State of underside front bumper

Just been to my mechanic friend to do a oil and filters change. I've never done any anything like that and don't have the tools so got him to take me through it all and check what I'd done after.

Had a good look round everything on the car while it was up on the lift, talking me through it all and gave it a clean bill of health. He was quite surprised how clean and good it was underneath which, for a 12 year old car on 95k kept outside, I was rather happy with.

Then had a look at the front, underside of the front bumper is scrapped to hell! I've had it clip a couple of times on some speed bumps round here, but I wonder how much was done before I got the car. Without getting it up in the air I don't see how you would get a good view of this. Car isn't lowered and on 17s so quite surprised by this. Anyone else looks and seen similar?

I think all it takes to get like that is one error of judgement when parking with a kerb at the back of the space.
 
Yeah, mine was like that at both front corners and it's white (bumpers are black underneath)! I just laid on my back and sanded it flat (ish) then sprayed with some colour-match paint. I think it's usually kerbs at parking spaces does it.

Could be worse, though. I saw a chap get into a nearly new MB at East Midlands airport a while back. Because he slumped into the seat quite hard, the car obviously dropped enough to beach his front splitter on the kerb. He reversed away and 3/4 of the front of his car stayed where it was. It was a right mess and the noise was horrendous :o
 
I have needed to use driveways where this is easily done unless you approach at the correct angle and go very slowly. Whenever I buy a used car I always run my hand under the front bumper to see if it's rough or smooth. If it's rough then it's down on hands and knees with my phone's torch function switched on.
 
Actually it’s not that bad…there are much worse ones..the tell tale signs are the air dams centre and left n right..they get damaged / ripped off when you really ground the front end.. :tumbleweed:

We had our 208 front splitter ripped off by a Pug dealer after parked over a kerb and when we reversed off it tore 3/4 of it off - they replaced it FOC and took 50% off the service as well :headbang:
 
No, it's afflicted every BMW I've had to some extent.

The worst was my E46 Compact on Sport suspension. I parked in a car park front on to the kerb, but when I braked the front must have dropped slightly. So when I reversed out the bottom of the bumper caught on the back of the kerb and got torn away from the undertray. :headbang:

I've always stopped before I get to the kerb since then!
 
Well that makes me feel better that it's not just me and could be much worse! I'll take solace in the clean bill of mechanical health and ignore the cosmetics :rofl:
 
The first ones are always the worst, now just enjoy driving it. If you ever need it sorted then Hoggy at Belliver would magic it away.
 
My mates all electric Porsche Taycan adjusts its suspension height as you park if it senses a kerb in the way!

Same for mine, previous owner had scraped both front corners so I recently sanded and sprayed. I noticed then that the front spoiler (as seen in photo 1 held on by the 4 bolts) whilst still firmly attached had been neatly trimmed to almost flat. More than likely after suffering some sort of damage, I assume. Ive now replaced that spoiler and will tread more lightly over speed humps. Previous owner installed reversing camera and front camera angled to take care of avoiding obstacles when parking nose first. Works a treat.
