Don't know if this is the right topic etc (I'm a 'newbie') but I thought this may be of interest to any Owners who require an Integrated Sat Nav solution on a budget. Friend & I have discussed this idea for ages, here's what we did; Bought a spare dash-mount for
Garmin 660FM for about £8- fixed it into the ash-tray with sealant.
The 12V supply lead was butchered, and TMC antennae fed through a hole made in the tray-bottom and into the centre console. The 12V lead was attached to the
Hood-Up supply rather than the cigarette lighter i.e. so the power is cut when the key is out (the cig' lighter is a constant live-feed so no good for this purpose). The TMC antennae was fixed internally, around the Uppermost part of the centre-console. That's it.
Now, when You start the engine- the Nav comes to life (no button switching needed) and of course when Engine-off it Powers down!
The Audio can be routed 1 of 2 ways, if You prefer not use the internal speakers, via built in FM Transmitter or via the headphone socket with a 3.5mm stereo lead. Although I have the Aux input as standard on my Z4, and it's only just below the underside of the Temperature dial, I prefer the cordless tidy-look.
This now gives me Nav, TMC, MP3 Player, Bluetooth Phone all routed through the Car Audio system (all permanently powered) Just like my 525i!
All done for £200 & a few beers!
Further Good points, the touch screen is in comfortable safe reach (in front of gear stick), it's removable, no unsightly cables, the position provides better anti- glare than dash or windscreen mount.
Curiously, we just found out this weekend, a very similar option is now available on the New Z4 (Wonder how many ££s...?)
Needles to say, these procedures should only be performed by competent technicians etc. Anyone considering this, must observe the Legal & safe use of such devices, particularly when used in this non-standard arrangement.
