Roof Drainage Holes

Had the car one day :(

Water leaking from the front edge part of the sunroof and running / leaking on top of the drivers sun visor and dropping onto the drivers seat

where are the drainage holes guys, or am I better replacing all the roof seals?

Kind Regards

Nick

If it’s from a dealer, best to notify them asap, and not attempt any DIY. Allow them to diagnose and repair.

If it’s a BMW dealership, they should be able to get this fixed for you.

If it’s a regular dealer, ask them about taking it to BMW for them to fix and ask if they will foot the bill.

If you do anything yourself, the dealer can just as easily argue that you caused the issue.

Best of luck!

Thats a bummer :(

I would be right pee'd off is that happened, i collected car from 240 miles. To get home and find a leak
like that i would be fuming :headbang:

That's a real bummer Nick.

Especially as you love the car otherwise. I think yours is a 30i and there don't seem to be many of those around , so hopefully the seller will get it fixed for you.

Hi Mr Tidy

Yeah, Im gutted, if Im honest Im not sure I would want the dealer to fix it for me, yes ok if it was a BMW main dealer, but not some independant who's only got one eye on the profit, theres no knowing how long this water leak has been there for, and what damage has been caused elsewhere. Sad love the model colour and version…..

Sprayed the top edge of the screen, and along the seal with the karcher
The seals were never intended to resist that sort of pressure Nick, just use a hosepipe.
I went to a hand car wash in my first Z, as part of the pre wash process they used a power washer and as they did the back screen it folded over the back lower roof shell seal and I got a free neck wash!

Hi Mark

Thanks for the info, yes I actually thought that as well, and others have said similar, i was probably a bit to heavy handed maybe, but I have a BMW body shop near by, so I will have a chat with these guys try and collate some more information, so as to make an informed decision considering that information, before ultimately rejecting the car

There is one thing I personally hate, and that is giving up, and being unfair to what is a beautiful car, but I have only 30 days to reject and get a refund.

Nick, sorry to hear of the issue... takes the shine off it all. Probably the seals have never been Gummi pfleged! (rubber seal protectant and conditioner).

I certainly does take the shine off the new car when something like this happens. I hope you get the situation resolved

As others have said, don’t expect the seals to resist a direct pressure washer blast!

It’s understandably annoying but it’s only a rubber seal that’s causing the leak, let them fix it & carry on enjoying the car.
Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Would you not be concerned about future corrosion in electric terminals in the centre console Rob? I agree on the seal being replaced being an easy enough job but the possible electrical issues further down the line would be my concern if thats been happening sat on a forecourt all through winter

these cars will leak, especially if the seals are not looked after.
should be part of your routine maintenance to wipe the seals down and lube them.
I do mine regularly, especially before winter comes .

He said "Lube".

Looob.

Strangely enough, i cannot find a replacement part for the front roof seal.

https://www.lllparts.co.uk/en/catalogs/bmw/ECE/E89/Z4+23i/R%7CN%7C2010%7C%7Csearch

Is the roof sitting in properly? i.e. flush on both sides?
Is the rubber seal soft & flexible or hard & rubbery?

Hi guys, yeah it does take the shine off I must admit……but it hasn't turned me off the car

That said, this is quite interesting, I have just replaced the salmon pink Relays in the boot, and now the front roof edge has located correctly and is sitting into the rubber seal as it should, also the glass came up which didn't happen when I raised and lowered the roof previously……..mmmmm sounds promising.

The cars booked in with Sytner BMW on Thursday, for a complete health check, I have also requested the drainage holes to be cleaned out to.

I want to say to all of you……what a great bunch of friends you all are for helping me in this way, it means a lot to me seriously.

I cant thank you all enough

Hold on a sec Nick.
What do you mean by this?

Hi Wanderer

I replaced the roof relays today, and now the front edge of the roof is sitting what appears to be correctly sunken into the
Rubber windscreen seal., and raised the glass when the roof came up this didn't happen yesterday, so just quite possibly, it may be what you said wanderer the roof wasn’t sitting correctly.

By Disconnecting the battery in itself will have re set the modules, whats termed in the trade as a hard battery re set, the down side is that any error P Codes historical and current may now be potentially lost, that said any current problems will generate fresh P Codes when driving.

We will see when it rains
