

Might have missed a post, so sorry if I am covering old ground, but do you know what's actually wrong with the car yet ?

I think if you agree to have it moved to their garage of preference then they should still repair it if it's economically viable. If it's not and they write it off as a cat D I'm not sure how that works - do you have to buy it with the insurance money, or do you get to keep it and use the insurance money to repair it ?

I'd imagine you get to buy it for "scrap value", as surely that's how much they would consider it worth?
(Market value - cost to repair.. and if that's less or equal to zero, it makes it uneconomical to repair and thus scrap...)
However, I don't know on that - technically, if they write it off and you accept the cheque, then it's owned by them.

You've not missed a post tho - I still haven't seen it, but SHOULD be getting to see either later today or tomorrow morn.

Just been on the blower to BMW, and they can't recover it, so I'm having to get green flag to do so.
they've also told me I would have to pay £50 for the diagnostics, but should be able to recover that from the insurance.. guess that makes sense.

Anyways.. I guess I'm still on hold, waiting for the fuzz to do their jobs.
I'll update proper once I've seen it (will be taking a camera with me!)

the last car I had written off got valued at £2k, they said I could either have a cheque for £2k or if I wanted to buy back the car, they would simply send a cheque for the £2k minus the value of the car and the car would be returned within 48 hours. They valued the car at £250... it sold on ebay for £1k just for the engine alone so their values don't make a lot of sense!?!
if they write it off they do own it but I've always known of family and friends to have the chance to buy it back as long as its not cat A or B.
Its not the cost of repair alone normally... it is the cost of other things...
again my old car wasn't written off on the cost of the repair, it was because the part had to be shipped by boat from japan ~ 6 weeks? and they would have had to provide a car for that time so they decided to just write it off on that basis?!?

I think you will find they wil want about 20% of the written off value to buy the car back. Guess this is only cosmetic damage so would be Cat D for sure.

I think I've now gone past caring..

Rang up again today, but the police didn't have any update; didn't even know if SOCO had been to the car yet or were planning to.

Rang the recovery yard, and apparently, the SOCO officer has been to the garage today, but knocked off at 1:30pm, saying "she didn't have time to do it today, but she might be able to look at it tomorrow".

might....

might....

:headbang:

Anyone know where I can start a formal complaint about this?
I appreciate they got the car and arrested the fella, but I have to get my ACCURATE list of uninsured costs to the witness care team by lunchtime tomorrow for the hearing on the 17th, and I can't, because I have no idea whats even in the car.

I'm effectively about to loose out on being able to submit my claim, because the police, at least to me, care only about getting a successful arrest on their numbersheets, rather than helping the victim get sorted.

This is just some terrible Joke. It has to be.

Assuming its notts police who are handling it?

Claim for everything on the assumption it is gone if you have no access to the information. It is easier to adjust it downwards later on rather than upwards.

do you have a legal obligation to let the coppers go over it?

apparently I do now that I've allowed them to recover it for forensics.

I only agreed to them doing that as they said "they will be as quick as possible"
perhaps should have got a more accurate timescale :/

18 months the BIB had one of my computers to investigate a colleague who'd been accused of taking 'inappropriate' photos in the office/toilets, as I stupidly told the BIB that he occasionally used my machine when his was playing up.

It was a company machine, so I just got a replacement and forgot about it until they phoned and said I could pick it up as the charges had been dropped (although the colleague never came back to work).

Surely they could have just done a forensic clone of the drive and checked that out instead. Although I don't think they did anything as they didn't ask for the password to remove the full-disk encryption the company uses.

The machine was fecked when it came back though. Was dented, full of dust and wouldn't boot up. Think we just threw it in the recycling pile.
