Sat Nav Retrofit Fitting Details

hey guys, though I've read all posts in this thread, I've still some questions -
I'd also like to retrofit a navigation pro system. Currently I have the navigation business system.
Hence I only need the head unit/CID, the monitor and the loom.
since the loom is not available any longer, I intend to take the x3 harness with modification.

- what's the part no of the x3 loom?
- any problems in taking current navigation dvd drive and upgrade to professional system?

thanks a lot,
nam

Hi nahodo

You need a MKIV drive for pro nav, I think you only have a MKIII with business nav.

basically you need the entire nav retrofit kit except the GPS antenna.

hey srhutch,
thanks for reply - I read that it's also working with mk3 - you need some reprogramming / coding but the hardware works out well.
but still needing part no of the harness. and do you need the radio code when buying a used head unit?

Thx, but what i meant is whether the radio code is needed due to anti theft purposes? And still dont know the x3 harness no. :D

hi all,

well, i ordered the following parts:
- CID / Flap monitor
- Headunit
- X3 harness
- cutting template for making whole for the montior

I already have a navigation business system, hence i have the mk3 in my car.

since i haven't obtained the coding kit to reprogramme my mk3 to the big display, will music and work anyhow?
is there any writing telling me how to modify the x3 harness to fit to my z4?

thx a lot,
nam

Finally got some time & peace to do it. Marked with the help of original cutting template with some diagonal references, just to check the position and symmetry. Since I got a feeling that the cutout on the template is a little too big, I opted out to make a slightly narrower cut - 6 mm according to my measurements. I was correct... I am not saying that the template supplied is oversized or not correct, I just felt comfortabler doing it this way.

... interior does look "complete" now, I think that the navigation really adds to the final image of the car.

Well, it was worth it. The last part - installation of the monitor - was quite a stresfull job with a lot of "what ifs". But I'm glad I did it 8)

Thanks for looking and for input when needed :D Have a nice evening, Saso

did you fit the grey display or is it a black one? i just bought one in grey and hopefully it looks like yours...

I had this same problem, in all the pics the black displays look grey, but when you get the display in person they are very much black. I was going to buy a used grey display off ebay and some members convinced me otherwise....bc i have black dashtop.....

I just received the cid today, it is in grey with black buttons- but i think it fits well to my interior - otherwise I'll respray it in black.
but still don't know to modify the x3 harness- need help!

One of the forum members (th30d0r3) customised an X3 loom, you could try sending him a PM.

Cheers
Dave

well, for pre-facelift it's ok since most of the other parts are silver/grey too.

@bug - thx for the hint, I sent him a message an looking forward to response.
I just retrofitted the display and waiting until the other parts arrive..

hey guys! just bought a full system off a member down to the wiring harness, as the retrofit wireing harness is no longer available will the harness off his oem system work with my car (plug and play) i basically change everything from the amp to the speaker wires

any insight will be most helpfull i think i have it figured out but want to hear from people with some insight in this matter before i start cutting thanks guys!!!!!

Does anyone know if there is a way to get the turning mechanism of the monitor working without having to mount the satnav computer, gps antenna etc? I'm considering to mount the monitor but with an aftermarket satnav or a tablet computer to replace the screen... It would be great if the monitor also goes up and down. Would I need the whole loom or is there another way?

And yet another question :D

Does anyone have the dimensions (incl depth in the dash) of the standard satnav flip up/down monitor? Are the dimensions of this monitor the same as the dimensions of the X3-monitor? I have read on a few posts here that the parts look alike and that some have even received X3 parts in error when installing the standard satnav. So if the dimensions are the same... the X3 dash bin should fit the E85... hence the portable BMW Garmin system should fit the E85...?

The X3 monitor is slightly different and I would avoid as it looks wrong and the viewing angles are also slightly different.

If you know electronics then yes you could get the motor to operate using the switches on the side independently of the vehicle.
