Sat Nav Retrofit Fitting Details

Guys,
Those last few posts showing the tape template are a nice idea. i like the idea of tape that way the template doesn't move.
Over the past few days I have installed my nav system and it now seems to be working correctly. I don't have the DVD installed in its final position in the storage box yet. I needed to order the support bracket for the DVD player. That should get here in about a week.

But while I'm waiting for that I'll start putting back all th trim pieces i had to remove in the car and of course cut the hole in the dash.

The only part I never did figure out was how to remove that over engineered antenna connector on the back of the radio unit. I tried pushing in on parts and lifting up on what looked like a release tab. The tab broke off and the antenna cable then would slide off the radio. So i got it off but not correctly. Whats the big secret method in taking that silly off?

How did you guys know how close to the front edge of the dash to place your template?

My template only has the line to cut on not where to actually position the template.

Thanks to all you guys for the help and for posting all this info in the first place.

Feathers,

With regards to the disconnecting of the antenna wire, the tab that broke off is what you were suppose to squeeze to release the wire. With regards to the question as to how we knew how close to place the template to the front side of the dash, others will have to reply as I cut my dash without an official template. I mocked up a cardboard template, by tracing the outline of the display unit, and then cutting out what I thought the inner dimension should be from the center. I repeatedly tested the accurracy of the inner dimensions by placing the display unit into the cutout in the cardboard, marking the adjustments needed, and proceeded to make the necessary alterations. I then taped the cardboard to the dash, measured and aligned the template as to be centered on the HU opening. When I thought I had it all correct, I re-measured everything several more times before making my first cut. I opted to make the intial cut on the dashboard a little smaller than the inside of the cutout so that I could again remeasure every thing to make sure that both side-to-side, and front-to-back alignment was where I wanted it to be.

David,
Thanks for the reply.

I tried pushing on what looked like two different tabs on my antenna connector. One tab looked like it might flip out to unlock the connector. I can hearby state that is does NOT flip out. :-) This was the tab that was on the end of the connector. There was also a blue tab on the side of the connector.

However I figure out the positioning of the template I'll make the hole smaller than needed to start.

Thanks again.

Original template also has an adhesive on the back, so it also should do the trick, but the adhesive unfortunatelly doesn't stick to the dashboard as it should. That's why I opted out the idea with the masking tape.

I also had some doubt in the position of the cutout on the template - and the thing that puzzled me the most is exactly what is your question now. How far from the dash trim should I make an initial cut. I cut the hole a bit smaller and almost 5 mm closer to the trim (edge) - and then made it a bit wider on the last edge towards the windshield.

... you just need some time, a good light conditions and peace to do it :)

Have a nice day, Saso

hmmmm, I've never seen an orignal template.

... but you can order one from the dealer :) If you look in the contents of the Z4 navigation retrofit, one of the positions is - 01 29 0 301 834 Jig NAVIGATION E85. It costs less than 1€.

Have a nice day, Saso

Ok. I give in. I've now decided to keep the //M and need to have a project on the go to keep my interest going. Any idea where I can get the gear from to fit nav. I've not managed to find the main components on ebay. :(

Kev, look on international ebay. My monitor came from Germany, the radio from the US, the wireloom from BMW UK and the MKIV navi computer I bought from www.toysinyourcar.com (as I am VAT registered the cost of that was less then a VAT-less invoice from ebay).

The head unit is the hardest item to find I bought a dodgy one from PVR which had a MD, but then bought one off ebay from a forum member that was a MP3 CD one, so again sold the MD one to a forum member. But as PVR said international ebay is the key, my monitor came from greece.

The other radio for the second retrofit came from France, complete with CD (French) as well :D

Shut it sr ... :poke:
