So who has been driving in the snow ?????

I drove my 2.5 for the first time since ownership in the snow last night, I am in Yorkshire so we have been hit quite hard but can I say... Oh my god.. what a bloody knightmare! Felt very very twitchy and like there was no grip at all. These were brand new wheels and tyres in March.

Is there anything I can do to make it better or should I buy a Landrover!! :D

There are loads of sites with good advice on snow/ice driving techniques but the truth is unless you can generate grip with appropriate tyres you will struggle. Most 'soft-road' and crossover 4x4 owners don't realise that a) their standard tyres don't work in snow b) even if the 4x4 gets you going it's of limited help with stopping and ABS does nothing with zero grip - next stop the hedge

Our Citroen C1 is great, light, FWD, thin tyres no power but just keeps going until it gets too deep!

I've walked to work the last 3 days. It's fair to say, the Zed isn't moving off my drive.

Lovely!

I finally dug mines out today as it was killing me it sitting in the garage, took me three hours to dig it out but I got it out and took it for a 10mile run, loved it felt fantastic and handled the snow covered roads no bother with the DTC button on.

You can see folk thinking " That guys mad in a RWD car in this weather" :P

Now back in its bed ready for the next time.

Think I'll be sticking to the Disco this trip home... in snow and ice mode .... now with optional extra ice cream van roof..

Robiphonepictures199.jpg

tried pushing it off it just wont budge ( going to have to get a step ladder out tomorrow).... -9 dec..... yesterday i was in the Middle East at +30...

came home thinking it was the normal media hyperbole....

2 hours circling above aberdeen airport with the grim prospect of heading back to heathrow airport (so few other airports open).....drove home and saw the state of the landrover.... concluded media for once had not been over-egging it.

Well the first day down here to have proper snow, and what a fooking nightmare! Drove a few miles and turned back. BMW's are amazing, but a 50/50 weight with RWD aint good in the snow :D

A few 5 series at the side of the road, and a 3 series. But i did not get stuck, and i must say the traction is much better than on my old E46 with the snow.

Now where was my post about not needing snow tyres

The amount of stick i have been taking over owning a Z4 is well documented on this site, it gives me a certain sense of satisfaction that I made my way to work all week with no problems when the majority of guys i work with have been stranded at home. In fact on tuesday i was the only guy to make it in to the office from my team  .

My conclusion is that the Z4 is alot more resilient than people think, I even fitted a 32" LCD TV in the boot on Sunday still in its box. That was also along with a shovel, boots and various odds and ends.

Just incase anyone doesn't already know, when trying to drive on snow switch off your traction control. Check out you manual, it tells you to in there. I usually switch it off but leave the DSC on, i know some people say no but it works for me.

I bit the bullet and went looking for the zed today, took me 4 hours to dig it out and clear a path to the road :D :P :D but man was it worth it ........

Had fun all afternoon slip sliding away ..... oh yes.......

and in a moment of pure impulse - I bought this online today ........

....... I know, it won't arrive for weeks, and the snow will all be gone - but just imagine if it does and it isn't - the zed will have its own little portable garage to hide in :D

Took mine out tonight on the new snow tyres.

It's a different car compared with the contis. Starts, stops and turns corner and low speeds with drama.

We only have an inch or two here so only sideroads are a problem, and with the new tyres I've not struggled yet.

The snow above is in a different league. :?

Nice pics lucy. Unless the temp changes soon for the better that snow could still be still with you at Christmas!
And  at the Disco pic with the ice block on the roof.

Well I'm glad I'll be laid on the beach in Dubai at Christmas :P
It hasn't been as bad today and apparently the weekend is looking better and a tad warmer, so fingers crossed I might actually be able to get out next week. Certainly walking to work again in the morning though for the 4th day in a row :headbang:

Thought I'd add my two penneths. This is the car now having been totally cleared of a similar level of snow yesterday when I attempted to get it off the drive. With hind site I am glad I didnt get it away because if I'd got to work it wouldnt have had the clearance to get it parked! I've removed snow from the edge of the door about two hours ago but the stuff on the roof laid in about 36 hours. I would love to take it out to the car park about a mile away but I dont think it is going anywhere for the time being!

"Well I'm glad I'll be laid on the beach in Dubai at Christmas "

Ooerrr Lucy I wouldn't try that, those Dubai prisons are a bit grim, -not speaking from experience of course, :D

Up in snowbound Newcastle, where we have had snow day and night for 7 days, my zed has coped amazingly in 12" of snow, no loss of traction, no scary moments, no tramlining in the ruts, due to an advanced driving technique called "leave it in the garage". Ever so glad I ditched my 3-series for an A6 quattro 2 months ago (smug mode) even so, with big fat stupid 19" summer tyres, 4wd isn't much better than 2fwd with skinny wheels IMHO, the little "underpowered" fwd cars seem to make it easier for the uninitiated. The main problem getting around is people either driving too fast, too close, or nervously waay too slow for the conditions. Better to stay at home, or travel at 3am when all the numpties are in bed...

Interestingly, (and I appreciate your thoughts on my theory) the zed was much better getting down and up my drive back in January than the 320D which was rubbish until I used winter tyres, and even then not much better than the Z4. -Is that because the diesel wheelspins much more easily (too much torque, too low rpm) compared with a (carefully driven) petrol, given both are RWD? (originally both on identical Bridgestone RE060's)

Take care out there boys and girls, we don't want to see anyone get hurt, or worse, a damaged Z4!
