I don't think the M is hard to get off the line at all really. The secret is not too many revs and not too little. Too little and it bogs down, too many and you get lots of wheel spin and a smelly clutch. Keep it somewhere around 2-2.5k and it should take off like a scolded cat.
Oh and if you've not been higher than 5,000 then you are really missing out (on noise and an awful lot of horsepower too). No wonder that Audi TT felt quicker off the line!!
