Sat Nav Retrofit Fitting Details

Just a quick update. I now have all 3 main components. Waiting for the loom to arrive and some time to fit it. :D Again, thanks to PVR for helping me spend some money and pointing me in the right direction for the bits.

Hi I'm part way through putting in my sat nav and now utterly confused by the block on the back of the radio. I've read the posts on the site about where A7 AND A8 go pin 5 and 11, which is confirmed by the instructions but the diagram is poor and there are two lots on 5 and 11 pins that they could go in. The one I assued was correct has a small grey block in the main block. The second has big wires coming out of it in the main block. I have blue tooth and wasnt sure whether I should be seeing a wire already in the pin. And also the small grey block which has about 4 wires going into it but somewhere i read it shouldnt have any apart from the ones I am putting in. Please help

There are two small multi plugs on the back of the main stereo connector, the pins need to be connected to the one where you BT is connected. From memory it;s the one without the white cover. It will have wire connected already, but not in the pins you need.

Hi I think I guessed correct. I've put them in and it has at least turned on. However I've of course now got the problem I dont speak or read german German so cant for the life of me work out how to set the radio, nav, phone, clock etc up. Any one have a link to on line instructions. Cheers

 Ive read this post a couple of time, I too wish to do the retro fit, but I start sweating thinking of cutting the dash.... :( I will build up the courage one day Im sure, thanks for all the info.

Well I had a couple of hours to spare today, so fitted the nav. Well actually the unit and wiring. Tested it and it all works ok. Linda wanted to go out for lunch, so I'll have to cut the dash tomorrow night to finish the job.
It's a relatively simple job to fit. So anyone having doubts, don't. The one thing I will say, is BMW's plastics don't 'give' as much as they used to. Be careful. Very easy to snap off tabs etc.I ordered a couple of templates from BMW, so if anyone wants one FOC, then you are welcome to it. Just pm me.

You've done the easy but Kev, wait until you make that first cut tomorrow

Presume you are using a dremel, or are you going the PVR route with a penknife and 6 hours.

I'll use the Dremel. I haven't that much time to spare! Not too worried about cutting the dash. You either get it right or you don't. LOL. I'm sure I've done worse in the past. I remember hacking the dash many years ago on a Shogun for T' Rex's producer. Fitted what was then state of the art audio system. It took 2 days to fit. I was abit twitchy when I first switched it on. But it worked!

Well I fitted the screen tonight! Thanks to srhutch for his assistance with measurements. All went fine. If anyone needs to know what the distance is from the front of the dash, its just under 5mm.
I used the Dremel with a flexi drive on it. Made the job very easy. DON'T do what I did though. With flexi drives the Dremel is a couple of feet away from you running quite happily. DO NOT turn around with the Dremel running when you are near your windscreen. It makes a nice little skid mark on glass. :D
Good job I wanted a new screen anyway due to an annoying chip. Hey Ho!

At least it was the windscreen and not the dash. Did you cover the dash with anything in case the dremel slipped?

Good to hear it is all in ok. As mentioned in my pm, just got out of hospital after a burst appendix so missed it.

That's nasty, but if you need anybody to keep the ///M ticking over you know where I am

No. Should have left the job for 24hrs really. I'd had a crap busy day at work and was kn**kered. I just wanted to get it fitted whilst I had the chance really. Stupid boy....

If anyone has any of the below parts for sale, I need them for this mod: thanks

DVD MK4 Unit
Nav Screen 16:9 (black)
Stereo CID Unit

MK3 is CD based and is useless for the Z4. The MK2 is even older (think only in old 7 series and the likes).
