Speeding...

Wessex police don't offer driver awareness courses apparently.

You wouldn't have been offered a NSAC even in those areas that run them for exceeding the 30 mph by that amount. I think 42 mph is the limit.

Thats lucky you only got 3 points at that speed. So he pulled you over with the blues lights?

I got busted for the first time last yr, eventually everyone will get caught... As even 31 in a 30 is an offence.

Yes, silver honda civic with blue lights in the grills. Reading up online 3 points and £100 fine is correct, if I had been 56 or above then I would of had 6 points/court summons. He said to me himself that it would be unlikely 3 points would have much effect on my insurance, it makes you think though, I guess my heads been else where for the last few weeks and not really as focused as I normally am.

I found last yr that 3 points would make my insurance go up from £400 to £500! But i did a speed awareness course instead... And even then elephant (who were by far the cheapest) went up £80 with the course declared..Still cheaper then the rest but a kick in the teeth!

Really? I've had 3 points for 3 years now and not noticed any difference to my insurance....maybe £20 a year at most.

Before purchasing the Z (I was 24 at the time), I'd only had the points a year or so and so wanted to figure out whether it was best to wait until they had expired before buying such a powerful car at a reasonably young age, but when using comparison sites the difference in yearly premiums was negligible

A young girl on a bike rode out in front of him and the impact killed her.
How old was the girl?
Did her parents take any responsibility for letting her ride her bike on a road where she (presumably) wasn't able to judge the speed of the traffic?
If he had been doing 30mph rather than 50ish, would he still have hit her (i.e. did she just ride straight out in front of him)?

She was 10 or 12, I think. And yes she rode out of a side street in front of a car, but you can't expect a child to have the same road sense as (most) adults. At 30 mph he'd have been more likely to see her, to brake or avoid her, and the impact would have been less.

Her parents no doubt regretted letting her ride on the road, but as a parent you have to get the right balance between wrapping them in cotton wool and allowing them to dangerous things. Riding a bike in a side street (in a quiet village) probably seemed reasonable at the time.

Close call, every time I have been caught speeding over my 31 years of driving its been because of a lack of concentration... Kicked myself every time...

When I deliberately go fast I am keeping full concentration, I never speed in 30,40,50 built up areas deliberately; only on a wide open road out of a built up area. My last ticket was doing 41 in a 30 and I was not concentrating after returning from a friends funeral! Went on the speeding aware course which actually was very good, and also shocking how many pensioners were present!!!

Best thing if you want to drive fast....take to the motorways in France....great roads, nice and smooth.....have a weeks holiday, take 500 euro....get snapped all you want, if you get pulled just pay the fine. Easy. I do it most years and you'd be surprised how quick you can get from Calais to Paris driving at 130 upwards.....

And yes I'm sure we have all driven to fast on roads here...

Sad story about the girl being killed.....

What's happening with so many sensitive people on this site of late? Too many arguments and digs.....when you post on here, be ready to be challenged and questioned. I've had enough of it in my time with a crusty old c&nt on here....I hope he's dead by the way

So speed limits become irrelevant when your abroad? Wtf kinda logic is that?

Why not save that money and do a track day? Infinitely more fun than going fast in a straight line!

It's my kinda logic....and you're right it's boring, but roof down its good.....applies to Germany too....but it's too dull to drive thru.

My logic as well Stark. I really enjoy driving through the open roads abroad at the appropriate speed which may not be the limit indicated at places.

I have no interest in track days as firstly it wrecks my car, and secondly I find going around in circles rather boring compared to a challenging mountain road.

I wouldn't say track days wreck cars, if it's in a good state in the first place there shouldn't be a problem. Track days I've done with friends have at worst gone through a set of tyres at the end of it, nothing worse than that.
Not attacking your choice, challenging mountain road sounds good to me, flooring it down a motorway just sounds tedious but whatever floats your boat at the end of the day ;)

Challenging a Speeding Fine
Successfully challenging a speeding ticket can actually occur under certain circumstances. The first point will be to check that all details on the Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) are correct. The NIP should include the vehicle’s details, and details such as the time, date and location of the speeding offence. An NIP also comes with a 14 day time limit; this means the alleged offender has received the NIP within 14 days of the offence occurring plus postage time. Be aware that small errors such as typography errors on the NIP will not be grounds for challenging a speeding fine.

Speed Cameras and Speeding Fines
If a Speed Camera was the method used to capture the speeding offence then it may be a good idea to return to the scene. Check that speed limit signs are evident and are placed on both sides of the road. Also check that the speed limits signs are highly visibly and not obscured by obstructions such as trees or bushes. If this is the case then evidence should be taken such as photographic records of the obstructions.

I don't agree that people should be able to "wriggle out" of a speeding ticket just because of a small technicality. If they were speeding, then they were speeding! The OP admits he was doing the indicated speed, so assuming point 2 is not correct, then he got banged to rights.

However, I do agree that the signage needs to be correctly visible, so agree with the 2nd point - if the signage was crap or obstructed, then you wouldn't have known the lower limit, so that would be justifyable in my book,

The speed limit was clearly put their due to the houses....its just a question of whether you knew it and ignored it etc (I'm not passing judgement, I'm just saying).

And for the record, I have been done for speeding. I knew I was over the speed limit - doing 73 on a 60...open road, over moors, no houses or pedestrians and a clear, dry day. The conditions made it safe (in my opinion) but the law is the law, and I was too fast. Did a speed awareness course and at that time, they said that a pedestrian hit at 30mph had a higher percentage chance of survival than if hit by a faster vehicle, so yes, the girl might have survived at a lower speed.

Well all done and dusted, looking at the ticket there's no mention of what speed I was doing, the police code comes back as an SP30 for insurance purposes. I guess I've been lucky boy.

Just unfortunate that SP30s are more of a license to increase the insurance premium more. It's seen as more acceptable to speed on the motorway than in a 30 which is more than likely a built up area.

At least not a ban or court appearance. Still a bummer for the next 5 years having to declare it and you'll need to do it now for which I'm sure they'll bend you over. Good luck!

Nope all done, no increase, maybe next renewal but I'm told not much if any. The points are only 'active' for 3 years, i.e. for insurance and toting up, for which you can then pay to have them removed or wait 4 years and its free. But yes some companies ask if you have had any convictions in the last 5 years. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it, my premium is pretty low as it is.

That's great  at least they've not tried to give you a hefty rise. Hopefully come renewal time it won't effect you too much either.

Anyone ever heard of 'slippage' ? A biker friend of mine has used this as a defence twice in court to succeed in winning his case.

I've just done a renewal quote (elephant) as its up next month and it's coming in at £402 with all mods and the sp30 declared, that's £55 less than I'm paying now. Surprised :|

Grizley9 - That's worrying, now I have my doubts especially as I have the confusion about the guy in front of me apparently only doing 40mph :headbang:

You got nabbed in a transition zone or a poorly marked short section of road......biggest cash cows in the civilized world :o

Of the tickets I've got over the years all but one was in one of those zones, the other one was prejudicial (picked me out of a group of locals and rang me up for 136 in a 100, I was just keeping pace with the locals !! )

You got lucky this time.... better buy another horseshoe, that one is used up :D :D
