So how do you get away quick ?

Interesting, Andy, as coming from my 300hp S3 8L, I've had to change my launch. It use to be ESP off (as soon as I got in the car, as the system on our old cars was horrendously intrusive), 3-4k and release clutch in a controlled manner, feeling the rears kick in and launch.

Now, I don't build the revs and instead aim for a smooth pull away with as much of a planted foot as I feel the conditions allow. I've only done a handful of fast get aways, always with the DSC on. I genuinely don't feel as much need to - more power, more noise, less need to launch  Same with Dad's R8 - I drive that more slowly than my Z4M, which I drive more slowly than my S3, which I drove more slowly than my old ClioSport!!

Crap I'm maturing... :(

I would drive my Dad's R8 more slowly than my car too, if he had one - that's just simple learned regard for one's own safety... Both in the car and out :D

I always drive my dad's car slowly as well, most likely as he is always sitting next to me - reminding me of what the speed limit is

Z4's aren't really meant for 0-60 runs, as their rear tyre geometry isn't set up for it. Negative camber means that the wheels aren't flat in a straight line, but are under cornering.

Regardless, my 3.0i with good tyres and in the dry will not spin once the tyres/tarmac have engaged fully and the weight is over the arse end. Not sure this is the case with the //M but the LSD should help.

I managed a 13.9 in my 3.0i at Santa Pod with a 2.05 60' which i thought was pretty good. I also beat a couple of //M's on the day (with poo drivers). I didn't think i was 'ragging' it necessarily either (i'm otherwise very mechanically sympathetic!!)

Its all about managing the initial 'jolt'. Basically to get off the line you really need to ease in the clutch with part throttle and go WOT only when you feel the weight has fully transferred from the initial bite (when the 3000rpm is met with its equivalent road speed, and no sooner) - this is the only way to exploit RWD to its fullest. If you don't give suspension enough time to allow the car to 'sit down' with the acceleration force, you will lose the advantage of the extra weight over the rear wheels.

I usually find that 3000 rpm is enough, which torque wise, probably translates to only 2200-2500 in an //M. Basically - don't try too hard, and definitely don't use sport mode initially :)

You will get the hang of it Andy...

Not a lot beats you when you get the RPM's and clutch bite right..

I remember your last demo Gaz... fire & brimstone,

Haha , wasn't that when the car was for sale so technically burning someone else's rubber :P
Must have been something on the road as well as the car did a mighty fine fishtail away up the road

No....It wasnt for sale then...... ha ha.....

Yea,the fishtail was caused buy 2nd gear spinning up the wheels and hitting the white centre lines..... Very slippy them!....

My reactions are getting slower as i get later into my forties..... I thought it was commendable i didnt throw it into the reservoir to be honest.

I find you have to either wring its neck or take it easy. There's not much middle ground.

It's difficult to get away quick without being seen to be trying. There's no subtlety
+1
This is spot on  :driving:

this is why i like my auto, foot flat to the floor and the car just goes without question :)
I always found my Z4M a little tricky to launch as traction on just holds it back too much and traction off lights the rears up a fair bit and if you go too quick from first to second you get a massive banging noise which I didn't like doing much.

Agree in my 330i with it being an auto even in manual mode in first it will just hook up without fuss and in drive because it sets off in second there isn't any drama either and its good for my wallet too regards tyres because in my M3(manual) with traction off I used to just love showing off leaving black lines and I do miss doing that a little though.

Sublimely put by Adam & kinda puts my mind at rest , , i wasn't looking to blast away from every set of lights i was just curious as to how others managed a swift launch .
I'l continue to feather it in & wait for my favourite 3rd gear to let rip with momentum & noise

Best way I think Andy  chuffed you are enjoying it :D also love how you still enjoy the odd traffic light Grand Prix too :driving:

Always seems to sound like it is doing 3k more than it actually is :driving:

I've not heard one from outside, but sitting in the driver's seat it always sounds like I'm trying too hard, even with mildly brisk effort vs my old 3.0si

I'm certainly going to master it before going for the performance exhaust or will look a complete clown through town :D all noise , smoke & no motion

Please don't, will make me feel better!

i let the clutch up smoothly and gently then metre out the gas pedal. the first 3 gears i can lay clean rubber to the ground, you can even see the gear change pause on the floor, lol!
