Rpi scoop and afe intake..

ive done it....test driven....sounds ace 8)

nice lil bark when u raise the revs above 3500....
sounds oem when ur not pushing :thumbsup:

tbh though im not too happy with the finish on the top plate of the intake....i did my best with the respray but it doesnt look how i want it...

so im thinking now ive got it fitted i need to look into different finishes for it....maybe get it stripped back and refinished properly...was in too much of a rush to get it fitted to wait around though...

If you remove the AFE to refinish it, please will you measure the internal diameter of the pipe which contains the MAF? Thanks. :thumbsup:

well when uve finished complying all your data i hope ur gonna sell ur findings to us lot with some improvements...

overall im def happy with the afe...ok it doesnt look amazing (hopefully with a refinish it will) but it does howl like a banshee when ur going for it.....

god i want a csl...

My interest in air-intakes lies entirely with trying to squeeze as much power from a NA engine as I can get, but from this forum, I get the impression that most people want more noise. Is this right? Do you want a CSL primarily for the noise or the increase in power?

I'm at a crossroads with my development of an air-intake: I've found the increase in power, but if it's noise that people value the most, then I'll work on developing that aspect some more.

well in an ideal world id want both...but i cant afford 3-4k for a csl intake and tune..
i would say i would personally prefer noise over power as noise is more measurable...for me anyway as i dont do lap times etc..
lets imagine you make an extra 10bhp from your uprades and research....i will possibly notice that less than a howl of a gruppe m or afe which has the possibility of losing a bhp or two...
if you can get more power out of the intake while making it sound better then excellent work!
i think its good to have a vareity of options...cheap afe which provides noise,more expensive gruppe m which provides noise and "maybe" and extra hp, your mod which provides perhaps noticeable power, and the much more expensive csl which provides noticeable power and sound....oh and the much more expensive S/c which is just...pooweeerr

id love to read your reseach, i know i probably wouldnt understand much of it as in avionics we dont tend to learn about aerodynamincs and i know you want to copyright stuff when u land something big, but would make interesting reading

What I'm developing will cost less than a CSL intake and will not require a remap.

You might like to see where I'm up to with performance improvements from the mods that I've done to my Z4MC, as shown in the graph below.

I've compared the performance in 3 different states: 1. OEM intake and OEM silencers; 2. modified air intake and modified silencers and 3. "Ramcharger" and OEM silencers. These figures are "standardised" because, when recorded, they take into account the variables of ambient temperature, pressure and humidity, and all recordings are from on the same private road.

As you can see, I've been able to increase the torque output by around 8.5% above OEM, which in turn, increases horsepower. My latest mod, the "Ramcharger", not only increases the torque, but it also maintains the increased torque to high rpm, which has a considerable impact on bhp. I've previously made a "Ramcharger" for my Z3MC with the same S54 engine, and the results that I've obtained with both my Z3MC and Z4MC are very similar, except that the redline on the Z4MC is higher than for the Z3MC, so the Z4M is able to produce higher bhp. The dip and peak at around 7500rpm in the graph for the "Ramcharger" occurs because I had to lift off as I crested a small rise during the run, but shows that peak torque can occur at high rpm due to the effectiveness of the intake.

if/when I make this development available, then I have loads of data that would be made available to support the product. What do you think gains of the order shown in my graph, combined with an improved induction sound, would be worth?
 
im on a netbook so the graph is a bittt small.....
how much of an increase of bhp/tq is there....
it looks about 10bhp but as i say i cant read the axis
 
The "at the wheels" figures are Torque = 246lbs/ft and Power = 370bhp. You can add your own percentage to get "at the flywheel" figures as given on static dynos. I know some people will claim I'm a fantasist with these figures, but my DashDyno recordings give very similar figures to the dynos of Evolve and Powerstation. I repeat: the high bhp figure is due to maintaining the torque throughout the rev range to the limit.

Below is a dyno plot of my Z3MC with modified air-intake and gutted silencers on the Powerstation dyno for comparison. With my "Ramcharger" mod it does even better.

According to the information given to my datalogger by my Z4MC's ECU, it's around 8.5% peak torque and considerably more bhp.

So, what do you think such a mod is worth? The reason I ask is because I can develop this in a few different ways and I'd like to make it affordable, but at the same time, make it as aesthetic and desirable as possible. You wouldn't believe some of the old junk that I've used in my experiments in developing this idea - Blue Peter meets Scrapheap Challenge. :rofl: :driving:
 
hmmm what its worth and what "me myself and i" would pay are different things...

the s/c kit is worth 7k but i personlly wouldnt pay that cos i couldnt afford, the afe is to some ppl worth 500 quid as they paid for it brand new, but to me it isnt hence why i went second hand...

but...

if your mods give around 10%more power, an increase in sound (a nice one), and looks good...
then surely if its around 800 ish quid ud have a lot of interest....without knowing ur secrets is tht possible? im sure the csl intake route is costly cos its carbon fibre and needs a tune...looks bloody nice though
 
what is it about the csl intke tht makes it sound so much different to oem? natural harmonics of c/f? bellows? differnt airflow/filter?
