Part number here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT53&mospid=47799&btnr=65_1335&hg=65&fg=95

The pic is a bit misleading though as the GPS antenna rund from the Nav Unit in centre console between the seats. It also dont tell you the part number for the plug I mentioned, but as you have blueooth you dont need it, it's the black plus that goes into the multi plug on the back of the head unit.

Right - thought you were referring to the factory loom which has all the connectors you need ...

PVR and Srhutch,

I appreciate all your assistance. The realoem just shows the GPS cable, not either of the harnesses that connect to the backside of the NAV DVD unit, correct? The unit I had the wiring loom depicted in the PDF (labeled as "A"). The wiring connections "A7" and "A8" are the ones that run to the backside of the radio which you've said is the NAV voice wires. "A5" and "A4" are the ones that connect to the backside of the NAV DVD unit, one contains the connection to the two wires (A7 & A8) from the radio, and the other is for the NAV display.

I have serious doubts that the wiring loom I was provided is specifically from a Z4, as there were a number of additional connectors that had no place to connect to on the dashboard side. Do you know what pins on the NAV DVD are for power? I'd like to run a test wire to them and see if I can get the NAV DVD operating.

Thanks,
David

The loom you need is about six foot long, it has two big plugs in the middle that plug into the existing loom behind the passanger seat, then the cables at that end connect into the back of the Nav Computer/DVD drive, the other four foot is fed along the transmission tunnel upto the monitor which again has another big plug on it. There are also two wire near the monitor plug which plug into the back of the headunit. The GPS antenna plugs directly into the Nav Computer.

Have you got a link to the ebay listing so we can see what you got?

It was ebay item number 120513800720. The photos don't really the wiring loom. The wiring loom I have is approximately 6 feet in length and . When you say "behind the passenger seat", I assume you are refering to inside the storage compartment, on the passenger side.

Sorry for the bad link I posted earlier, here's the link with the retrofit instructions I used http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/joel/original/Z4_NAV_Retrofit.pdf

Thanks,
David

David if you loom has the same connectors as per the PDF you are using then all should be good.

all you should need to do is remove the multiplug from the headunit and then remove the black smaller plug from the multiplug, remove the cover and insert the two pins from the nav loom in the correct holes.

The wiring from my multiplug that went into the headunit did not originally contain the black smaller plug. The kit I bought included the small black plug, for which I inserted the two wires into pins 5 and 11. Those are the only wires in the small black plug, so I think I'm still missing a wire(s) that are for the source of power. The ebay seller has responded and provided me a some instructions that were originally posted on an Italian Z4 website (apparently not online right now), that has a lot of photos. I'm going to proceed with taking my system apart and see if I can find an existing harness that may already be in place.

Thanks for all your assistance. I'll get back with the final outcome of my install.

Regards,
David

If you already have bluetooth then you will already have the black plug. You need to add these two wires into your existing black plug, if you replace with the new one your bluetooth will not function correctly.

David just a thought, but you keep mentioning a source of power, all this come from the loom, if it's not working I would look at your earthing point from the new loom, if this is bot connected to a good earth nothing will work, from memory I found an existing terminal with an earth and just added this one. Attaching to the body on a painted part will not be an good as it will not be bare metal.

srhutch,

I'll double-check my ground wiring to ensure it is good. The reason I keep mentioning a source for power is that the wiring loom I was provide only hooks into the backside of the NAV DVD unit, Nav Display, and to the two pins on the backside of the radio head unit (pins 5 & 11). I've taken some photos of the wiring harness (both what is in the car, and the wiring harness I was provided), but I can't figure out how to post the pictures. Other than the two wires that I hooked into pins 5 & 11 on the black harness on the backside of the radio, and the connector for the NAV display, there is no other wires that are part of the car's wiring, that hook up to the NAV DVD unit. Since you've indicated that the two wires I hooked up on the backside of the radio were for the Nav voice, not power, there is no other sources for powering the DVD.

David

Did you not connect the main part behind the left side chair? That is where it connects to the main bus and where it gets the power from. It piggy backs on the existing connector there.

PVR,

No I didn't because I only have a two 18 pin connectors (red & blue) that are for the backside of the NAV DVD unit, and a ground wire on that end of the wiring harness. As I said earlier, I suspect that I've got the wrong wiring harness. I'm currently exchanging emails with the guy I purchased the NAV system from, and he seems to be very willing to try and sort this out. Thanks for yours and srhutch's assistance in helping me with this issue.

Regards,
David

At least we have identified that now, might be worth getting the seller to issue a refund and pick the loom up at a local dealer, you will save time and the seller money in carriage costs.

FYI, seller is rectifying the issue. He recognized that he had sent the wiring harness for an X3 by mistake. .

Thanks,
David

Is your car in bits at the moment or do you have to dismantle it all to put the new cable in ...

PVR,

I've removed everything except the center console to take the wiring harness out. I'll be doing that once I return home at the end of the week, and hopefully by the my correct wiring loom will be waiting for me.

David
